Notes for ROBERT M. BOATRIGHT:
An Old Pistol
By Walt Larson
The following story is related in an issue of the “Confederate Veteran” magazine. The story is told by a Missouri ex-Confederate soldier.
"I was with Gen. Dick Taylor, not far from the Mississippi River. News had reached him that a "cotton thief" was at a certain place buying cotton and shipping it North. I was ordered to go and capture and bring him in.
I went alone, and as I was approaching the house where he was reported to be staying, I saw him going from it as fast as his horse could carry him. I gave chase and finally overtook and captured him. He had only a few dollars in money on his person, and in a pair of saddlebags there were only an old broken pistol and a shirt.
I took him to headquarters. What became of him I never learned. My story is about the old pistol, which I appropriated.
On examining it I deemed it of no value, and gave it to the children of a female cousin who lived in that section, and whose house I more than once visited. At the close of the war I called there, and seeing the pistol I said to her, ‘I will take this home with me as a trophy of the war.’ She readily assented, and I put it in my pocket.
My wife and children were at the home of my father in Franklin County, Mo., about 40 miles from St. Louis. On reaching them I gave my children the pistol as a souvenir of the war, and it became a plaything for them indoors and out, and was often laying out in the weather.
After a few years my father had a sale of his household effects, and the pistol was thrown into a box of old bits of iron, and was sold with them. A year or so later I was at the house of the purchaser and saw the weapon. A desire to possess it again came upon me. I gave its history and asked for it, and it was given me. I took it to my then home in St. Louis, and again it became a toy for my children.
One day one of them came to me with the pistol and a splinter of wood in it, saying, "There is something in here." I took the splinter, pressed it in, and discovered there was something soft in the barrel. I called on my wife for a hairpin, formed a sort of screw and succeeded in drawing out a roll of greenback notes.
There were six $100 bills and four $10 bills, and the only sign of damage was rust marks from the pistol barrel on the outside of the roll. It then became manifest why the captured cotton buyer carried that old broken pistol in his saddlebags.”
**********************************************************************************************
That ex-Confederate soldier was Robert M. Boatright, born Nov. 11, 1833, in Kentucky. His father was Lineus (sometimes shown as Lemmons, sometimes as Lenearce) Boatright, born 1798 in Virginia. Robert’s mother was Elizabeth Frances Evans, born 1804 in Virginia. Robert was the fifth child of seven. The 1850 census shows Robert living with his father and mother and five of his six siblings in Franklin County.
The 1860 Census shows Robert living with his wife and two sons in Boles, Franklin County, and lists his occupation as “farmer.” Robert married Pricilla Slone Nov. 28, 1854, and they had two children Jackson and Robert. At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, the two boys were 4 and 2 years old. Robert died in Jasper County, Mo., on April 19, 1903, and is buried in the Webb City Cemetery. His wife Pricilla died April 2, 1910, and is buried next to Robert.
There is no record of slave ownership in Missouri by the Boatright family.
On Dec. 10, 1861, Robert joined the Confederate Missouri State Guard, enlisting in St. Clair County which is located in the west central part of Missouri. He mustered into Company E of the 5th Missouri Infantry along with his brother, Salathiel Boatright. Altogether, 96 men from Franklin County joined the 5th Missouri Regiment, with 86 of those in Company E.
The 5th Missouri Regiment fought east of the Mississippi River throughout the war. Included in their fighting were the battles of Corinth, Port Gibson, Luka, and Vicksburg. By May, 1865, the 5th was in Alabama under the command of Confederate Gen. Richard Taylor, son of former U.S. President Zachary Taylor.
By this time, Lee had surrendered to Grant, and Johnston had surrendered to Sherman. Gen. Taylor surrendered to Union Gen. Edward Canby on May 4, 1865, at Citronelle, Ala., about 40 miles north of Mobile. On May 13, 1865, the men of the 5th Missouri Regiment were paroled and started on their way home.
However, Robert Boatright had been captured on April 9, 1865, at the battle of Fort Blakely, Ala., and had been sent to Ship Island, Miss., and from there to Vicksburg, Miss. It appears that he was paroled around the same time as the rest of the 5th Regiment.
Robert’s brother, Salathiel, was among those who surrendered at Citronelle on May 4. Salathiel was wounded twice during the war. In 1863 in Mississippi and again in 1864 in Georgia. He married after the war and moved to Texas where his first child was born in 1868. Two additional children were born in Texas and then two more in Missouri in the late 1870s. By 1885 he was living in Parsons, Kan., and in 1910 was living in Arkansas.
Elisha Boatright, an older brother of Robert and Salathiel, was 30 and living in Franklin County when the war started in 1861. He is shown as ordered into active service on Aug. 9, 1862, in Calvery Township with the 55th Regiment, Company F, of the Enrolled Missouri Militia. Records show 29 days’ service.
He is shown with 35 days’ service with Company B, of the 54th Provisional Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri Militia from Oct.12, 1864, thru Nov. 15, 1864.
General Order No. 107 created provisional regiments to address a new wave of guerrilla activity that began in mid-1864. It was intended “to provide for local defense against bands of bushwhackers and other disturbers of the public peace, and for the maintenance of law and order more effectually than could be done by calling out the Enrolled Militia, as well as to engage all good citizens in the work.”
