He married ELIZABETH FAUST 09 Jun 1800 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, daughter of BURRELL FAUST and CHRISTIANA KELLEY. She was born 1783 in Richland County, South Carolina, and died 27 Jul 1855 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina.

James Boatwright Portrait, oil on canvas, ca. 1838. James Boatwright was born on February 13, 1773, and lived in Columbia. He was a manufacturer of cotton gins that were used throughout the South. He married Elizabeth Faust and their home was on the site of the old court house in Columbia. Boatwright died on May 13, 1857. Collection: The Reverend James C. Glass, Ormond Beach, Florida. James Boatwright came to Granby, S. C. from Virginia in the 1790's and worked for Col. Thomas Taylor at his mill on Gill Creek, began building cotton gins in 1806, and became one of Columbia's leading pioneer citizens. Under the SC State License from Eli Whitney, he built cotton gins for over 50 years. When he died in 1857, he was accorded the first public funeral in the city of Columbia. He was partners with William Glaze in the Palmetto Armory, which later became Shields Foundary.

The 1835 river-steamer JAMES BOATWRIGHT was named in his honor by the steamship company whose charter he helped secure. He is buried under the annex at the Washington Street United Methodist Church. He had eleven children; four died young but most of the descendents of Mary Ann, Sarah, Martha, Burrell Thomas, Elizabeth Christina, James Sampson, and John Henry.

"Nevertheless, canal construction spawned a flurry of interest in steamboat traffic from the Midlands to Charleston. Between 1817 and 1824, merchants representing both Columbia and Charleston chartered no less than five companies in the vain hope of emulating the genious of Robert Fulton. Some individuals promised to reactivate warehouses at Granby, while others offered canal boat connections from that point to Columbia; however, season conditions once more made service unpredictable and untrustworthy. Then, in the mid-1830's, cotten gin maker James Boatright formed the Columbia Steam Boat Company with the intent of building a special shallow-draft vessel suitable for the waters of the Congaree. His boat, The James Boatwright, began service to Charleston in November 1835 and three months later made a record round trip in seven days and seven hours. On another occasion, the James Boatwright completed the down river journey in only twenty four hours running time, that is, if one overlooks a six-hour delay en route. Despite such heroics, the steamboat, like the canal, and for many of the same reasons, did little to solve the transportation dilemma faced by Richland County residents."

A letter from John G. Bowman to John C. Calhoun
Dated September 13, 1845
Columbia, South Carolina

" My Dear Sir, I received the favor of the 9th inst. and promptly avail myself of the earliest opportunity of obtaining the information you desire, in giving which, I will follow the order you observe in your letter.

The price of a machine is $75. Freight to Hamburgh $3.50. Mr. (James) Boatwright will therefore deliver one at Hamburgh, consigned to whomsoever you may designate for $78.50.

Colonel Benjamin F. Taylor of this place, had had one in use for a length of time, is much pleased with its performance, does not regard it as liable to get out of repair, and should it do so, thinks, from its extreme and admirable simplicity, that it could easily be repaired. With regard to the duration, that is yet to be tested - with proper care and management however, it is believed by competent judges that it will do service 20 years, with little or no repair. They are regarded by all that have tried them as superior to any other machine with which they are acquainted. Indeed, it is difficult to conceive any thing better adapted to the purpose intended. Mr. Boatwright does not know the precise weight, but is confident it does not exceed 400 lbs. - say 350. Waggoners haul freight from this place to Greenville, (upwards of 100 miles) at from 75c to $1.00 per hundred. I do not know the distance from Hamburgh to Pendleton, but think it cannot exceed 100 miles - and the whole cost delivered to you, ought not to exceed $83 or $84.

