She was born 21 Sep 1885 in Arkansas, and died 24 Jan 1968 in Colorado City, Mitchell County, Texas.

Notes for CARL DANIEL BOATRIGHT:

See link for photo of Carl and May Boatright children.

Carl spent his early years growing up in Bell, Runnells, Mitchell and Nolan Counties. Like many in his generation, he had only a grade school education. He was a active reader and kept up with world affairs and stayed active in politics.

From Buttonhole Kinfolks:

He spent his entire life an ranches and farms, which meant that he could do almost anything that had to be done. Like building a house for his family and a dam for a stock tank (using a Fresno). He also would calculate the amount of dirt needed and the amount of water the tank would hold. He enjoyed cooking.

He was victimized several times because he thought everyone was as honest as he. At sixty years old he was still good at roping and other ranch jobs. In 1944 he experienced a stroke and spent nine months in bed. He preferred his own hand rolled cigarettes over the ready made...and complained only when he could not roll his own. He died in Mitchell County, TX.

May was born in Perry County, Ark. Her father, James Pinckney Cowen, was in the mercantile businness and moved his family from Miss. to Ark. and then to Tex. ending up in Sweetwater Tex. May secured a teaching certificate and taught for several years before getting married. She continued tutoring her children and grandchildren the 3 R's, along with the neighborhood children, helping them get ahead in school.

The routine of washing, ironing and cooking was time consuming. The ranch was, on the route of many on their way to town for supplies and became a favorite stopping place for lunch, supper or breakfast.

After the children were out of school, she started working in a retail store, and then started a shoe store of her own. She later operated a beauty shop, a ready-to-wear department and a cafe. She worked until she had a stroke in 1967 and was in the hospital and nursing home for nine months before she died in Mitchell County, TX.

Mary Bledsoe contributed substantially to the information of her family tree. Other sources have duplicated the information, but credit should be given to Mary for her vast amount of information.

Notes for ROY ROSCOE BOATRIGHT:

Roy Roscoe and Jennie Z. Heard Boatright Gravestone

Roy grew up on a ranch in SW Nolan County. He started out working in a store. He moved to Maryneal about the time of WW I and worked in a store until he got a job loading rocks in a wheelbarrow for a contractor. He then began to do inside carpenter work. In 1919 he and his wife moved to Abilene and worked as a superintendent for G. B. McCauley, a general contractor.

He later became a general contractor himself, building houses, a stadium for the school and a Presbyterian Church and other miscellaneous structures. He had mixed feelings when his Presbyterian Church building was sold to another denomination and the congregation had a newer and bigger building built for themselves.

Roy was very active in organizing the Boatright family reunions being held in Abilene. He died in Abilene, Tx.

Roy showed slides of the Seven Wells section of Champion Creek where he almost drowned. Texas Electric has built a large lake and covered this area with water. Darrell was a Civil Engineer in Dallas.

MODY COGGIN BOATRIGHT (ELDON9, DANIEL THOMAS8, JOHN SAMUEL7, DANIEL6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 16 Oct 1896 in Texas, and died 20 Aug 1970 in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. He married (2) ESTELLA ELIZABETH KEEFER 12 Sep 1931. She was born 04 Nov 1899 in Houston, Texas, and died 20 Feb 1989 in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas.

Notes for MODY COGGIN BOATRIGHT: Mody Coggin Boatright

Mody grew up on a ranch in SW Nolen County. He taught English at the University of Texas in Austin for 42 years. He died of a heart attack following an automobile accident. He was known as a folklorist, collecting and writing essays (in the tall story Texas style). He had a publishing career that extended from 1927 until the year of his death in 1970. There are four areas to which he devoted his principal efforts: the cowboy, the American frontier, the oil industry and folklore and the folklorist in contemporary society. These area may seem disparate, but they have an essential unity. He was a cultural historian who happened to approach culture from the angle of folklore, but that approach did not warp his view of society as a whole.

