11-22. SAMUEL JOSEPH BOATWRIGHT (SAMUEL JOSEPH11, SAMUEL JOSEPH10, SAMUEL JOSEPH9, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, JOHN6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 24 Nov 1932 in Scottsville, Albermarle County, Virginia, and died 04 Sep 2013 in Keene, Albermarle County, Virginia. He married MARGARET "PEGGY" O'CONNELL 02 Jan 1954 in Lexington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Notes for SAMUEL JOSEPH BOATWRIGHT:
Samuel Joseph "S.J." Boatwright Jr., 80, of Keene, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 4, 2013.
He was born in Esmont on November 24, 1932, on Thanksgiving Day while his father was out turkey hunting. He always celebrated his birthday on Thanksgiving Day, no matter the date. His parents were the late Samuel Joseph and Dorothy Allen Harris Boatwright.
As a boy he loved sports, hunting and fishing, and spending time on the mountain with his grandfather. He graduated from Scottsville High School and enlisted in the United States Navy.
He served aboard the U.S.S. Hailey during the Korean Conflict and earned two battle stars. He circumnavigated the globe and loved to reminisce about his days on ship. While in the Navy, he took a side trip to see the Concord Bridge and met his wife of 59 years, Margaret "Peggy" O'Connell Boatwright. They were married while he was on shore leave on January 2, 1954, in Lexington, Massachusetts.
S.J. and his family moved back to Esmont, in 1963, from Oxen Hill, Maryland. Along with Clarence Massie, he began the construction company of Massie and Boatwright. They built many of the homes in Scottsville and the surrounding area for over 30 years.
He enjoyed politics and was very proud of his work with George Allen throughout all of George's campaigns. He loved to tell the story about how he went to a Tupperware party in Esmont, and convinced all of the women to promise to vote for George. George won by that exact number of votes the next day.
He took pleasure in sharing that he was a registered Democrat that worked for Republican candidates. He always supported the person who he thought was the best choice for the office. He never missed the opportunity to sit at the polls in Scottsville on Election Day.
S.J. served on the Boards of Trosdale Home for Boys and Pine Knot, Theodore Roosevelt's cabin in southern Albemarle County. He was responsible for the first restoration of the cabin.
He loved sitting at Lumpkin's Restaurant early each morning and drinking coffee with the regulars. He was also dedicated to his church, St. Stephen's in Esmont and its former Pastor, the Reverend Peter T. Way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew; his sister, Frances; and a special nephew, Vance. Survivors include his beloved wife, Peggy; his daughters, Lynn and husband, Daniel Brenig, and their daughter, Esther, of Esmont, Diane and husband, Tony Pullaro, and their sons, Nicholas and his wife, Trista, and Dakota, all of Esmont, Beth Faulkner of Charlottesville, and Jeanne and her husband, Dan McGheehan, and their children, Samuel and Danica of Faber.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Piedmont for all of their kindness and care over the past two weeks. It is greatly appreciated.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2013, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be conducted on 11 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Esmont. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
All friends are invited to the Scottsville Fire House following the services to join the family for a time of food and fellowship while sharing and remembering S.J.'s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the S.J. Boatwright Memorial Fund, 146 James River Road, Scottsville, VA 24590 to be used for the reopening of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Family and friends may share memories and photos at www.thackerbrothers.com.