Mr. Boatwright is no "humbug". I repose entire confidence in his integrity, judgement, and even disinterestedness, for although he has these and various other machines manufactured, yet, he is by no means dependent upon his success in this branch of his business, (for he is among our wealthiest citizens) and I believe it more a natural penchant for such things than the desire of gain, particularly, that induces him to carry on this business. Mr. B. too, is a native of Columbia, and deserves much credit for having reared a large and respectable family, and the only fault I find with the old gentleman is, that I cannot prevail upon him to give up his occasional glass.

It will afford me much pleasure to serve you in any way I can, and I sincerely trust, that you will not hesitate to command my services whenever you desire them. Should you see Dr. (Frederick W.) Symmes, be so kind as to present him with my most respectful compliments - also, his interesting lady, in which Mrs. Bowman unites with me, and be pleased to accept for yourself the assurance of my sincere and most respectful consideration..... John G. Bowman.

P.S. We had a fire yesterday evening, which destroyed some 5 or 6 houses in the "business" portion of our town."

Elizabeth Faust Boatwright Photo - taken mid 1850s Mr. James S. Boatwright and Cotton Gins.

Whitney was the actual inventor of the cotton gin, but Mr. James S. Boatwright, of this city, made such improvements upon it, that cotton men generally give the credit to the latter. At the time he was in the employ of Col. Tom Taylor, in a small factory on Dent's Pond, a few miles east of the city. The walls of the building are still standing. As Mr. B., Sr., got up in years, his son, Samuel, superintended the business. The Boatwright homestead was on the site of the present Court House, northwest corner Sumter and Washington streets. The old gentleman was very democratic in his ideas and could be seen on the streets constantly in warm weather in his shirt-sleeves. One evening, during a fire-alarm, he was knocked down and so badly injured that it resulted in his death. Mr. B. knew who was responsible, but refused to give the name of the party, saying it was an accident. He had several sons and daughters and a number of descendants, but they are scattered, and but few of them reside in Columbia.

Notes for GEORGE EARL BOATWRIGHT:

Source: Author: Ricker, Norman H.
Title: "Index & Outline: The Boat(w)right and Allied Families"
Publication: LDS Library, Salt lake City, Utah, 1989
Note: Material Compiled by Lt. Col. Wm. E. Boatright, Cabool, Missouri

George Boatright (the elder) bought his first 200 acres of land in Washington County from Charles Roley, bordered by Mason McClendon, on Feb 18, 1812.

From Rory Boatright:

I found evidence that shows conclusively that the George was not George Franklin, but George E. All the deeds just have George, but his son George gave a power of attorney to his brother James and put his name as "George E. Boatright, Jr."(#7-296). Also, some records survived the courthouse fire, and they show the son as George E. Boatright on probate records and his marriage to Elizabeth Sessions. I think the "E" might stand for Early because his grandson was named Mack Early and his grandson was named Frank Early (my grandfather).

Anyway, back to the big find. Sherman burned the Sandersville courthouse during the Civil War, so they don't have any records prior to 1865. I was knocking around in the probate area and the tax-assessor asked me who I was researching, and I told her George Boatright. She looked stunned and said you are kidding, hold on a minute. She comes back with a manila envelope which says "George Boatright Land Records 1860". She said when she first took office, the envelope was stuck in the back of her desk. It was like a deed abstract of George Boatright's land holdings all the way back to the 1790's, some copies, some were the original deeds, including the deeds prior to George's purchase.

BUT, THE BIG FIND - stuck amongst the deeds was a letter of administration from the clerk of the ordinary in Barnwell, South Carolina, granting administration to SABREY BOATRIGHT for the Estate of AMBROSE BOATRIGHT, probate date was May, 1801, most likely deceased during the prior 12 months.

Ambrose Boatright Letter

So, there is George's Mom and Dad, I'm guessing. I can't imagine why else the letter would be in with George's deeds. Also, I am guessing a bit as to Ambrose's name - it only shows up once and is a little hard to read, but for now, I am calling it Ambrose. It might be something like Amrrone or Amrrove or Ammrose, which neither name makes much sense. But Sabrey is a definite since it shows up 3 times, and it was a common name at the time.
