The Madison County Record
Huntsville, Arkansas
17 Jan 1929
Mrs. Ann Boatright, wife of H. C. Boatright of Aurora, was fatally burned yesterday when her clothing caught fire from an open fireplace in her home, death resulting this morning, about twenty-four hours after the deplorable accident. Interment will be made tomorrow in the Aurora Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Boatright, both past 80 years of age, lived alone and were finishing their breakfast when the latter went from the kitchen into the living room and soon was heard screaming for help. Her husband ran to her as quickly as possible and found her clothing all aflame; he threw a bucket of water on her and then finished smothering out the flames with his hands, but not before the unfortunate old lady's body had been so badly burned that she never regained consciousness fully enough to tell how it all happened. One theory is that she may have fainted and fallen in the fire, while another is that possibly her skirts were drawn into it as she stood before or passed by the fireplace.
Mr. Boatright's hands and arms were severely burned in his efforts to extinguish his wife's blazing garments.
The Boatright's were among the pioneer settlers of this part of Arkansas and had resided many years at Aurora, where Mr. Boatright worked as a blacksmith. Mrs. Boatright was a daughter of "Uncle Bobbie" Lee, one of the grand old men of this county in its early days and who was said to have been a close lineal descendant of General Robert E. Lee. Besides her husband she is survived by the following children: Robert Boatright of Johnson, Mrs. William Peters of Morris, Okla., Ed Boatright of Braggs, Okla., and Walter Boatright of Aurora.

Notes for WILLIAM TURNER HARWOOD:
William Turner Harwood's date of birth is uncertain. His obituary indicates that he was 70 years of age when he died in 1897. This would make his date of birth 1826-1827. According to a cemetery survey by Peggy Rogers, his tombstone gives no date of birth and reads, "Died February 14, 1897; Age 72 years." If this is correct, his date of birth would be 1825-1826. - Source: David C. Rains
OBITUARY
William Turner HARWOOD - Fort Smith Elevator. (died Feb 14 1897]
Mr. William T. Harwood, father of our townsman, Mr. J. B. Harwood, died at his home near Huntsville, Madison County, Arkansas, on the 15th ult., aged seventy years. His funeral took place on the 16th and was largely attended.
Mr. Harwood was a native of Virginia. At a very early age he went to Tennessee with his parents, where he lived until the breaking out of the Civil war, when he settled in Madison County, where he lived until the day of his death.
In Madison County Mr. Harwood was recognized as a live, progressive, up-to-date farmer, and through his admiration for fine stock the wealth of Madison County was largely increased. He introduced into Madison County some of the finest breeds of stock, and some of his horses sold for large figures. Mr. Harwood was a veteran of the Mexican war. He enlisted at the first call for volunteers and served until the war closed. He took service in a Tennessee regiment and was assigned to cavalry service, in which he did some very active work. He served under both Generals Scott and Taylor and took part in the battles of Vera Cruz, Chepultepec, Cherubusco, Buena Vista, Monterey and Cerro Gordo. He also participated in a number of other engagements which are not recorded in history.
Madison County papers speak in the highest terms of Mr. Harwood.

Letter from Lewis Sanford Stamps to his uncle John Sanford Stamps:
Osage, Ark.
March 23, 1873
Dear Uncle John:
I received your kind letter dated Feb. 28 and was glad to hear from you and that you and as many of your family is living as what there is. Uncle, your few lines found us all well and I earnestly hope these few lines may find you and yours enjoying the same like blessing. Uncle, I have nothing of interest to communicate more than I received a letter from Tenn the same day I rec'd yours from cousin Lewis Bohanan. Our relatives and friends are all well in that country.
Uncle, you wanted to know how my father was treated by the Federals, bad enough I guess as they never was known to do any other way - nigh starved him to death so I expect they served father the same way. I was lucky enough, thank God, to never fall into their hands. I think I shall visit you this fall seeing my relatives in Tenn puts me in the notion to see some more of my kinfolks. I have come to the conclusion they are generally a pretty damned cliver (sic) set. We have fine water and tolerable health but mountainous and ruff (sic). Our state affairs is in a hell of a fix. When we elect good men the damned radicals will throw them out of office. The Democrats in this country are too negligent about going to elections.
You wanted to know our names. I now proceed to give you them. My eldest sister Mary Ann, she died in 63, left three children. She married a man by the name of Marion Miller and he was such a rascal during the war that some man shot and killed him two years ago. James K., the eldest is living at home with us. Lewis Sanford, myself, is with mother when I am not rambling about the country; Leah, the fourth, married a man by the name of William Phillips; died in 63, left a little girl; Nancy June, the fifth, married a man by the name of Bunch and is living about a mile or so from us. Wanda Elizabeth, the sixth, she is married to a man by the name of Johnson and lives in the neighborhood of where we do. John Preston Stamps my youngest brother, he is at home and writing a letter at this time to Tenn. Margaret Isabells she is at home with me. Julia Tennessee, the baby is 13 years of age and about as large as any of them.