i. ALVA EDWIN BOATWRIGHT, b. 1947, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee; d. 24 Nov 2007, Collinwood, Wayne County, Tennessee. Notes for ALVA EDWIN "EDDIE" BOATWRIGHT: Originally Posted by Memphis Commercial Appeal Ex-police chief Boatwright ushered to rest with honors By Tom Bailey Jr. Friday, November 30, 2007 The service Eddie Boatwright arranged for himself proved to be a funeral spectacular on Thursday. Helicopters flew. A horse walked. Rifles fired. Bagpipes and a bugle blew sweetly. A violin and piano played beautifully. The ritual had firetrucks, a Tennessee Highway Patrol honor guard, a flag-draped coffin, scores of uniformed mourners and a motorcycle escort. But most of all, the service offered wonderful stories about Boatwright, Germantown's colorful former police chief (1989-97) and former deputy director of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. He died Saturday of pancreatic cancer at age 60. Former colleagues, police Capt. Dick Clinton, TEMA planning director Mac Purdy and former mayor Charles Salvaggio told lots of anecdotes about their friend. Like the times Boatwright, who thought big, tried and failed to get approval to start a horse patrol, boat patrol (on the Wolf River) and a helicopter operation for the Germantown department. "He couldn't get that one past the mayor, either," Clinton said, bringing laughter to hundreds of mourners at Germantown Baptist Church. Boatwright got no boat, but oversaw a boatload of improvements to the Police Department. He stabilized the force by working to increase salaries and retirement benefits for officers. He also made the department more self-sufficient, boosted specialized training with a SWAT team, K-9 and drug units, standardized the officers' weapons by having the city buy them and started Neighborhood Watch, Clinton said. Boatwright loved guns and helicopters, Purdy said. He recalled seeing Boatwright wearing an FBI hat and overalls during a weapons-qualification exercise. "That was him in his element," Purdy said. "He glowed when he talked about his gun collection." Salvaggio said he once asked Boatwright how he dealt so well with people after seeing firsthand all the horrible things people do to each other. "He said, 'Charles, there's good people and bad people. I know I have to rise above those things and deal with the people still here.' " Boatwright's funeral rose above the ordinary. His arrangements included the 50-line soliloquy of Shakespeare's "Henry V," performed expertly -- and from memory -- by Purdy. After an hour, the service moved to the church's front yard. Dozens of police stood together in their dress uniforms. Scores of TEMA personnel who came from across the state wore their tactical tan pants and black shirts. Seven white-gloved members of the Germantown SWAT team fired a 21-round salute. Col. Mike Walker of the Tennessee Highway Patrol played "Taps." The droning from the west signaled the fast approach of three Highway Patrol helicopters. Over the church, one copter broke formation, veering south for a missing-man fly-by. Led by a mounted Tennessee State Parks ranger, the hearse slowly rolled away before picking up an escort of Highway Patrol motorcycles. Originally Posted by Memphis Commercial Appeal Boatwright 'left world better place' Ex-Germantown police chief was 'true hero' By Clay Bailey Sunday, November 25, 2007 Former Germantown Police Chief Eddie Boatwright sat on his porch with friends a couple of months ago peacefully watching the Middle Tennessee sunset. He was still laughing, still pulling practical jokes and having a pretty good time for a 60-year-old man who had been given the death sentence that he had pancreatic cancer. "I'm not going to change just because I'm dying," the former chief said laughing. On Saturday afternoon, Mr. Boatwright, who later went on to serve a short stint as police chief in Clifton, Tenn. and eventually became deputy director of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, lost the battle with the cancer he learned about in April. He died at his home in Wayne County north of Collinwood. Services are scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. at Germantown Baptist Church. "The man was fearless. He feared no one in life, be they criminals or politicians," said Brian Roper, who served 71/2 years as Mr. Boatwright's deputy chief, and was a close friend. "He was a true hero. He was totally honest and truthful. He never feared death, either. He faced it like the true man that he was." Mr. Boatwright retired in 1997 after eight years as Germantown's police chief. He was a reserve in 1974 and became a dispatcher in 1975 before joining the department as a full-time officer a year later. He moved up to assistant chief under Bob Cochran and was named chief on June 26, 1989, after Cochran retired. During his tenure, the suburb was known for its low crime rate and adding special patrols, such as directed traffic enforcement and a dog squad, and organizing efforts following the 1994 tornado. He increased staffing on the department and advanced computer operations. Mike Hill, a program manager with the University of Tennessee Law Enforcement Innovation Center, said he learned from Mr. Boatwright's actions when Hill was a Germantown police officer and detective. Hill said the former chief knew constitutional and criminal law, and he combined street smarts with an Andy Griffith-type approach to dealing with people. Mr. Boatwright's demeanor helped him when dealing with the public, a victim or a suspect. "He took me under his wing," Hill said Sunday. "I learned a lot from Eddie on how to treat people. You treat them with the same kind of respect, and you'll get what you need." Mr. Boatwright twice served as president of the state Association of Chiefs of Police and was a past president of the Metropolitan Association of Chiefs of Police. After leaving Germantown, Mr. Boatwright moved to a 300-acre spread in Wayne County that he and his wife, Nancy, called Rocky Hollow Ranch. "I thought when I left police work, I was done," Mr. Boatwright said. "I would retire to the farm, ride the tractor and ride the horses. It just didn't work out." He joined the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency a month after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and eventually became deputy director. Mr. Boatwright had resolved himself to the future after the cancer diagnosis, bypassing radiation and chemotherapy that might have extended his life for what he considered a better quality of life in his remaining days. "I'm going out on my terms and it's not over in the corner throwing up," Mr. Boatwright said this spring. "I'm dead man walking." Mr. Boatwright seemed to take the news in stride almost from the time he heard there was little hope of overcoming the pancreatic cancer. He spent his last months learning woodworking, shooting his guns on the farm and entertaining visitors. A friend built a model railroad layout for him to watch in his final months. "So many friends and colleagues have come by to honor Eddie for what he's done throughout his career in law enforcement and emergency management," his wife, Nancy, said recently. She added: "They all recognize that he's made contributions to those professions and that he's left the world a better place." In addition to his wife, and son, Robert E. Boatwright of Memphis, Mr. Boatwright leaves his parents Edwin and Helen Boatwright of Memphis and two sisters, Joyce Fay of Woodstock, Ill., and Ruth Caldwell of Tucson, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee. Alva Edwin "Eddie" BOATWRIGHT JR. He leaves his wife, Nancy Jehl Boatwright; his son, Robert Edwin Boatwright of Memphis; and his parents, Edwin and Helen Boatwright of Memphis. He also leaves his sisters, Joyce Fay of Woodstock, IL and Ruth Caldwell of Tucson, AZ. Eddie began his career in law enforcement in Germantown as a part-time Dispatcher in 1974, and rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police in 1989. Millington pharmacy fetes 50 years of service
By Clay Bailey
Memphis Commercial Appeal
Friday, November 2, 2007
Talking to Leroy Boatwright, it's easy to understand how he survives in the disappearing world of independent pharmacists.
