African-American Boat(w)right Family Genealogy
African-American Boat(w)rights - Early Census Records
The Boatwright family was almost exclusively a southern family until the mid 1700s, when some branches of the family ventured to the mid-west. Even then, our family remained predominately a southern family, until well into the 1900s. A number of the Boatwright families owned slaves. One of the few records of slaves in the Boatwright family is the U.S. Census, taken every 10 years since 1790. Prior to 1870, slaves were enumerated on the census in numbers and age only, no names.
The 1790 Census
The 1790 census included a listing of heads of households only. There were five Boat(w)right households (two in North Carolina and three in South Carolina) enumerated in the 1790 census. There were many households that were not included in the 1790 census and some states (including Virginia) that did not participate. Therefore, the five Boat(w)right households included in the census are a subset of the total Boat(w)right households at the time. Only one (Daniel Boatright - Stokes County, North Carolina) of the five households enumerated indicated the ownership of slaves.
Daniel's 1790 Census record image above shows two free white males over age 16, two free white males under age 16, five free white females and five slaves; fourteen total in the household.
The 1800 Census
The 1800 census included a listing of heads of households only. There were ten Boat(w)right households (five in North Carolina and five in South Carolina) enumerated in the 1800 census. There were many households that were not included in the 1800 census and some states that did not fully participate. Three of the ten households enumerated indicated the ownership of slaves.