Uncle, you wanted to know how many children Aunt Polly Roberson left; she left six. Three of them is in Tennessee; Laviser, Polly Ann and Leah; Nancy and Jane and Winfield Scott Roberson is living in this country. Uncle William was killed by some thieves in the time of the war. The other Roberson boy lives on the Calfkiller yet. Aunt Polly Prior is dead and Uncle Jonathan, both their children lives in Bates County, Missouri. With much respect I subscribe myself your affectionate nephew and friend until death.

He came with his parents to Newton Co, AR in 1841 and was always an honest tiller of the soil. During the early part of the war he was elected Captain of a company of State Troops, and he soon after organized a company of Confederate Troops, wand was choosen Captain, and was a participant in many hotly contested battles. He was a Democrat, a Mason, and a member of the Baptist Church.
His wife was born in TN May 8, 1835 and moved with her parents to IL and afterwards to Franklin Co., AR. She is still living, the wife of J. C. Reeves and resides on the old homestead in Newton Co., AR. She and Capt. Bunch became the parents of 5 children: Stillman B. b. Aug. 27, 1853, Joel N. b. 4-21-1856, Clarissa (Kay) wife of John P. Notes for JOHN THOMAS BOATRIGHT:
My Memories of my Maternal Grandparents
John Thomas Boatright and Ingober Byrd Smith
By Lucie Dean Patton
May 1985
Foreward:
For a number of years I have planned to write a story of my four grandparents to put into my own life history. Now it appears to be not only appropriate, but urgent.
At this time I am 73 years old. I have the honor of being the oldest granddaughter. My brother, Fred Harbert, and cousin, Carl Boatright, were their two oldest grandchildren. They are both deceased. While many of my childhood and youthful memories are still tucked away in fairly good condition I shall be happy to share them with the many descendents of my beloved Grandpa and Grandma Boatright. How I wish I could remember more to record for my own posterity.
Things I write will be from my own memories, family histories, my own feelings, my
personal observations, my personal opinions and stories my mother told me. I am thankful
and proud to be among the numerous posterity of John and Byrd (Bird) Boatright.
Submitted by Larry Calvin.
John Thomas Boatright was born 9 January, 1858 at Osage, in Carroll County, Arkansas. His father, William Boatright, Jr. was born in Granger County, Tennessee, in 1814, his mother, Martha Jane Fancher, was born in Overton County, Tennessee in 1825. According to my search, the Boatrights came from England. The Fanchers were French.
Let not your minds be boggled by the spelling of “Boatright”. The original spelling (was) “Wright”. Perhaps some recorder just got in a hurry away back when and decided to drop the “W”.
Grandpa was the fifth of eight children. His brothers were James Polk, Robert Dixon, and William Amos (real southern names). His sisters were Arminta Bobo, whom they called Aunt Minty, Amanda Jane, who was called Mandy Stamps, Elizabeth Bunch, who was not nicknamed; then there was Grandpa’s baby sister, Mattie Bell Ray. She was known as Aunt Matt.
My mother was the oldest child, Kate Boatright. Later I’ll tell you how she got her name.
One of my earliest memories of Grandpa’s visits to our home in Green Forest, Arkansas, was when he would talk to my mother about his brothers and sisters. He seemed to love them all very much, and expressed an interest in the welfare of each one of them. Despite difficult modes of transportation and communication, he managed to keep in touch with them. In those days families didn’t scatter like in our present time. I can remember that Grandpa rode horseback or he and Grandma took trips with the horses and buggy to visit their relatives. Grandpa seemed to be very fond of his youngest sister, Mattie Ray. Grandpa somehow transmitted this love of family to Mamma.
I can barely remember when my Daddy and Mamma took Fred, Ruby Jane and me to see our Great-Aunt Margaret Bunch, in Kingston, Arkansas. When I was a little older, Grandpa was delighted that I enjoyed visiting his two younger brothers, my Great-Uncle Bill in Huntsville and Great-Uncle Bob in Berryville, Arkansas. They were good, honest, hardworking, stalwart people.
Stories of Grandpa’s Childhood that I have heard:
He as a big, tall boy for his age. One time when he attended church with his parents (he was four or five years old) the older children tried to get him to leave his mother’s side to sit with them. After some coaxing little John clung even tighter to his mother’s long, flowing skirts in her church pew. When an older child inquired of little John, “Why don’t you come and sit with us?” The little lanky boy replied, “I want to sit by Ma, so I can suck.” Evidently in those ancient days breast feeding was a lingering, satisfying custom.
