Baker Boatwright was enumerated in Jefferson County in 1870. Many of his descendents lived in Jefferson and neighboring Burke Counties. There were no Boatwright slave owners in Jefferson County in 1860, but there were a several in the near-by counties (George E. Boatwright and his wife Elizabeth in Washington County were the nearest Boatwright slave owners).

Notes for BAKER BOATWRIGHT:

Jethro Boatwright was born in 1915 in Georgia, his father is Aaron Boatwright, son of Baker Boatwright and he had 13 children. My grandfather (Jethro) said that he was told by his father (Aaron) that the family was originally from Virginia... slaves that were sold to Georgia before the Civil War.

Note: the 1880 Burke County Census show a Baker Carswell listed immediately before Baker and Edna on the census. The census taker indicated that Baker Boatwright was a member of the Carswell family. It is unclear whether the census taker recorded in error, or perhaps Edna's maiden name was Carswell. Baker Carswell is not listed on the 1870 or the 1900 census for Burke County.On Baker and Edna's son, Baker Jr. death certificate, Edna's maiden name is listed as "Stephens".
