Notes for LEVI BOATRIGHT:

THOMAS BOATRIGHT camped on New Year Creek some four or five miles North of the town of Brenham, as it is today, with the ALCORNS, McNEESES and the ABNER KUYKENDALLS. Thomas Boatwright, F. Boatwright, H. Boatwright and Richard Boatwright were all tax payers of Washington County on the first list in 1837. ELIZABETH BOATWRIGHT, believed to have been daughter of THOMAS BOATRIGHT, was married to W. T. CHARLES in Washington County in 1838, and LEVY BOATRIGHT was married to DICEY LAWRENCE in the same county on May 25, 1840, [NOTE: In this same publication, pg. 143, the marriage information is given as follows: Dicey Lawrence married Levi Boatwright on January 25, 1840].

In the above, the Thomas Boatright who camped on New Year Creek is not the same Thomas as the later-mentioned Thomas Boatwright. This latter Thomas is brother to the F. [Friend] Boatright mentioned above as well as brother to Richard Boatright also mentioned above. "H. Boatright" is unknown, but most likey another brother. Elizabeth Boatright is the daughter of Friend Boatright, not Thomas (per Joyce Boatright McKelroy family group sheets..... see that source referenced under Elizabeth Boatright).

Warren Lyons Historic Marker Text of Historic Marker: James Lyons (B.1778) brought his family to Texas from New York in 1820. While working outside his cabin near this site on Oct. 15, 1837, Lyons was killed by comanches. His was the first grave in this family cemetery. Notes for HENRY BOATRIGHT:

Henry apparently got into an altercation with a friend named David Blundell, while both were drinking. Henry killed Blundell and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. His family and friends petitioned the Governor, Sam Houston, for a parden, which he granted on March 3, 1860.

The State of Texas Executive Department

Whereas, at the Spring Term of the District Court of the County of Lavaca and State aforesaid, for the year of 1860 one Henry Boatright was convicted of "an assault with intent to murder" upon the body of one David Blundell, and was sentenced therefore to two years imprisonment in the State Penitentiary; and whereas, it has been represented and made known to me that at the time said Boatright committed the act for which he had been convicted and sentenced, was under the influence of liquor. That the difficulty was not founded in any ill feelings or malice towards the said Blundell - they having heretofore been good friends; and whereas many good citizens of Lavaca and other counties, have petitioned the Executive to pardon the said Boatright.

Now therefore, I, Sam Houston, Govenor of the State of Texas, by virture of the power vested in me by the constitution and laws thereof hereby grant to the said Henry Boatright a free and full pardon for the offence for which he was convicted and hereby direct any and all offences charged with the custody of said Boatright, to release and discharge him from any further custody or confinement on account of said sentenced.

Given under my hand and the Seal of the State of Texas affixed thereunto at the city of Austin, this 3rd day of March 1860 and in the year of the independence of Texas the twenty-fifth.

By the Govenor

John L. Boatright
Private, Company A
21st Texas Infantry, CSA
By Leland Carter
P.O. Box 162
Fruitvale, TX 75127

John L. Boatright, my 2nd paternal Great-Grandfather, was born on 5 Mar 1831 (Information source: CSA Pension File # 2877) in Miller County, Arkansas. John L. Boatright was the son of Friend and Lydia (Sparks) Boatright. John was only 2 years of age when he arrived in Texas with his parents in 1833.

Information Sources: Stephen F. Austin's Registry of First Families, p. 136 documents Friend Boatright and his wife, Lydia, arriving in Texas in 1833, from Miller County, Arkansas, with 7 of their children. One of the sons was John L. Boatright. His father, Friend Boatright's age at that time was 32, indicating he was born about 1801. His mother, Lydia Boatright's age at that time was 25, indicating she was born about 1808.

The 1850 Lavaca County, TX Census documents Lydia, a widow and head of household, with her children. Washington County Deeds document Friend Boatright in land transactions in 1848. This indicates Friend Boatright's date of death was between 1848-1850.

The 1880 Llano County, TX Census documents Lydia Boatright was born in Illinois. John L. Boatright enlisted in Parker County, TX. on 6 May 1862, as Private, in Company A, 21st Regiment, Texas Volunteer Infantry under Col. W. H. Griffin.

John L. Boatright Plaque located at grave site

He died of "failing health" on October 27, 1890, (Information source: CSA Pension # 2877) in Williamson County TX, and was buried in the Pond Springs Cemetery in Williamson County, TX, as documented in Williamson County Cemetery Records. The exact grave site was documented prior to the tombstone disappearing. The cemetery is a very "endangered species", being only a few hundred feet from a very busy intersection, and a Walmart parking lot. We plan a CSA Tombstone dedication in the Fall of 2000.

He married March 02, 1854 in Lavaca County, TX to Rebecca Cole (see marriage license). Rebecca was born in 1838 in Iowa and died November 30, 1903, probably in Oklahoma. Place of her burial is unknown. (Information source: TX Marriage Record.)