Grandpa used to tell me some of his memories of the Civil War. He was a young child, perhaps six or seven; his family lived on a farm at Osage. He could remember how those damned Yankees came to their home and stole their home-cured hams and bacon, or any thing they could get their hands on to eat and take with them. He told how the Yankees burned people’s homes, their smokehouses and left paths of destruction. I’m sure the horrible memories of the Civil War remained with Grandpa all his life.
I have no recollection of hearing Grandpa mention anything about going to school. In those days educational opportunities were very poor for rural children of southern states. However, I’m of the opinion that our Grandfather Boatright’s knowledge of farm management would surpass the skills of many experts in this era of modern times.
My knowledge of Grandpa’s youth and courting days is zero. But I can imagine he was a very tall, straight, handsome young man, with dark, wavy hair, a striking, well trimmed black mustache and beautiful brown eyes that would melt the heart of many of those young Osages maidens.
Mamma was told by her mother a few things about their brief courtship and marriage. According to our Grandma Boatright, she was his second choice for a bride. Therein lies a bit of mystery. Do you wonder as I often have if Grandma was really happy? I think she was. She was so lovable! Grandpa was known to have been in love with Grandma’s older sister, Nancy Sue Smith. Shortly before their marriage, Nancy Sue took a fever and died. It is said that Grandpa’s grief for his sweetheart left an indelible mark of sadness on his heart forever. From what mama was able to piece together Grandpa made further visits to the Smith home, seeking hope and comfort for his grievous loss. In time the wounded lover began to notice that Nancy Sue’s little sister, Byrd, had suddenly grown up to be a very pretty girl. She must have charmed him with her big blue eyes, her sweet smile, her girlish giggles and good natured disposition.
Early marriages for girls were not unusual in those century-ago days. Grandma was 15 and Grandpa was 23 when they were married 2 October 1881 at Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas.
My grandmother, Ingober Byrd Smith, the daughter of Joseph Smith and Ingober Poteet, was born at Osage, Carroll County, Arkansas, on 9 May 1866. She was the fifth of six children. Her oldest sister, Rachel Jane, married Spencer Morris. Their son, Tom, was the sheriff of Carroll County, Arkansas. His son, Tom Morris, Jr., served as postmaster for many years at Berryville, and is a prominent citizen there today. Grandma’s brother Thomas Smith was a twin to her sister Jane. He lived to be 14. Grandma showed her love and devotion to her brother by naming one of her baby boys for him, Thomas Carl Boatright.
Mary Ella, an older sister of Grandma’s, married James Fancher, who was Grandpa’s first cousin. Therefore, those sisters became cousins and their children became double cousins. I can remember Great-Aunt “Ellie” Fancher visiting in our home, in Green Forest, when I was a little girl. She and Grandma had a great love for one another. Aunt Ellie raised a big family and has a long line of descendents. I’m sure our relatives are numerous as the sands of the sea.
Grandma’s older sister, Nancy Sue, has been mentioned previously. It was she who had planned to marry Grandpa when her early death terminated their courtship. Grandma cherished her dearly, so dearly that she named one of her baby girls for her, my aunt Janie Sue Dennis.
Grandma’s youngest brother was William Booker Smith. She named her first son for him, my uncle Booker Boatright. I can remember Great-Uncle Booker coming to visit Grandma. He and Aunt Ida (Wilson) lived in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma. They came to visit us in Green Forest when I was 10 or 12 years old. How he and Grandma laughed and talked and loved one another! Grandma adored that brother and made a big fuss over him.
Mama could remember her Grandpa and Grandma Smith. She told me a few things about their lives. My Great-Grandfather, Joseph Smith, Jr., was born in Orange County, North Carolina, in 1831. His wife was Ingobar Byrd Poteet, who was born in Overton County, Tennessee in 1835. Their children were all born in Carroll County, Arkansas.
My Great Grandfather, Joseph Smith, went to California during the gold rush. He worked hard, saved his money, went back home and bought two farms at Osage. He married his sweet, little, neat Poteet. Can you read between the lines with me as I picture that brave, strong, young man going out to California, perhaps in a covered wagon with other gold seekers, enduring many dangers and hardships of the wild, untamed, unsettled West. What strength and courage, thrift and perseverance it must have taken for that young man to work diligently and save sufficient money to return to Arkansas to buy land. Wouldn’t it be a great to meet him and give him a big hug!
I’d like to thank our dear Great Grandfather Smith for living a good life in his youth. I’m thankful that he didn’t fall into the evil temptations that existed in the gold rush stampede such as drinking, gambling and buying wild women. I feel sure he was a God-fearing man who lived a good, clean Christian Life.
