Notes for ANDREW DRURY BOATWRIGHT:

Andrew Drury Boatwright Gravestone

For years it was thought that Drury Boatwright died about 1838. After his death, his widow Levicia Thurman Boatwright married Obadiah Gulledge. The 1838 death date was based on this newspaper notice1 found in “Miscellaneous Abstracts from Pre-Civil War Cheraw, South Carolina Newspapers” by James C. Pigg:

SHERIFF’S SALES By order of the Court of Ordinary, will be sold on the first Monday in December next at Chesterfield Court House, within the legal hours of sale, all the real Estate of Drewry Boatright deceased, lying on Jemmie’s Creek and Abram’s Creek, containing eight hundred and sixty nine acres, more or less.

Terms--As much cash as will defray the expenses of the sale will be required on the day of sale. --For the balance, one half payable the first day of January 1840 and the other half on the first day of January 1841 with interest from day of sale. Purchasers to give Bond and good security and a mortgage on the premises (if required) to the Ordinary to secure the purchase money, and pay for all necessary papers.

AM. LOWRY, Sheriff C.D.
Nov. 19, 1838.
Nov. 28, 1838

During he past week I found new information that requires this 1838 death year to be adjusted to an earlier date.

On October 23, 1832, the South Carolina House of Representative met in Columbia, South Carolina.2

The House after concurring on a bill introduced by Mr. Preston, Special Joint Committee, voted on resolutions appointing mangers of elections districts.

The following are comments from the house meeting:

Senate-House Meeting Oct 1832

In Chesterfield, at Blakeley’s Store, John W. Hudson, vice Murdoch Ray, removed; At Archibald Johnson’s, Hector M’Neil, vice Drury Boatwright, deceased;….

Based on these House & Senate minutes from the 23-24 October 1832, session we know that Drury Boatwright died before this date. We are still missing an EXACT date for his death. We also know that he was alive at the enumeration of the 1830 Census.3 The official enumeration day of the 1830 census was June 1, 1830.

Notes for LEVICIA THURMAN:

Levicia Thurman Boatwright Gulledge Gravestone

Information provided by researcher, Charles Purvis, who cites the widow's pension record for Levicia's second husband, Obediah Gulledge (although I don't have this record myself). This is also supported by the 1850 census (Roll M432-851, page 127b, 452/452, Chesterfield Co. SC) which shows Thomas and Artimecia in the same household as Obediah and Levicia Gulledge. A third source further supports the fact that Levicia was a widow: "Miscellaneous Abstracts from Pre-Civil War Cheraw, South Carolina Newspapers" by James C. Pigg, 1996, Page 25, which describes the "Sheriff's Sale" of the estate of "Drewry Boatright" in Nov 1838. Source: Ken Norman

Notes for LEWIS BOATWRIGHT:

DEATH: #94 Index and Genealogical Abstracts of the Chesterfield District Court of Common Pleas, Equity Side, 1823-1869, page 130 as recorded in "Cheraw/Chesterfield District Wills, 1750-1865 & Abstracts from the Court of Common Pleas 1823-1869, Published by James C. Pigg, Copyright 1995. Bill of Complaint, Smith vs Boatwright. Copy on file(1-2-12).

[#94] Smith, E.B. Adm. & others vs. Elizabeth Boatwright & others - Bill for partition & c 1864

Lewis Boatwright died intestate 7 March 1863, leaving his widow, Elizabeth [Rebecca] [Davis] Boatwright and children: George R. Boatwright; Louisa Ann intermarried with Duncan Teal; Lucinda Boatwright; and grandchildren: William B. Davis, Elizabeth J. Davis and George R. Davis, the children of a deceased daughter, Elizabeth, intermarried with C. Washington Davis; Catherine J. Davis, Lewis Davis, Margaret Davis and Mary E. Davis, children of a deceased daughter, Mary the 2nd wife of C. Washington Davis; and William Boatwright, Calvin Boatwright, Isaac Boatwright, Nancy Boatwright, and Lucinda Boatwright, the children of a deceased son Samuel Boatwright.

His wife was ELIZABETH REBECCA DAVIS daughter of Thomas Davis & Nancy Rivers.

TWO LAND DEEDS on file in the Chesterfield County Courthouse proves without a doubt that she signed her name as Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright.

Land Deed - James T. Talton to Elizabeth [Rebecca] Boatwright dated 6 July 1868 states that the land being transferred formerly belonged to the Estate of Lewis Boatwright, deceased. Elizabeth [Rebecca] Boatwright. [Chesterfield County, South Carolina, Register of Deeds, Book #1, Page 280].

Land Deed - Lewis Boatwright to Samuel Boatwright dated 15 April 1854 states that he Lewis Boatwright "do grant bargain sell and release unto my Son Samuel". Transfer of 250 acres for the sum of $250.00. States that Elizabeth R. Boatwright the wife of the within named Lewis Boatwright did appear this 10 day January 1866. Elizabeth Rebecca [Davis] Boatwright relinquishes her rights of dower. Harry Alexander Davis in his book "The Davis of Wales and America", page 55 has her name recorded as Margaret Elizabeth Davis. Yet, in this land deed she states that her name is Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright.[Chesterfield County, South Carolina, Register of Deeds, Book #1, Page 47-48].
