Boat(w)right Family Genealogy in America

Generation 7

7-105. MARTHA GILL BOATWRIGHT (BENJAMIN BENONI7, JAMES6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 02 Mar 1798 in Powhatan County, Virginia, and died 25 Nov 1881 in Paint Lick, Garrard County, Kentucky. She married JAMES KELLY 04 Sep 1818 in Powhatan County, Virginia. He was born Abt. 1795 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1850 in Madison County, Kentucky.

Notes for MARTHA GILL BOATWRIGHT:

Family records show the date of Martha's marriage as being 04 Sep 1818, and that she married G. Kelly. It is likely that the county marriage record indicates date marriage license was issued (17 Aug 1818) rather than actual date of marriage. I have been unable to find any further record of her or her descendants. - Source: Robert Guy Boatright

Date of marriage taken from Elizabeth Blackburn Boatwright's family Bible.- Source David Rains

1850 Fed. Census for Madison Co., KY (p. 225) shows Martha, age 51, living in household of Elizabeth Boatright.

Notes and facts from R.G. Boatright:

Several claims of Cherokee Heritage have been filed based on statements that James' Mother, Elizabeth was 1/2 Cherokee.

In 1824, James appears in Madison County, Kentucky, where he and his wife Mary P. executed a deed to his widowed mother, Elizabeth Boatwright, of Madison County, Kentucky, for 1/8th part of certain lands being that land on which his deceased father, Benjamin Boatwright, lived at the time of his death; said land consisting of 190-3/4 acres, and described as lying on both sides of the main Buckingham Road. This deed was made and signed in Madison County, Kentucky, on September 10, 1824 (see: Virginia deed Book #9, p. 62). We next find that he and his wife and four children are listed in the 1830 Census of Graves County, KY. His children were listed as 10 years of age and under. His brother, William Van is also listed in the same Census.

In June, 1928, William L. Boatright, then Attorney General for the State of Colorado, and from whom I obtained much of the early family history, stated in a letter to me that his grandfather, William Van Boatwright, with his family left Kentucky and came to Platte County, Missouri, about 1851-1852, where he had a sister, Rhoda Ann living there with her husband James Foley. Also, another sister, Lucy, who had married Isaac Cox, was living in Nodaway County, Missouri. With this information, we might assume that James Blackburn Boatwright may also have come West and settled in Missouri about the same time. I have been unable to find any other trace of him.

Marvin W. Boatright of St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1953, states that his great-grandfather was named "Jimmy" and he was born in 1827 in Montgomery County, Missouri, but he knew nothing of any earlier ancestor.

In the 1860 Census of Gentry County, Missouri, we find listed a James Boatright, age 31, with his wife, Anna and children Daniel and Senatovia. Also we find William, with his wife, Sallie and other members of his family. The 31-year-old "James" could well have been "Jimmy" referred to by Marvin Boatright.

There are quite a number of Boatwright families living in and around St. Joseph, and Kansas City, Missouri. However, those whom I have contacted were unable to furnish me with sufficient information to establish their early ancestors.

James Blackburn Boatwright did not migrate to Kentucky with mother, Elizabeth. (A paper by James P. Todd of Paint Lick, KY, says James Blackburn Boatright migrated to Kentucky with his widowed mother.) In either case, it appears that James Blackburn moved around quite a bit.

Date of death approximated from Dawes Commission affidavit filed by husband of Jame's granddaughter. See "Notes" for son, Jasper. Denny Boatright, Springfield, MO, gives date of death about 1875 in Doniphan Co., KS.

She was born 29 Jun 1806 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and died 13 Sep 1885 in Darlington, Gentry County, Missouri.

Notes for WILLIAM VAN RENSELEAR BOATWRIGHT:

William Van Renselear Boatright Gravestone

Middle name was originally "Von Rennselear" (various spellings have been found)

See link for copy of William Van Renselear Boatright Bible pages.

From "Boat(w)right's of Virginia", R. G. Boatright, 1967:

William Van moved with his mother and younger brothers and sisters from Virgina to Madison County, Kentucky in 1821. He married and went to Graves County, Kentucky where we find him and his family listed in the 1830 Census. (Also, see 1850 Census, Graves County, p. 434) Their first 3 children were born in Madison County and all the others were born in Graves County, Kentucky. In 1851, William Van and his family moved from Graves County, Kentucky to Platte County, Missouri, where he lived a year or so before moving to a farm near Darlington in Gentry County. He lived there until his death. His home in Gentry County was the first meeting house of the Primitive Baptist Congregation.

Based on the spelling of Boatright in the William V. Boatright bible, William's children dropped the letter "w" from their surname. The Bible entries were recorded in 1855 by Susan F. Boatright, daughter of William and Sallie Boatwright.

From Mrs. R. C. (Lorene) Wallace of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, a great-granddaughter of Jacob Gates Boatright we learn that William Van Boatright's correct middle name was "Van Renselaer". No doubt in transcribing the name "Van", it has often been written "Von". Mrs. Wallace also notes that Fannie Sloan, a daughter of Mary Ann Elizabeth says that her mother's name was Mary Ann 'Eliza', not Mary Ann Elizabeth.