Often as we travel to some of the California Gold Rush historical towns I wonder – was he in Coloma, Columbia, Angels Camp, or Sonora? Why didn’t we ask more questions in our youth about our ancestors?
Great Grandfather Joseph Smith was sufficiently wealthy to own Negro slaves. I love this story! When Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves there was a great emotional upheaval in the South. Many slaves rejoiced over their long-awaited freedom as was anticipated. Feelings were just the opposite when my Great-Grandfather proclaimed the good news to his slaves. They broke into tears and wept with sadness. No way did they want to leave our kind great-grandparents. The slaves had been treated with love and kindness by the Smiths. They begged our Great-Grandfather to continue living on his farm. That wish he graciously granted. When a marvelous example of Christ-like living he set for all of us, his posterity.
When I taught school I always told that true story on Lincoln’s birthday. It was a real-life story the textbooks always omitted.
I didn’t hear too much about Great-Grandmother Smith, except a few things mama told me. The name, Poteet, is interesting. It is French. There are Poteets in Livingston, Tennessee. One of them has a drugstore there (we saw it in 1972). He could be related. There is a town in Texas named “Poteet”. Herb Poteet of Rupert, Idaho, thinks we are from the same ancestral line.
Granny’s Negro Mammy
Grandma’s parents were slave owners. One of the Negro women had a baby about the age of my grandmother. Due to an illness, Grandma’s mother became unable to breast-feed her. The kind Negro woman then let little baby Byrd nurse her until her own mother was well enough to resume nursing. Little wonder there was a great bond of love between my great-grandparents and their slaves. Grandma found it easy to love her “Negro Mammy”.
The Crooked Finger
Mamma had in her possession a photograph of her grandmother Smith. The dignified matron posed sitting in a straight chair, holding her folded hands on her lap. Her middle finger on her right hand was very crooked. As a little girl I was curious as could be! Mama carefully informed me every time I looked at the old pictures. Her grandmother was out gathering eggs in the hen house late one afternoon. She put her hand in a nest located within her reach, but perched higher than she could see. A horrible snake was coiled in the nest and bit that sweet little lady on the finger. First aid was applied quickly by an old fashioned method. Her husband grabbed up a chicken. The snake-bitten victim thrust her hand inside the warm chicken for relief of the pain. The treatment also served to draw out the poison from the snakebite. She recovered, but always carried the reminder on her crooked finger.
The Boatright Home
My Grandpa and Grandma Boatright’s home made a lasting and favorable impression on me. The home I remember was the place where most of their children were born. They lived near Grandma’s parents when Mamma and the first few children were born.
Grandma was very young when she got married, and started having babies. Mamma got to stay with her maternal grandparents a lot when she was little. Her Grandpa disliked her name so much that he changed it from Stella Grey to “Kate”. She went by Kate all her life. In a joking way her Grandpa told people, “My old hound dog, Kate, has a prettier name than that little baby girl,” So he named her Kate, which was just right for her. My Grandma Boatright was so happy over one little granddaughter named for my mamma. She was known for a long time as “Little Kate”. Now she is Kate Walker, one of my favorite cousins. She and her husband, Uel, reside in Rupert, Idaho, at this time (1985).
Grandma loved babies! She had sixteen all together! Some of the family members told me she had seventeen and the last one was stillborn, or died at birth. She had two sets of twins. The first pair was named Charlie Fay and Maudie May. The little girl only lived a short time. The next set of twins was named Earl and Pearl. As an added note of interest, twins have been born to some of my cousins, the third generation. My cousins, Josephine and Vinnie Pearl, had twins. Aunt Pearl Thompson has three (triplets) great-granddaughters in Houston, Texas. Are there any other triplets or twins in this line of John and Byrd Boatright’s descendants?
Visiting my grandparents when I was a child was usually fun and exciting. Aunt Sue and Aunt Anna Lee were the two youngest children, only a few years older than I. They are both still living (1985).
Grandma had borne all her big family by the time I knew her. She was failing in health by then. She became old and worn out even before she reached middle age.
Grandma’s Lap
Grandma as I recall was rather short is stature and was plump and round. She had big blue eyes, a double chin, a long nose, and light brown hair that she rolled up and pinned on top of her head. Her fat tummy left a little bitty lap when she sat down. That little narrow lap was a choice place to sit and be held and loved and petted. Grandma was warm, gentle and bestowed affection abundantly. I can’t remember her ever scolding or fussing at the little children. She was quiet and soft spoken. Apparently she was extremely patient in dealing with her family. I’m sure she endured many hardships, pain and sadness. Her hands were so busy with children I don’t think she had much time for sewing, knitting or crocheting, etc. She was a good homemaker for their big two-story house was always clean.