Mody Boatright, folklorist and educator, the son of Eldon and Frances Ann (McAuley) Boatright, was born in Mitchell County, Texas, on October 16, 1896. He was the youngest of ten children in a ranching family and the grandnephew of pioneer cattlemen and merchants Mody and Sam Coggin of Brownwood. In early years he was educated alternately by a governess on the ranch and at school in town. He finished his high school education at West Texas State Teachers College (now West Texas A&M University), where he earned a delayed bachelor's degree in 1922, after serving two years in the army in 1917-19. He received his master's degree at the University of Texas in 1923 and his Ph.D. there in 1932. He taught at Sul Ross State Teachers College from 1923 until 1926, when he joined the staff of the University of Texas. Except for one year, 1934-35, when he was at the College of Mines and Metallurgy (now the University of Texas at El Paso), he remained at the University of Texas until he retired in 1968, rising through the ranks from junior instructor to full professor and chairman of the English department. Boatright began his career as a folklorist in 1925, when J. Frank Dobieqv asked him to contribute a tale, "The Devil's Grotto," to the next publication of the Texas Folklore Society. In 1934 Boatright published Tall Tales from Texas Cow Camps, Mody Coggin Boatright Book a collection of stories he had learned in his youth and later from cow-country students. Gib Morgan: Minstrel of the Oil Fields (1945), Boatright's second collection of tall tales, moved from the ranch to the oil patch. It presented the career and stories of a folk character comparable to Mike Fink or Johnny Appleseed. The book won him national recognition as a folklorist.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who embellished folk tales with literary touches, Boatright retold stories in an unadorned and concise style much closer to true folk narration and recognized that in oral performance these tales were very molded by the immediate situation of their telling. His work stressed the importance of studying folklore in its total cultural context and of relating it to the lives of those who practiced it. Boatright published Folk Laughter on the American Frontier in 1949. In this book he delineated the nature of the tall tale, explored many areas of folk humor, and demonstrated that frontier humor was not born of despair but was a manifestation of the buoyancy and optimism of the frontiersmen. This work, like Tall Tales from Texas Cow Camps, was innovative in suggesting that folklore may arise out of conflict between different social groups, a view at variance with the then-common notion that folklore was the result of the shared experiences of an isolated "folk."

Mody Coggin Boatright Marker In 1937 Boatright joined Dobie in editing the annual collections published by the Texas Folklore Society. In 1943 he became secretary and editor of the society; he edited annual publications until 1964. As principal editor, often with coeditors such as Donald Day,qv Allen Maxwell, and especially Wilson M. Hudson, he edited thirteen volumes of folklore in addition to the five volumes he worked on with Dobie. He was elected a fellow of the American Folklore Society in 1962 and was also a vice president of the society in the same year. He was chosen a fellow of the Texas Folklore Society in 1968, an honor previously accorded only Leonidas W. Payne, Jr., John A. Lomax, qqv and J. Frank Dobie. The Family Saga and Other Phases of American Folklore, a collection of lectures delivered by Boatright, Robert B. Downs, and John T. Flanagan, appeared in 1958. In it Boatright points out that family stories are often a fertile source of folklore. In 1963 Boatright published Folklore of the Oil Industry, the fruition of some twenty years of research. The book explores the introduction of traditional character stereotypes and motifs into the oil fields. Boatright was among the first American folklorists to study the traditions of an emerging modern industry. His investigations into folk activities in the oil fields continued, and in 1970 he published, with William A. Owens, Tales from the Derrick Floor, a pioneer work in oral history. Boatright also wrote on such topics as folklore in a literate society, the relationship between popular literature and national folk heroes, and myth in the modern world, studies which attested his belief that individuals in complex, industrialized societies are not so different from "folk" or "primitive" ones as is sometimes supposed. Three years after his death Mody Boatright, Folklorist, a collection of his essays, was published. In 1925 Boatright married Elizabeth Reck, with whom he had a daughter. His first wife died in 1929, and in 1931 he married Elizabeth E. Keefer (see boatright, elizabeth k.), with whom he had a son. Elizabeth, an artist, illustrated his first two books. Boatright was a lifelong Democrat and a member of the Texas Institute of Lettersqv and of the Writers Guild. He died in Abilene on August 20, 1970, after a heart attack.

The roadrunner (paisano) is the Texas FolkloreSociety's emblem. In his introduction to the 1978 PTFS #41, Paisanos: A Folklore Miscellany, F. E. Abernethy (then Secretary-Editor) explains:

The paisano got into the ranks of the Texas Folklore Society at the April 22, 1932, meeting presided over by Jovita González and held in the YMCA Auditorium across from The University of Texas campus. H. B. Parks, a state biologist and then secretary of the Texas Academy of Science, was the bird's sponsor, and he gave a paper on the paisano at that meeting.