Floy B. Chancey in "Old William Boatright and His descendants", 1995, quotes from biography of William T. Boatright (Son of William Van):

" ...the family (William Van, wife and children) moved to Missouri and with them on this trip was a colored woman who had been a slave for the Boatright family, and had helped to raise William. Her name was Mariah, but she was called Aunt "Rier" by everyone. Aunt Rier went with them not as a slave but as a trusted member of the household. During the Civil War she kept William's money and hid it in a secret hiding place. He did not know where the money was, but when he needed any, he went to her for it. That way, they could tell the marauders that he did not keep any money. William built a small house in his back yard for Aunt Rier and she lived and died there. She is buried in the Boatwright Cemetery in Darlington, Missouri."

Source: Biography of William Taylor Boatright published in 1891 from "Portrait And Biograph Album" containing the biographies of larger number of pioneer settlers in Sumner County, Kansas, copyright by Chapman Bros. in 1885 and published in 1991.

Occupation: Farmer and miller. In October 1828, William and Sallie Boatwright moved from Garrand County Kentucky to Graves County, Kentucky. Children listed in 1820 census record. William and family left KY in 1851 and settled in Platte County, Missouri. Eighteen months later moved to Gentry County, Missouri.

Four of William and Sallie's sons fought in the Civil War; Jacob Gates and William Taylor on the Union side and Francis Alexander and Joseph Marion on the Confederate side. Joseph was killed at Perryville, Kentucky.

Notes for BENJAMIN DANIEL BOATRIGHT:

The Benjamin Daniel Boatright Homestead The Boatright homestead is located in Madison County, Kentucky, about 2-3 miles northeast of Paint Lick on the Paint Lick-Berea highway. According to "Madison County Rediscovered: Selected Historical Architecture", the home served as a temporary headquarters for Confederate general, John Hunt Morgan, during the War Between the States. Most of the information concerning Benjamine Daniel Boatwright and his direct descendants is taken from "The Family and Ancestors of Robert Guy Boatright" by Robert Guy Boatright.

The manuscript was edited and updated by Dennis Guy Boatright.

Benjamine Daniel was a farmer and owned several slaves. He was a Master Mason and secretary of Masonic Lodge# 183, Kirksville, Madison County, Kentucky, from 1849 to 1878.

He lived and worked on his farm.

He married a second time to a spinster, Eliza Johnson. They had no children and are believed to have moved late in life to Danville, Kentucky. They were married on March 31, 1885. This date is recorded by Kathy Vockery in her book, "Garrard County, Kentucky Marriages, 1797 - 1890".

It is not known for sure when or where he died, but Ricker, in his notes on the Boat(w)right Family of the Southeastern United States gives the date of death as 1889 in Paint Lick, Kentucky.

From notes by Robert Guy Boatright:
Benjamin Daniel married a second time to Miss Eliza Johnson, a spinster. They had no children. Eliza was a sister of Sedonia Johnson who married Salem Wylie. They had a number of slaves.

Benjamin Daniel, a Master Mason was Secretary of Masonic Lodge No. 183 of Kirksville, KY from 1848 to 1878. He was born about 6 months after his father's death. In 1821 his mother moved her family to Madison County, KY from Powhatan County, VA. They settled near Kirksville, Madison County, KY.

"My father, John Waller, has said that his father, Benjamin Daniel often told him that he (Benjamin Daniel) was the last child of a family of 10 children and he knew very little about the other members of the family."

The "Boatwright" homestead is situated 2-3 miles SE of Paint Lick on the Paint Lick/Berea Highway. (for a picture, see: "Madison County Rediscovered: Selected Historic Architecture", Lavinia Kubiak, Kentucky Heritage Council and Madison County Historical Society...dgb)

Letter from Kathy Vockery, Garrard Co. Historical Soc.: Daniel must have died after 1889 since there are deeds recorded in his and Eliza's name in both Garrard and Madison Co. in 1890's.

In subsequent correspondence, Ms. Vockery provided copy of some pages from "History of Masonry in Madison County, KY, 1812 - 1913", Burnam, R. R., 1914, p. 14. In this material, Benjamin Daniel is listed as Secretary of Lodge #183 on its formation in 1848.

Notes for JALIA ANN PATTERSON:

Patterson Cemetery, Paint Lick, Garrard County, Kentucky

Photo of Patterson Cemetery, Paint Lick, Garrard County, Kentucky. Jalia and her parents, John Patterson and Rhoda Blackburn Patterson are buried here.

Jalia's mother was Rhoda Ann Blackburn Patterson, the sister of Benjamine Daniel's mother, Elizabeth Blackburn.

There has been some dispute among researchers over the spelling of Jalia's first name with many assuming that her name should have been "Julia", but Dennis Guy Boatright is in possession of a photograph of her tombstone and the name is clearly spelled "Jalia".