There was the most delicious smell that fascinated my early day senses. Isn’t it funny how certain scents return our memories? At Granny Boatright’s house there were smells of fried ham, spicy dried apples, sassafras tea, hickory smoke coffee beans, liniment and coal oil. When the big Sunday dinners were served, many more tantalizing odors permeated the house.
Over their fireplace mantel, in the living room, hung the big picture frame that displayed baby pictures of the grandchildren. It was one of Grandma’s prized possessions.
I can remember seeing calendars on the walls. Also they had colored pictures, unframed, pinned on the walls in the living room.
Those pictures were about the size of a place mat, made of slick, shiny paper. The pictures came as a free gift with the purchase of a flat, round tin box of Cloverline salve. It was a common practice in those days to take orders for Cloverline salve, dishes and garden seed. Usually this door-to-door sales work was done in the early spring by young women and girls. It also provided an opportunity to visit with neighbors. Other traveling salesman were men who drove sort of closed-in buggies, or hacks, who called on the rural homemakers selling spices, salves, ointments and food flavorings. Every household welcomed this Watkins man and the Raleigh man with their wares. Grandma was one of their best customers.
Grandma and Grandpa lived in a big, two-story house on a 160 acre creek bottom farm. To my childish eyes their house was a beautiful sight to behold. Their home was on Osage Creek, located eight miles south of Berryville, Arkansas. They were in the Snow School District.
The big two-story house had a big kitchen, a big living room, and a big screened-in back porch. A big breezeway was between the living room and the big parlor. The living room also served as a bedroom. There were usually two big feather beds and several chairs in the living room. The long front porch was high off the ground on one end. It was made safer and more attractive with banisters and railings around it.
The second story had two big bedrooms and an unfinished room called the attic. There was a big front porch upstairs with banisters and railings around it. I can remember playing in the attic with Aunt Sue and Aunt Anna Lee. It was somewhat a mysterious place to me. There was an old sewing machine in the attic and old clothes.
The parlor was the show place of this beautiful southern colonial style home. A brightly flowered rug covered the floor. White lace curtains hung over the windows. A beautiful, tall organ stood like an elegant monument in one corner. There were one or two feather beds in the parlor and a dresser. Four pictures of my Great-Grandparents, in lavish, ornate frames, held a permanent place on the walls of the parlor. The large kitchen with unfinished board floors had a large dining table, two large cabinets and a huge cook stove. Grandma must have been a good cook as all of her daughters were excellent cooks. The big, wood-burning cook stove was a “Home Comfort”, the best on the market. It was equipped with a closed compartment at the upper back part of the stove and it was called a warming closet. Another added convenience was the hot-water reservoir attached to the side of the big stove. If we had a nickel for every biscuit baked in that old oven we’d be rich. Grandpa had to have hot biscuits, gravy and meat every day.
A red brick building stood a few steps behind the back porch. It had a concrete floor and no windows in it. That compact little building had shelves from top to bottom all around to store the jars of home canned fruit. A long table held earthen crocks filled with fresh milk, and crème. Homemade butter, cottage cheese and fresh eggs were stored in this building. It was called the “milk house”. Most farm homes were not so well-to-do as to afford a milk house.
Grandma and Grandpa Boatright’s house was painted white. To be able to afford paint for a house in those days, in the Ozark Mountains, was strong evidence of wealth or being “well-off”. There were many houses that never had a drop of paint on them.
My grandparents derived their cash income from selling farm products, corn, oats and wheat, hogs and cattle. They had a big garden and grew most of their food. They took corn and wheat to the flourmill in Berryville, where it was ground into meal and flour for their year’s supply. They were thrifty, ambitious, self-reliant, honest, upright, hard working people.
Their big front yard was fenced. The grass on the lawn was kept green and trimmed during the growing season. Grandma liked flowers. The one I remember best were yellow roses, wild pink roses, honeysuckle, and peonies. (They called them pee-o-nies, different to the way we pronounce it today). Four-o’clocks, Zinnias (“Zennies” in Arkansas), bleeding heart and lilacs also added beauty to their lovely farm home in the summer. Around one side of the front yard were straight, even ricks of stove wood. The wood, hickory, oak and cedar, grew on the rocky, hilly side of the farm. Besides producing timber the land was used for pasture for the horses and cattle. The hogs had separate holdings.
A lovely grove of hickory and black walnut and oak trees stood between the house and the two barns. In the grove wood was chopped or sawed. Chips were for kindling fires and lay thick in that area. Grandpa and his boys shod the horses there, also. Horses with saddles were tied there for short times. The grove was totally off limits for such things as building a playhouse for there was too much work going on in the grove. Seems like I can remember playing tree tag there with Uncle George, Cousin Carl and Aunt Sue and Aunt Anna Lee.
