Boat(w)right Family Genealogy in America

Generation 7

7-294. RALEIGH "ROLLY" BOATWRIGHT (GEORGE EARL3, AMBROSE2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 1805 in Georgia, and died 1891 in Georgia. He married (1) SOPHIA MCLENDON, daughter of MASON MCLENDON and MARY DEAN. She was born 29 Jan 1804 in Montgomery County, Georgia, and died 10 Jul 1838 in Talbot County, Georgia. He married (2) ELIZABETH HARDEN 11 Dec 1838 in Washington County, Georgia. She was born 1819 in Georgia, and died 1888 in Georgia.

Notes for RALEIGH "ROLLY" BOATWRIGHT:

In February 1784, an act of Georgia Legislature formed and defined Washington County from Indian Lands ceded in 1783. Washington was the ninth county formed in Georgia and is said to be the first in the nation to be named after GEORGE WASHINGTON. Washington County is known as the "Kaolin Capital of the World" due to the prosperity it has seen over the years from it's rich deposits of the "white gold". In it's early years, the county was much larger and eventually gave up land to form other counties such as Greene, Johnson, Montgomery, Hancock, Jefferson, Emanuel and Laurens. Today, Washington County is composed of the County Seat, Sandersville and smaller towns such as Warthen, Tennille, Riddleville, Oconee, Deepstep, Davisboro and Harrison, all rich in heritage, tradition and southern hospitality!

Rolly, a son of George and Zilpha (Roebuck) Boatwright was born in Washington County, Georgia, about 1805. He married twice. His first wife was Sophia McClendon, daughter of Mason McClendon of Washington County.

Mason McClendon moved to Talbot County, Georgia, where he died leaving a will. In the will, he mentioned his six surviving children, and grandchildren, Mack Early, and Zilpha Ann, who were children of Rolly Boatwright. Their mother and wife of Rolly was deceased by January 1, 1941, the date of McClendon's will. Rolly was appointed guardian of his children, without security, May 5, 1841. They were minors and under age to choose their guardian.

Rolly was a fortunate winner in the 1827 Land Lottery. He won Lot 67, 12th District of Lee County. He was head of a family in 1830. Rolly married his second wife, Elizabeth Harden, in Washington County, December 11, 1838. They remained there until after 1840, and were found in Pulaski County, Georgia, in 1850. They were in Pulaski as late as 1870.

Elizabeth (Harden) Boatwright was born in Georgia, about 1820 according to the censuses.

Notes for SOPHIA MCLENDON:

Will of Mason McLendon, father of Sophia McLendon:

Talbot County Wills Volume A, 1827 - 1856:
January 5, 1841, Mason McLendon of Talbot Co., weak in body.

To my beloved wife Mary, my negro man Arthur, woman Tiner, 2 boy children, Mathison & Dennis, and a girl Martha & their future increase. Also a bay mare called Blaze, and an equal share of my corn, fodder, stock, etc., furniture, as much as she may want, $50 in money, and the 16 ft. and 10 ft. room in my new building, now erecting, with the privilege of the yard to the road, and the south half of #50. It is my desire that a chimney be put into my new building, at the expense of my estate, as soon as it can be done. My wife Mary shall have all of the above during her natural life. My desire is that all the property allotted to my wife revert back to my estate and be equally divided between my 6 surviving children, Willis, Mack, Mary, Harty, Harriet & Francis. If any of these children die before their mother, their heirs should inherit their distributive share; the new buildings excepted. To my 2 grandchildren, Mack Early & Zilphia Boatright, 2 negro girls, Riller & Gracy, with their present & future increase. I also give them a tract of land in Washington Co. known as the Padget & Hartley lands. containing 460 acres. I nominate and appoint Raleigh Boatright guardian for my above named grandchildren provided he will give bond and security to the Court of Ordinary in Washington Co. for faithful performance, when my grandchildren shall arrive at age. If he fails to act as guardian, I appoint Elam Dudley to act as guardian for them. The balance of my lands in Washington Co. to be sold and proceeds equally divided between all my heirs. To my son Willis, the west half of lot #33. To my son, Mack, Jr., lot #51, and the east half of lot #33. Also I give him the 10 and 12 ft. rooms in my new house, and the balance of the house at the death of his mother, and 1 bed & furniture. To my 4 Childs, Mary, Harty, Harriet, & Francis, the east half of lot #28, the north half of lot #50, lot #49, with the run of Richland Creek as high up as the fork. All the lands before designated lie in the 24th District of originally Muscogee, now Talbot Co., except the lands mentioned in Washington Co. To my son WILLIS, $200, out of my estate, as a compensation for his taking care of a helpless negro man by the name of Cupik. To my Child Francis, one feather bed & furniture and $45. The balance of my negroes should be equally divided without sale between my 6 surviving children so that all may share alike, taking into consideration what each has heretofore had, as some have received more than others heretofore.

James, son of George and Zilpha (Roebuck) Boatwright, was born in Washington County, Georgia, December 23, 1808. He died in Pike County, Alabama, February 3, 1873.

James married in Washington County about 1826, Sarah Hunt, a daughter of Thomas and Frances (Ballard) Hunt of Washington County. Sarah was born December 2, 1808. She died August 28, 1878. These dates are from their bibles.

She was born 20 Apr 1826 in Tennille, Washington County, Georgia, and died 12 Jul 1896 in Tennille, Washington County, Georgia.

Notes for GEORGE EARL BOATWRIGHT:

It has been hard to prove the children of George and Zilpha (Roebuck) Boatwright, however, George E. Boatwright was certainly one of their sons. He was born in Washington County, Georgia in about 1813 and he died there in 1858.

On August 29, 1843, George E. Boatwright Jr. of Washington County, gave a power of attorney to James Boatwright of Dooly County, for the purpose of conveying a parcel of land in Pulaski County, Georgia. The deed said, "George Boatwright Moving." On September 14, 1844, George sold land in the 4th District, Lot 60 and part of Lot 61, containing 300 acres, to George Turner of Pulaski. The transaction was made by James Boatwright, Attorney.

George and Elizabeth Sessions married in Washington County, July 8, 1841. She was born in Georgia about 1826 and she survived her husband. George did not move from Washington County. He was enumerated on the 1850 census in that place, and his widow was still there in 1860. The inventory of his entire estate was taken December 15, 1858. Joseph M. Sessions was an appraiser.

7-297. ZILPHA ANN BOATWRIGHT (GEORGE EARL3, AMBROSE2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 1820 in Washington County, Georgia. She died 1856 in Washington County, Georgia. She married JEPTHA BRANTLEY, 13 Sep 1838 in Washington County, Georgia. He was born 1810 in Washington County, Georgia, and died 19 May 1856 in Washington County, Georgia.

Notes for ZILPHA ANN BOATWRIGHT:

It has been difficult to prove the children of George and Zilpha (Roebuck) Boatwright due to lost records in Washington County, Georgia. Neverless, Zilpha Boatwright, who married in Washington County, September 13, 1838, certainly appears to be their daughter.

She and Jeptha Brantly were married on the above date. They continued to live in Washington County where Jeptha was a successful planter. On the 1850 census, he reported his land holdings to the value of $8,000.

Prior to 1860, Jeptha apparently died. Zilpha Brantley was head of household in his place on the 1860 census. She and her children were enumerated. Her land was valued at $6,600, and she had personal property valued at $2,900 which probably included a number of negroes.