It's the down-home rapport he has with customers at his Millington drug store. His personal touch. His familiarity and a kind word.
"What in the world has happened to you?" Boatwright says as a customer teeters to the counter leaning on a cane. "You can't go scuba diving like that, can you?" To another, the 82-year-old pharmacist says simply: "You're mighty kind and mighty sweet."
Saturday, the business on C Street near Navy Road will celebrate 50 years of Boatwright and his family greeting and treating customers just that way. When Boatwright and wife, Peggy, decided to start a family, he decided to start a business. A tip from an associate led him to Millington and the purchase of the old Barbour-Andrews Pharmacy on Easley Street.
"We were coming to a strange town, not knowing anybody," the white-haired, bespectacled Boatwright recalled this week. "No money and a young baby 4 months old, and the people were real kind and good to us."
He operated the original store 10 years then moved to another spot around the corner for another decade before settling into the current storefront at 7899 C Street 30 years ago.
The store deals in candy and trinkets, salves and ointments, canes and crutches and a heavy dose of customer service.
Curtis White grew up with Leroy Boatwright in Holly Springs, Miss., and the two have kept in touch during White's career in pharmaceutical sales. He said the family's loyalty to the community and their customers has helped make the business successful even as national chains such as Walgreens seemingly invade every corner.
"There are not many independent pharmacists left," White said. "He's the kind who's not working for the money. ... He has survived by giving service."
The store always has been family run. Peggy kept the books. All three children are pharmacists, including Steven, who is handling a good portion of the day-to-day operations now. By some accounts, Steven grew up in the store, his early duties involved milling around under the cash register for loose change. The two daughters, Laura Smith and Emily Provence, are not only pharmacists, but they married pharmacists.
Steven, 42, said the store's reputation for customer service started with his father and served the family well.
"You know people by name," Steven said. "You give them personal service, make yourself available. Let them ask questions and help them any way you can. It's just the little things. That's our bread and butter."
There have even been times that Leroy Boatwright delivered a prescription or opened the store in the middle of the night.
"I came down one night and got a lady a can of baby milk," Boatwright said. "I don't think she ever spent another dime with me. That lady really appreciated me getting out of bed for that baby milk."
Customers coming out of the store this week reiterated the customer-friendly atmosphere.
"They're just nice," said Jimmy Schmall, 47, of Millington. "They're just good people. They keep up with you and care about you."
"It's the personal touch they give you," added Carolyn Micheli of Millington , who has shopped at the store for about 18 years. "It's more like family. I've tried Walgreens and Rite-Aid and Wal-Mart, Super D. You just don't find that in the others."
Saturday's celebration at the store will include a cake-cutting about 3 p.m. and some giveaways and refreshments during the day. Boatwright is looking forward to the hoopla, but he's not sure how many of his original customers will attend. Like the mom-and-pop drug stores of the past, there aren't many of them left.

Notes for WILLIAM HAYDEN BOATWRIGHT:
I was researching the Boatwrights for my father in law. He was, William Hayden Boatwright. I am so thankful that I got a lot of it finished for him before he passed away on October 18, 2000. He really enjoyed reading about his family. I always thought it was interesting that he was born in New Mexico and married a woman from eastern Kentucky. He spent his life from the time he got out of service in Kentucky. You are more than welcome to email me at hazelb@eastky.net