Milking time at Grandpa’s was an interesting activity during my early childhood visits. He had lots more cows to milk than we had on our farm. Every horse and cow had a name, so help me! My memory fails me at this point. Old “Shoestring”, an old bridled cow , is the only barnyard character whose name I can recall.
Grandpa ruled with sternness. Most kids could play in the hay in the barn lofts, but our Grandpa permitted no such activity. His reason made good sense. He believed the horses and cattle were entitled to hay that had not been “tromped” on by the young-uns.
Play Houses
On our visits to my grandparents it was fun to play house with Mamma’s little sisters. There were numerous, desirable locations for such recreational centers. In cold weather the mystery-filled attic housed the playhouse. Under the pear trees in the summer was a delightful spot. When outside we little girls could make mud pies without fear of mess making. We became extremely creative in making mud pies. We poured the thick chocolate-like earth and water mixture into discarded metal mason fruit jar lids. Before the mixture was baked by the sun the little cooks decorated the make-believe pastry with red buck berries, tiny pebbles, dog fennel’s yellow blossoms or anything else provided by Mother Nature.
Our most adventurous recreational center was in the granary when it held lots of threshed wheat. We had to climb a ladder to enter the small, tightly closed building. It wasn’t approved for safety by Mamma and the other adults. The tight restrictions made it more enticing. We rolled and tumbled and buried ourselves in the wheat. Once there was a crisis! I fell off the ladder while getting out and bawled like a calf. Mamma spanked her baby sister and blamed her for the accident. My aunt stayed mad at Mamma a long time.
Coffee for Neighbors
I’m sure Grandma was a good neighbor and was generous and kind to all. One interesting story I’ll share with you is about their neighbors. They had a habit of borrowing from our grandparents and seldom returned what they borrowed. Coffee was one of the few things Grandma bought in the store. Our grandparents drank not more than one cup a day, a sack would last them a long time, except when their neighbors used from their supply. Grandma didn’t have the nerve to refuse her neighbors. She discreetly resolved the problem by buying a cheaper kind of coffee. It was kept separate from Grandma’s supply in the cupboard and was called the “Neighbor’s Coffee”. (name has been omitted to protect innocent descendents)
Wells
While many farm homes at the turn of the century in the Ozark hill country got their drinking water from our springs, Grandpa was more modern- he had two wells near the house.
The Ash Hopper
As further evidence of being self-sufficient managers of their resources, our grandparents had an ash hopper. The ash hopper was a wooden box-like structure, which was about five feet high, perhaps about 3 ½ feet wide. It was open at the top, and was slanted “v” shaped at the bottom. There was a trough underneath this big container to catch and hold dark brown liquid that came from the water soaked ashes. The ashes from the fireplace and cook stove were first cooled and then dumped into the open ash hopper. When the ashes were soaked by the rain or snow that was a big help. Otherwise it became another farm chore for some of the children to perform. They had to pour water over the ashes. The dark brown water from the ash hopper had to be strained to remove all solid particles. It had a very important function in soap making.
Soap Making Day
This activity took place in the grove of trees located between the house and the barns. The process employed Grandma and the girls. A big black round iron wash kettle, on legs, was the most important item of equipment used. The dark brown liquid was put into the kettle and boiled. The liquid was used as a substitute for concentrated lye. Lye and fats are the two basic ingredients for making soap. Lye in cans probably wasn’t on the market at the time.
The supply of fats for soap making was plentiful. Grandma made sure to save drippings from cooking fat meat, and rancid lard and fat meat scraps. The fats combined with the liquid from the ashes were boiled and stirred and boiled nearly all day. It was a full time job for one person to keep the fire going to keep the contents boiling. The attendant assigned to stir the soap had no easy task. She used a long-handled carved ladle to stir the mixture and to skim off meat rinds. Grandma was choosey, even as to the wood used for the stirring stick. Those who helped make soap cried much of the time from the smoke getting in their eyes. When the mixture reached a thick stage it was cooled and poured out on a flat surface to harden. Later it was cut into bars, cured and stored on a shelf in the smoke house. A year’s supply was the amount produced. If it didn’t last long enough, another soap making day was scheduled.
Wash Day
Washday involved several hands and able bodies with strong backs. The boys hauled the wood. The grove of trees was the fair weather laundry location. Sturdy benches held the zinc washtubs. Water has hauled from the creek in a barrel for washing because it was softer than the well water. The boys hauled the water in the wagon. Water was heated in the big, black, iron kettle. White clothes were washed first, then they were boiled in the kettle. The women scrubbed the clothes on a brass scrub board and used their homemade soap. The first wash water was used for the white clothes, then for the colored dresses, aprons and faintly colored clothes, then used a third time for the men’s and boy’s overalls, socks and heavy items. From wealth and sheer necessity, Grandma had four big washtubs and two washboards.
