Notes from Jack Harvey Thompson - great grandson of John Botwright:
As your records show, John Botwright was indeed a fisherman and died on 22nd July 1890. He drowned when his fishing boat sank in a gale at the mouth of the River Tyne (Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland). I have the coroner's report which reveals that his body was identified by my great grandmother Maria Ward. She says that he was 38 which would give a date of birth 1852.
Your records show that the fisherman John Botwright who married Maria Ward was born in 1855 Belton Suffolk and was the son of Emanuel Botwright b. 1829 Lound Suffolk. My research suggests that this is very likely but I can't prove it. Maria Ward does not appear to have married John Botwright. But she did live with John Botwright between 1884 and his death in 1890. She did marry a William Thompson and in the coroner's report she identifies herself as the wife of William Thompson. Presumably her husband William Thompson had died or they had separated. However, because there is no marriage certificate between Maria Ward (Thompson) and John Botwright I have been unable to determine his date of birth. His death certificate states that he was 38 but this is based upon the evidence that Maria gave at the inquest. Maria was illiterate and probably did not know his exact age. Therefore it is still possible that my great grandfather is the John Botwright your records show as the fisherman b. 1855 Belton and son of Emanuel Botwright.
John Botwright and Maria Ward also had a son, Frederick Botwright who was born 14th August 1886 at Bell Street North Shields. (I have a copy of his birth certificate). I also have his marriage certificate showing that he married Alice Dempster Jeffery on May 8th 1912 in Holy Trinity Church Tynemouth. They had a daughter Freda Botwright, b. 1917.
There are many variations of the spelling Botwright in the various documents. On my great grandfather's death certificate it is Botwright.

Four years after my great grandfather John Botwright drowned in 1890, Maria Ward (or more correctly Maria Thompson as she was still called) married a fisherman named John Robertson in 1894. Maria is on the 1901 Census. A Maria Robertson, born abt 1858 died in Tynemouth in 1901 (after the Census) and this was my Great Grandmother Maria Ward.