Roadrunner (paisano) The Society has had at least six roadrunner artists. The best known of the Society's paisanos was drawn by Betty Boatright and is the one used on our letterhead and on the title page of our present publications. It is a neat bird and the one that I associate most closely with the Society since I've known it. Mrs. Boatright tells that around 1937, when Mody began helping Dobie with the annual publications, Mody came in one night and asked her to draw a paisano for the Society before she went to bed, which she did. Mrs. Boatright was surprised when on a later visit to the Dobies' she found her paisano framed and hanging in the hall. Dobie had begun to use it on some of his personal stationery as well as on Society materials. After Dobie died, Bertha McKee Dobie gave the picture to the Dobie Room of the University of Texas library. Although the Society has printed paisanos that look like Betty Boatright's, her particular paisano is the one with the broken lines along its tail.

Mody Boatright's wooden paisanos are about as well know as his wife's, and at the present are very rare collectors' items. Mody liked to work in his shop and was always making things, especially for his grandchildren. Mrs. Boatright thinks that it was in 1964 when he made the first two roadrunners to give to his grandchildren. He put them on a shelf and Mrs. Boatright tells about their first encounter with the public. She had sold a painting and when the man, Mrs. Richard H. King of Grapevine, came by to pick it up he saw Mody's paisanos sitting on the bookshelf; "...he picked it up and was delighted and said he had to have it. How much? I was across the room from Mody but in plain view of his face. Mody was indignant, embarrassed, his face was turning red. I cannot often save the day for people I love, but I did this time. I said, "Mr. King, you do not have money enough to buy that roadrunner, but if you make a $5.00 donation to the Texas Folklore Society, you can have it."

Mody contributed a lot of himself, body and spirit, to the Society and the paisano--mine's made of mesquite--was a part of it. He made around two hundred of them of all sizes and out of all sorts of woods. At first he got his hardwood from the scrap box of the Calcasieu Lumber Company. Later he milled mesquite and even bois d'arc and made paisanos from that. He made all his cuts by eye and no two birds are alike.

Notes for ESTELLA ELIZABETH KEEFER:

Elizabeth Keefer Boatright, etcher and water colorist, the daughter of James Blair and Estelle (Cherry) Keefer, was born in Houston, Texas, on November 4, 1899. She decided that she would pursue a career in art after she won second place in a nationwide art contest for children when she was seven. She attended the Southern Seminary in Virginia from 1915 to 1917 and then began studying art under a Mrs. Creager, whom she accompanied to Washington, D.C.

Always a person of independence and strong opinion, Elizabeth decided she was being taught in the wrong way and returned to Houston, but was more determined than ever to learn to paint. In 1920 she enrolled at the Art Institute in Chicago where she studied until 1924. That year she went to New York to study at the Art Students League. She left because of the death of her mother but returned the next year at the request of Joseph Pennell, the etcher, to become his assistant. In the fall of 1926 she joined the faculty of Sul Ross State College in Alpine, Texas, as art instructor. There she became interested in western themes, particularly Indians.

She visited reservations in northern New Mexico and was the first white woman given permission to sketch there. She married Mody C. Boatright in 1931 but did not join him in Austin until the end of the 1931-32 school year; they had two children. She continued to work in Indian materials, doing graphic arts and etchings from 1929 to 1937 and watercolors from 1927 to 1947. She worked in Taos, Idelfonso, and Conchiti Pueblo. She became known as the "Etcher of Indians." Some of her more notable etchings include The Sand Painter (Navajo), Storm Cloud on Wind (1927, Navajo), Black Eagle Dance (Pueblo), and Singing in the Moonlight (Taos). This last item was selected as one of the hundred best etchings of 1934. She developed a technique for making etchings with color. No other etcher in the country had used the process. The United States Museum of Graphic Arts in Washington in 1934 invited her to send a solo show of thirty etchings, and from that show her Hurrying Lady was selected to become part of the permanent collection.