Now Granny Boatright presided over washday with other strict rules such as Monday was almost a sacred day for washing. She made sure the project was started early in the morning. Clothes were hung on a line in the back yard in an orderly manner. The washing had to look good. Ironing required long hours of hard work, too. Sad irons were heated on the cook stove. Ironing began early in the day. A homemaker was considered slovenly who washed and ironed in the afternoon.
Around the Farm
The floors in their big farm home were bare except the parlor. The floors were scrubbed on Friday and Saturday – never on Sunday. Hot water with melted homemade soap and white sandstone were used to clean the wooden floors.
Brooms were used with great vigor to perform that housekeeping chore. The sandstone was composed of natural white sand and could be found in certain places on Grandpa’s farm. After cleaning, the rinsing with clean water left the floors smelling and looking pretty.
Six or more fat hogs were killed at one time. Usually in November after cold weather set in so the meat wouldn’t spoil, or be swarmed by flies. In those days neighbors often helped neighbors, but Grandpa had so many kids he had his own crew.
The hogs were scalded in a big metal vat or kettle, filled with boiling water. Then the carcass was scraped and cleaned.
The hard work had just begun. Pork products they made included lard, cured hams, bacon, sausage, scrapple and meat rinds for using in cracklin’ bread. The sausage was packed in corn shucks and stored in the smoke house. This was a generous year’s supply for the family.
Hog killin’ was a big job, which required the help of the whole family. This is truly a beautiful example of our grandparents’ struggle to provide well for their children and to teach them the value of work. There was always plenty of food in their home.
Grandpa was able to own a threshing machine. There was not another one for miles around. He and my uncles not only threshed their own wheat and oats, but they threshed for other farmers. They were paid in cash, grain, cows or hogs.
A big bell hung just outside the kitchen door on a pole. The beautiful tone could be heard clear down in the bottomland, by the creek, perhaps a mile away from the house. The bell was to let the men folks know that the noonday meal was ready. The bell was to be used only for that purpose. Grandpa didn’t allow us children to ring the bell just to hear it ring.
Politics
Grandpa was a strong Democrat. I don’t think Granny has highly interested in politics as she was too busy with her big family. Woman suffrage came about during the life of Grandma. It was 1917 that women in Arkansas were first permitted to vote in the presidential election. Full privileges for voting by women were granted in the United States in 1920. I think Grandma needed time to adjust to the new political freedom before she began to vote.
Grandpa was always very pleased that several of his Fancher relatives held government offices. I’m sure our grandparents were good, honest, law-abiding citizens.
Religion
My grandparents lived in the Snow community. The schoolhouse served also as the church house. Nearly every Sunday there was preachin’. Perhaps one Sunday a Baptist preacher conducted services and the next Sunday a Methodist preacher occupied the pulpit, then a Presbyterian would get a turn. It seemed to be a rather harmonious arrangement. I’m not sure which Church my grandparents had membership in.
Even as a child I knew they lived by good, Christian principles. They were kind, generous, honest, upright people. Grandpa was an early riser and a hard worker. Perhaps the thing he hated most was idleness. He was a good provider for his family. He was considered stern and cranky by some, but I think that was the way he showed firmness. There was love and orderliness in their home.
Mamma always said that Grandma was one of the best mothers-in-law on earth. My father agreed. They said Grandma loved all her daughters and sons-in-law like her own children.
The "Weaner"
Grandpa had a little lean-to, two room house on their farm known as the “Weaner”. It was down by Osage Creek about a mile from the house. It looked like Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace.
The little house was a home for their children when they got married. Free housing was provided for them until they were able to make it on their own. Some of the grand children were born in the “Weaner”, including my brother, Fred Harbert. Some of their children who found Home-Sweet-Home to be the “Weaner” were Kate, Booker, Tab, George, and Sue.
This was another example of the concern our grandparents had for their married children. Not many parents were able or willing to assist their married children with rent-free housing. They were loving, caring parents.
The Little Cemeteries on the Farm
There were two burial spots on Grandpa’s farm. As a child I was extremely curious about the people who were buried there. It always remained an unanswered question. The bits and pieces of information I gleaned was that some Negro slaves were buried there long before Grandpa owned the place. I’ve also heard from some of my relatives that Grandma’s seventeenth baby died at birth or was stillborn. I was told that baby was buried in the family garden in an unmarked grave. The baby had no name.
No more beautiful burial ground could be found, for their huge garden lined with long, neat rows of fresh vegetables was truly a feast for the eyes and the stomach, too. The family garden perhaps was on almost an acre of ground on the south side of the house.