East Texas Historical Journal., Volume IX, No 2, October 1971 documents the 21st Texas Infantry was stationed at Sabine Pass August 31, 1863, one week before the Battle of Sabine Pass, under Griffin's Battalion. This battalion consisted primarily of seasoned frontiersmen who were known as "sharp-shooters". During the week before the battle, the unit fortified and secured Sabine's defenses.

Also documented in the referenced journal: The unit saw action on the Calcasieu River in Louisiana.

Also documented in the referenced journal: The unit was also stationed at Brownsville Texas and fought in the last battle of the Civil War at Palmito Ranch on May 13, 1865, (news of Lee's surrender had not arrived in South TX) and were among the last Confederate unit to lower the Rebel Flag on May 20, 1865.

John L. Boatright Plaque placed by Leland Carter (This photo made at Pond Springs Cemetery in Williamson County TX. Leland Carter had just installed a CSA Tombstone and OTH Memorial Marker for JOHN L. BOATWRIGHT. The grave of John's son, Spencer, is to the left of the photo.)

During John L. Boatright's service in the CSA, his wife and children are documented in THE CONFEDERATE INDIGENT FAMILIES LISTS OF TEXAS, as having received aide in February 23, 1865.

After the Civil War, although in failing health and poor eyesight, John L. Boatright farmed several hundred acres in Llano County TX, until a few years before his death.

His widow received Confederate Pension #2827 registered in the County of Llano in the State of Texas.

John L. Boatright was a grandson of Thomas and Amy Boatright. Thomas and Amy Boatright and their oldest children, first arrived at Stephen F. Austin's Spanish Land Grant on December 31, 1821. They camped beside a stream, now known as "New Year Creek" to commemorate their crossing. They were in the first fifteen of the original 300 colonist who helped Stephen F. Austin to colonize Austin's First Colony, for which The Texas State Genealogical Society awarded certificate # 550 "Descendant's of Austin's Old Three Hundred" in their name.

The Texas State Genealogical Society awarded certificate # 4815, designating John L. Boatright as a Texas First Family, who resided or served The Republic of Texas before February 19, 1846 when the Republic of Texas officially became The State of Texas.

The Texas Office of Commissioner of Claims # 182 certifies a Land Bounty of 640 acres was issued to John L. Boatright for his services in the Army of The Republic of Texas, service unspecified.

Private John L. Boatright served in Sutton's Company, Bell's Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers during the Mexican War 1846-1848. He received Pension # C20329 October 23, 1889, and a Land Warrant for his services in the Mexican War. His Mexican War Pension records describe his physical appearance as 5'9", dark complexion, black hair and gray eyes.

Notes for JOHN BOATWRIGHT:

Information submitted September 2006, by Kay Clerc-Fakhar, Jacksonville, FL. (MehdiFakhar@aol.com). Any additions or changes made by others to her information should be documented accordingly. Please always include this reference when using or sharing the information.

The only other John Boatwright found in Iron County is the son of Thomas & Rebecca Boatright, who was born approx 1868, and was too young to be the John Boatwright in this obit. Based on this obit, it seems that William Boatright, b. 1814 IL, died between the 1870 census and April 1871, but I have not yet located his death information.

Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, April 6, 1871, Page 3.

Suicide--On last Saturday a young man named JOHN BOATWRIGHT committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart. For some time past he had been threatening to perpetrate the act which we are chronicling, and on one or two occasions endeavored ineffectually to procure poison from Dr. Haller, who, suspecting his intentions, refused him. On last Saturday morning, young Boatwright took a rifle and went out to an old farm, about 2 miles west of Pilot Knob formerly occupied by the Boatwright family, but now inhabited by an old man engaged in hauling wood for the Pilot Knob Company. Entering the unoccupied house, he placed the breech of the rifle upon the floor, with the muzzle to his left breast, and discharged the gun by touching the trigger with the ramrod. When discovered, in the afternoon, he was lying upon his face, with the ramrod upon one side of him, and the rifle on the other. Such are the facts as presented before the coroner's jury which sat upon his body on Saturday evening. The causes which led to the rash act are, dissipation and disappointment in some love affair. The deceased leaves a mother and two sisters, who reside at Pilot Knob.

Catharina, b. 1869 has not been found since the 1870 Iron Census. Perhaps she and her mother died about the same time?

This would have been the church of John and Mary:
Flat River, Mo., May 12, 1936.
Lead Belt News, Flat River, Mo.
The first church in Flat River, Free Will Baptist, was organized in 1891,
with fifteen members.

Some early members were Wade Adams, Joe Perry, L. L. Doe, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hicks, Mr.
and Mrs. William Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Turley, John Dosing, and Mrs. Crump.

John Dosing lived in a 2 log cabin on top of Blue Goose Hill. At that time, there were only 3 log cabins in the area. (Blue Goose Hill, Crawley Bottom and one on the south end of what became Main street in Flat River.) Blue Goose Hill isn't an official name, but rather a nickname for the portion of West Main Street which goes up and over the hill on the way out to Highway 8 which goes to Leadwood. Many years ago, there was a wild and rowdy tavern up on the hill overlooking Flat River (before there were many houses), called the Blue Goose Saloon.
