NASA worker and others etched their monikers on the flagstaff

Gordon E. Boatright, who helped build components for the Gemini and Apollo space programs as a NASA employee and who served on two ships in the Pacific in World War II, has died from cancer in an Abilene hospital. He was 87.
Boatright helped fabricate items for astronauts, including the standard used to plant the American flag on the first lunar mission, family members said.
"His name is actually on the moon. He and a bunch of other guys chemically etched their names on the flagstaff that was taken up there and poked into the ground," his son, Rolan Boatright, said. He was born in San Angelo on April 13, 1921, to Ernest and Birtie Payne Boatright. Rolan Boatright said his father quit high school and joined the U.S. Navy. Boatright served on the USS Chicago, a heavy cruiser in several battles and campaigns during the early months of the war in the Pacific, his son said.
Boatright was then assigned to the destroyer USS Mullany, said his son-in-law, Sam Rapp. The Mullany was severely damaged on April 6, 1945, off the coast of Okinawa when a strafing Japanese aircraft crashed into the vessel. The impact caused horrible damage, killed 21 sailors and forced the remaining crew to abandon ship.
Boatright was rescued by another ship and eventually reboarded the Mullany, and the crew saved the destroyer from sinking, said Rapp.
After the war, Boatright married Nancy Berger, and the couple eventually settled in southeast Houston.
Boatright worked several jobs before joining NASA in the mid-1960s. He also worked on the handheld propulsion unit used by astronauts in early spacewalks, his son said. "And he helped build various components on the lunar rover," he said. He retired from NASA in 1986.
Boatright, who died June 9, was preceded in death by his first wife.
He is survived by his second wife, Flo Boatright; daughter Joy McKelroy and her husband, Girard; daughter Marsha Rapp and her husband, Sam; son Rolan Boatright and his wife, Linda; stepson Garay Holland and his wife, Pat; stepson Jerald Holland and his wife, Joan; and sister Ernestine Scott. Survivors also include six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the South Park Funeral Home, 1310 N. Main in Pearland.
GORDON E. BOATRIGHT, 87, died Monday, June 9, 2008, in an Abilene Hospital . Gordon was
born April 13, 1921, in San Angelo to Ernest and Birtie Payne Boatright. He was a veteran of
World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. A Chief Petty Officer, he fought in
several sea battles and was aboard two ships that were sunk in combat. He and his family were
Houston residents for 40 years and former members of the Southeast Church of Christ. He was a
machinist for NASA for 21 years and made many components used on the Gemini and Apollo
space vehicles. He retired in 1986. After the death of his wife Nancy, he later married Florence
Holland Boatright of Tuscola, Texas where they resided until his death. He was an active member
of the South Taylor County Lions Club. Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife,
Nancy Burger Boatright; and three brothers, Calvin Boatright, Lyndal Boatright and Kyle Boatright.
Survivors include his wife, Flo Boatright of Tuscola; daughters, Joy McKelroy and husband Girard of Sugar Land; Marsha Rapp and husband Sam of Houston; son, Rolan Boatright and wife Linda of Houston; two stepsons, Garay Holland and wife Pat of Bee Branch, Ak., Jerald Holland and wife Joan of Fernandina Beach, FL.; one sister, Ernestine Scott of San Angelo; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 28 at 1:30PM, at the South Park Funeral Home, 1310 N. Main Street , Pearland , Texas . No formal visitation is planned.

Elsie Boatright Downs, 82, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at her home in San Antonio, Texas.
She was born in Nixon to Emmett and Altha Elizabeth Pullin Boatright on Feb. 11, 1925.
Elsie married Quentin "Bud" Downs on Dec. 31, 1944, in Gonzales. He preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 2005.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Bessie Elledge; and a brother, Collie Boatright.
Elsie is survived by her son, Darrell Downs and wife Lois, and her daughter, Elizabeth Frank and husband Kenneth, all of San Antonio; a sister, Merle Mahan of Dermott, Ark.; a brother, Wilburn Boatright of Victoria; three grandchildren, Darren Downs of Fredericksburg; and John Downs and Lisa Frank, both of San Antonio; and two great-grandchildren, Garrett and Zachary Downs of Fredericksburg. Also surviving her are numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Viewing and visitation took place in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon on Monday, April 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A graveside service followed at 2 p.m. in the Nixon Cemetery.

Services for Thomas E. Boatwright, 84, of Ada, are 1:00 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Revs. David Daniel and Bob Langston will officiate. A Committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Criswell Funeral Home.
Mr. Boatwright died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at a local hospital. He was born February 3, 1928 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Jim and Georgie Batt Boatwright. He graduated from Ada High School in May, 1946. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from East Central University July 1950.
Mr. Boatwright served in the U. S. Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan.
He married Merle Upchurch on December 21, 1950.
In 1953 he started his career at the First National Bank where he was a Vice-President and Auditor. In 1980 he worked for the Chickasaw Housing Authority in their Financial Department. From 1984-1991 he served as the President of Pontotoc County Bank in Roff. From 1991-2000 he concluded his banking career at the First National Bank of Ada as a Vice-President.
Mr. Boatwright was active in the First United Methodist Church where he served as past chairman of the Administrative Board and was a member of and chairman of various committees. He was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was also past member of the Men's Club, member of the First United Methodist Church Foundation, Charter member of Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada, and past president and former member of the Ada Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Pontotoc County Cattlemen's Association.
Survivors include his wife, Merle U. Boatwright, of the home; his son, Thomas Dale Boatwright and his wife Marcia of Ada; his granddaughter, Mindy Ahrend and her husband T. S. of Temple, TX; his grandson, Brent Thomas Boatwright and his wife Amy of Ada; and great grandchildren, Bo and Baylee Boatwright and Marlea and Stella Ahrend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Georgie Boatwright; and one brother, Jimmy Boatwright. Bearers will be Carlton Tilley, Wayne King, Dr. Bill Chapman, Jim Hamby, Roy Hanson, Duard Thomas, Denny O'Dell, Zane Bowman, and Ken Johnson. Honorary bearers will be the Fellowship Sunday School Class Members of the First United Methodist Church.
The family says those who wish may make memorials to the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Sunday School Class, P. O. Box 566, Ada, OK 74821.