Elizabeth Boatright gave up etching when she saw her young son perilously close to a container of acid she used in her work. After that she devoted her energies almost entirely to watercolor painting, although she occasionally worked in oil. As an opponent to the abstract painting taught by the art faculty at the University of Texas she was challenged by a faculty member, who suggested that she was incapable of producing abstract art; she proceeded to paint a 45"-by-60" abstract that was highly successful. She then returned to doing watercolor landscapes. In the late 1940s and into the 1960s she organized art classes in towns in the Austin area. These classes resulted in art clubs and an increased interest in art that still continues. After the death of her husband in 1970 she moved to Corpus Christi and began painting seascapes. Her Fisherman's Wharf was selected to go on tour in Mexico with a show of American art. Except for an interim in Georgetown, she lived in Corpus Christi for the rest of her life. Early on she was elected to the Pen and Brush Club in New York (1925) and the Chicago Society of Etchers (1930). She later became a member of the Texas Fine Arts Associationqv and the Texas Watercolor Society. The list of shows in which her work was displayed covers some twelve typed pages. In 1936, for example, her work was displayed in Dallas, Buffalo, New York (on two occasions), Santa Fe, Philadelphia, Fort Worth, and Austin. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Southwestern Museum of Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe; the United States National Museum of Graphic Arts, Washington; the Feldman Collection, Dallas; the Texas Memorial Museumqv and the Texas Fine Arts Association, Austin; and the Museum of the Big Bend,qv Alpine. She was known primarily as Elizabeth Keefer to the art world. Her own selection of her most outstanding works includes The Sand Painter (a good example of her use of color in etchings), Storm Cloud on Wind, Black Eagle Dance, and Singing in the Moonlight. Elizabeth Keefer Boatright died on February 20, 1989, in Corpus Christi.

Notes for AUGUSTUS "GUY" BOATRIGHT:

Augustus Gus Boatright

Guy was named Augustus, but disliked his name and adopted the name, Guy, which he used on all legal documents. As a younster, he would threaten anyone who called him by his real name.

He was born in Coleman County, TX and attended Bryan Academy (now Texas A and M). He came to Indian Territory with his family in 1889. He helped at his father's livery stable in Hartshorne after school. After his father's death he moved with his family to Featherston, I. T. where he worked on a ranch for his uncle L. C. 'Doc' Featherston, who had named Featherston after himself.

He worked with his brother D.T. (Dee) at the Ft. Worth Stockyards until marriage to Bessie. They lived in Blocker where he ranched and bought and traded horses and cows. After his divorce he married a school teacher from Quinton, OK, sold his ranch and moved to Crowder, where they purchased a hotel and cafe. He continued to trade cattle. He bought minerals for speculation. They sold the hotel in 1931 and built a bus station and cafe.

After Guy's death, Effie continued to operate the cafe and bus station until she was killed by a toronado that destroyed much of Crowder in 1949.

Notes for JESSE SHERMAN DRAPER:

Jesse, son of Elias Draper and Bettie, was born in Astoria (Wright County) MO. He wrote letters to Ola from Buckley, WA, Leadville, and Cripplecreek, County. He returned to Dow, OK where he entered the mining business. He bought a farm about three miles SW of Clayton, OK on the old Stanley road. He continued to work in Dow and many times walked eight hours to get home on the weekend. (Through and over the mountains) He and Ola were married in Nolan County, TX.

I remember visiting in the home of Jesse's sister, Rosie Vaughn. She had two or three large bird cages (about 3ft. by 3ft. by 2 1/2ft. high). Each cage had eight or ten canarys. Some birds were raining young. Some hens were setting on eggs, and it seemed that most of the birds were singing. Their song overlapped to create some of the purtiest resonance of music that I can remember.

It was some time before I realized that Rosie's husband, Jim, being a miner wanted to have a bird to take with him when he went to work.

When Clarence and his sister were living at Arch, Oklahoma, he was major, chief of police, Postmaster and operator of the general store.

Martha (his sister) taught school at Ti, Hartshorne, Arch and Backe (all in Oklahoma) Martha's brother, John, says that when he was her student, she made an example of him. He was spanked often for any infraction. He also resented his sister being in the position to spank him.

Lela B. Nunnelley

Tucson, Sunday, January 27, 1974

Some tourist who visit Boothill Cemetery in Tombstone question that there are graves there and treat the area with less respect than is due.

Mrs. Lela B. Nunnelley, who spent 16 years caring for the cemetery and who was largely responsible for researching the area, feels very deeply about this. In 1946 her husband Emmett, who was a mining man made an agreement the city of Tombstone to care for the area and to restore the graves. He died a year later and his wife took over the task.

She talked to many of the oldtimers of the town, some who remembered visiting the area when they were children and putting flowers on specific graves. She searched old records, succeeded in locating 250 graves and identifying some of them. In 1940 there were 180 known graves, and of these only eight were identified.

Boot Hill Cemetery

She said the area now visited by tourists was not used as a graveyard after 1884. There are two other graveyards in the area, one a Jewish cemetery and the other a Chinese cemetery where most of the bodied were disinterred and returned to China by relatives.

