Ex-Ypsilanti mayor Boatwright dies
In office from 1970-72, 80-year-old was killed in a car crash Sunday, December 14, 2008
BY JOHN MULCAHYThe Ann Arbor News

Richard Lee Boatwright was a two-term mayor of Ypsilanti, an elementary school principal in Dearborn Heights and the person who ran an Army radio station on Attu island in the Aleutian chain during World War II.

But what his daughter, Jane Cook, remembers most about Boatwright was her father playing their baby grand piano and singing to his family.

"He had a beautiful tenor voice,'' said Cook, of Manchester.

Boatwright, 80, also of Manchester, died Dec. 6 as the result of an automobile crash on M-52 north of the village. The Dodge Caravan he was driving went off the road in snowy conditions and struck a tree, State Police said.

Boatwright was elected to the Ypsilanti City Council in 1969 and served as mayor from 1970-72 at a time when the council elected the mayor. On the council, he often was outspoken and a conservative on budget matters, Cook said.

"He was very direct and to the point,'' she said.

He also helped establish the former JYRO Park on Ford Lake, Cook said.

Born in Ypsilanti in 1928, Boatwright became a foster child at age 8 when his parents separated, Cook said. He was raised by Catherine Sieber, her three daughters and one son, who were neighbors, Cook said. Sieber paid for an operation to cure her father's mastoid infection and probably saved his life, Cook said.

Boatwright earned a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in education from Normal State College, now Eastern Michigan University, and was a classroom teacher before becoming an administrator. He retired in 1991, Cook said.

He married Margaret Boutell in 1950 and the couple had four children. His wife and one daughter preceded him in death.

He moved to Manchester soon after he left the Ypsilanti City Council in 1972, Cook said.