My Grandparent’s Children
Their children were all born at home near Berryville, in Carroll County, Arkansas. They were:
1) Stella Gray, or “Kate”
2) William Booker
3) Joel Burton, or “Tab”
4) Joseph Smith
5) Robert Raymond
6) Thomas Carl
7) Roy Alvin
8) Charlie Fay (twin)
9) Maudie May (twin)
10) Hugh Neff
11) Pearl (twin)
12) Earl (twin)
13) Ona Grace
14) George Polk
15) Janie Sue
16) Anna Lee
At one time twelve of them were living. I knew all of them except Joe, Ray, Maudie May and Hugh. At this date (June 1985) Pearl and Sue are the two living children. Anna Lee Beard, the youngest child died while I was in process of writing this history. She died June 15, 1985 in Columbus, Nebraska, and was buried in Bellwood, Nebraska. She had no children.
Their Last Days
Grandma died when she was 51. After giving birth to sixteen healthy babies, having one stillborn, and miscarriages with two sets of twins, it’s no wonder she died at an early age! The poor dear was literally worn out! I fully expect her to be the Mother, the Super Mother of the year of her generation in Heaven. Grandma had five babies after her oldest child, Kate, was married.
I can remember Grandma being sick before her death. She came and stayed at our house for a while and Mamma took care of her. I don’t know what illness she died from, but I thought, after I was grown, a lot about her early death. I thought it was caused by cancer in her reproductive organs. I know that she was always cheerful and never complained. I don’t remember anything about her funeral. I know she was loved and admired by all who knew her.
Grandpa lived several years after Grandma died. He was devastated by her passing. The big farm and the big home were too much for him to care for alone. Some of his younger sons and their families lived with him from time to time. He never got over his grief from Grandma’s death.
The spring of 1933 Grandpa got a cold that turned to pneumonia. Uncle Bob and Aunt Vinnie were living with him at the time. Grandpa was worried because his son, Bob, had pneumonia at the same time. Grandpa wouldn’t complain or let on like he was sick. Uncle Bob got well. Our strong-willed Grandpa died from pneumonia sitting in his rocking chair. They were buried side by side in a beautiful cemetery in Berryville, Arkansas.
As mentioned before in this story, I am sincerely grateful for being a granddaughter of this God-fearing, Stalwart, noble couple. I am grateful for their example of strong Christian principles they lived by and for the sweet memories I have of them.
My Own Comments
Before closing, I need to say how pleased I have always been to have been named for my sweet little Grandmother Boatright. Many of you who read this story did not know my full name. It is Lucie Byrdean. It is pretty and I do appreciate it, but it’s length created problems for me. At this time I have felt guilty not using my full name. As far as I know, I am the only one of Grandma’s offspring who was named for her.
Grandma had so much love for her family and friends. Patience, tolerance and cheerfulness were among her many Christ-like virtues. Truly a great unselfish, virtuous, noble woman. I am so grateful to be one of their granddaughters. Please join with me in expressing gratitude to God for the wonderful example our beloved grandparents provide for us, their posterity.
We can truly be proud to have the honor to be a descendent of JOHN and BYRD BOATRIGHT.

Notes for LUCINDA ARTIMIS "ARTIE" WHITE:
Note: this family story was added to the website in the spirit of helping descendants. There is no concrete evidence that Bessie White is the daughter of Bill Boatright and Artie White.
It has been told to me that William ‘Bill’ Boatright married a woman named Lucinda ‘Artie’ White in about 1889 and a child, Bessie, was born on January 19, 1890. Bill and Artie parted company afterwards.
Artie is said to have married again to Alexander Blair, a civil war veteran. Artie and Alexander had and raised another child in addition to the child from the ‘Artie’ and ‘Bill’ marriage. Though, the child, Bessie, probably spent more time with her grandmother (Talitha Blevins White) than her birth mother, Artie.
The first child was named Bessie White. Later, Bessie White moved to Sapulpa Creek, Oklahoma where she met and married a man named Joseph Benjamin Lynch. ‘Bessie’ and ‘Joe’ had fifteen children.
Source: Glen Lynch, descendent of Artie White and William Boatright.
A review of Arkansas records shows no marriage record for William Boatright and Artie White. Perhaps
they never married and had Bessie Boatright White out of wedlock. After parting ways with William, Artie and Bessie
appear back with Artie's parents in the 1900 census. Both are listed as children of James and Talitha White,
Artie is listed as a son, "Artimus" and Bessie is listed as a daughter. James and Talitha did not have a son
named Artimus. If Bessie was born out of wedlock it could very well be that this fact was disguised to the census
taker. This also fits with stories handed down through the family that Bessie was raised more by her grandmother than
her mother.