Mrs. Nunnelley, now 80 years old, gave up her care of the cemetery in 1961. While she was caring for the area, she said people would come from all over the country trying to locate the grave of a relative, known to have been in Tombstone, but who had completely disappeared. "I think a lot of people took on assumed names when they came there," she said, "and no one ever did know who they really were."

Practically no one in Tombstone in those days died from old age, They shot each other, were killed by Indians, committed suicide, were hanged, sometimes by mistake, died of poisoning, or were taken off by disease. The mortality rate for children was high, and they died of diphtheria, scarlet fever or accidents. Men were killed in mining accidents, died of tuberculosis and two unknown Chinese were noted as having died of leprosy.

Boot Hill Cemetery The gunmen, the madams, the dance-hall girls and the respectable element of the town all lie together. It didn't take much to cause sudden death in Tombstone. One William Clayborne shot James Hichey because Hichey insisted that Clayborne have a dirnk with him. T.J. Waters was shot because of the color of his shirt. No one knows what color it was, or who objected to it.

Margarita, a dance-hall girl, quarreled with Gold Dollar, another dance-hall girl, over a man. Gold Dollar won the fight, fatally stabbing Margarita.

George Johnson was hanged by mistake. He bought a horse he didn't know was stolen. Billy Kinsman was shot by a jealous woman.

Questions have been raised in the past about the authenticity of the graveyard, but Mrs. Nunnelley has no doubts herself that people actually were buried there. When she first went to the area some of the graves had fallen in. She said they usually fell in where the head of the coffin was, as in the old days it was customary to put glass there, and when the glass broke this was the part of the grave to fail. "There would be a distinct, moldy, musty odor from the grave," she said.

Boot Hill Cemetery

Mrs Nunnelley, who says most of the markers were in place when she came to Tombstone, having been erected by her husband and the townspeople, began her study of the people supposedly buried there so she could answer questions from the hundred of tourists who visit the area every year.

Speaking of the years she tended the cemetery and operated a gift shop on the premises, she recalls that "there was a problem every day."

One woman requested that her pet monkey be buried in Boothill, one couple wanted to be married there. Both these requests were turned down. A bunch of "tough looking characters" wearing guns showed up one day and she called the sheriff, anticipating trouble. The visitors turned out to be actors from a movie on location nearby. One of them, Glenn Ford, commented, "Your lawmen get here a lot quicker than ours."

One day she saw a man going through the turnstile and the wind lifted his coat tails to reveal that he was carrying a gun. Mrs. Nunnelley challenged him to show his permit to carry a gun. He was an FBI man, and bristled a bit. "But he wasn't really mad, and he gave me some tips about watching for shoplifter in the store." she recalled.

The descendants of one man, who visited Tombstone to try and locate his grave, were delighted that he had been killed in a mine accident, and not hung as they had always thought.

Is she really sure the proper people are buried under the proper markers? "Well, in a situation like that you can never be completely sure," she said.

John S. Woodward stated in his book Buttonhole Cousins that running the curio shop was Lela's business when she was restoring Boot Hill to prominance.

Tombstone's famous "Boothill Graveyard"

Tombstone's famous "Boothill Graveyard" was originally plotted in 1878 and was first named "The Tombstone Cemetery". It was used as the city's main cemetery until the current cemetery, "Tombstone Cemetery" at the end of Allen Street was opened up in 1884. Afterwards, additional burials would be added from time to time.

Boot Hill Cemetery

There was a section for all the Chinese and another area for the Jewish. It is believed some 300 persons in all were buried here. It was common for bodies to be found in various parts in and ouside of town, with no one ever being able to identify them, and they were interred with no markings, or as "unknown".

After the new cemetery was opened up, Boothill Graveyard went neglected. The original grave markers were all made of wood, with painted inscriptions, and withered away under the elements. Some markers were stolen by souvenir hunters. In 1923, the city contacted several of its residents to help locate and identify graves. A boy scout troop had also set about to clean up the cemetery. In the 1940's, Emmett Nunnelly, a Tombstone resident, organized and effort to restore the cemetery to its original state. Harry Fulton Ohm, owner of the famous Bird Cage Theatre, donated new steel markers from his plant, which are the same markers that remain today.

The cemetery lies about 60 miles southeast Tucson, AZ. To reach the cemetery, take Interstate 10 to the city of Benson. From there, head south along highway 80 until you reach Tombstone. The cemetery lies on the outskirts of town, and is easily visible from the roadway.
