Notes for JAMES BOATWRIGHT:
The top of the James Boatwright crypt in the historic Keyes Cemetery west of the Tombigbee River features inscriptions that have endured the elements for more than 140 years.
James Boatwright was born January 9, 1797 and died in Itawamba County on July 17, 1865. According to the census records James came to Itawamba County after the 1860 census was taken. During the 1860 census year he was enumerated in the Fayette County, Alabama census (Fayette Court House Post Office). The census enumerates him as being 63 years of age, a farmer, and born in North Carolina. Listed in his household are his 54 year old wife Phebe, and children Thomas, James M., Arminda along with a 23 year old farmer by the name of John Wilkins.
Also listed in the 1860 Fayette County census nearby is the Daniel Boatwright family, probably James’ brother.
The 1860 Itawamba County census lists a Lewis Boatwright (age 50 born in SC) already living in Itawamba County with his wife Catharine, and children Sarah J., Thomas, Catharine, James K., George W. and Jasper M. This Boatwright family was living in the Keyes Cemetery neighborhood. Lewis Boatwright entered into a contract with the Itawamba County Board of Police during 1865 to operate a ferry on the Tombigbee River near Van Buren at Bean’s Crossing.

Notes for JAMES WILLIAM BOATWRIGHT:
In the Lexington, Co., S.C., 1850 census, there was a Washington Boatwright, age 23, listed as a Wagon Maker. His wife was Mary Hartley Boatwright, age 19. [These dates fit the records that we have.] They lived close to Basel Hartley, age 39 and his wife Matilda Eagan Hartley, age 26, and to Ellis Hartley, age 47 and his wife Abigail Howard Hartley, age 35. (Above from Melissa Streit, September, 1998 -- Lexington Genealogical Society)
The parents of Mary Hartley were Ellis Hartley and Abigail Howard Hartley-- Jerry Boatwright, 1998.
This looks like our James W. Boatwright by age and wife's name and age--- the census taker may have put down the wrong middle/first name, or James/Washington/William may have added it later.
James William Boatwright is buried in the Good Hope Church cemetery between his daughter, Sarah Mary Cecelia Boatwright Osborn and his son,Jefferson Davis Boatwright.
In 1998, Jerry Boatwright says "..... the man (who says James W. Boatwright was called "Wash") is my Uncle Lester from my mother's side of the family (the Browns); her side also goes into Abigail Hartley's line as Abigail's father. Ellis Hartley was my gr-gr-gr-grandfather. As to fitting into the Boatwright's, my Uncle Lester doesn't, but he was passing on family lore, and I am not very sure of it, but he is!! (he is in his 80's and rambles sometimes). But I think the name was James William and he was called "Wash" as a nickname or to distinguish him from several other Williams in the Boatwright family around here and the several James Boatwrights."
That might explain the 1850 listing as "Washington" for James William Boatwright: The census taker went by the house while James William was building wagons, and his wife, or whoever (or nobody was home and a neighbor gave the info) was there, when asked his name, just gave his nick-name as Wash, which the Census taker changed to "Washington". If we had the 1840 census, we might prove it one way or another.
He did later name one son William Boatwright and another James William Boatwright, Jr. So that sounds like his middle name was William.
He came from around Lexington Co./Columbia, S.C. in 1853 to work as a mechanic in the Tallassee, Alabama, cloth/cotton mill.
In the 1860 census of Tallapoosa Co., he is listed as a mechanic. His wife, Mary, is listed as age 27, illiterate. In the same household was Mary's brother, Jasper Hartley, age 22, born in S.C.
The Confederate government rented ,in late 1863 or early 1864, from the cotton mill in Tallassee, Alabama, a two storey stone building, attached to the main part of the old mill. This factory was supposed to make 6000 cavalry carbines for the CSA, but probably never made over 500. General Lee ordered these to be made to a pattern approved by him and General J.E. B. Stuart. Some were actually made, issued, and used. Marvin L. Boatwright said that James William worked as a Gunsmith here during the War. Since Marvin Boatwright was about 19 when James William Boatwright died, this information is probably correct. He said he worked in the building where the gunstocks were made. There is information that the proper wood for the stocks was hard to procure.
In the book, The Army of Robert E. Lee, (Page 141) it is stated that ~500carbines were ready for shipment on April 3, 1865, which was a little too late". There is some indication (letters, etc. There is a book about the Armory by Olivia Solomon of Tallassee) that stocks could not be made/procured reliably for the carbines.
The white wooden building, next to the Armory, in which the stocks were made, attached to the above stone building, fell down in a windstorm about 1995, but the other stone buildings still stand (1998). A great portion of the roof of the main mill building fell in during a violent rain storm in 1999.
In the early 1950's, Marvin Boatwright told his nephew, James Houston Boatwright, Jr., that James William Boatwright, Sr., Marvin's Grandfather, told him, Marvin, that he had worked "in that little white building down there" --- this building had the machinery for making stocks for the carbines.
All carbines on hand at the Armory were shipped to Macon, Ga., between April 2 and April 14, 1865.
At least 7 of these carbines are still extant (in 2000), in museums and private hands. The rifle-making machinery was purportedly boxed up and sent by wagon to the railroad to be shipped to Macon, Georgia, but no more is known so far(2000).
The Talisi Historical Society is planning to have made 100+ replicas of this carbine to sell to benefit the Society.
James William Boatwright and his two wives are buried, but not together,in Goodhope Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 14, west of Tallassee, Ala.Mary Abigail Hartley Boatwright is not in a list of Boatwright graves in Goodhope Cemetery.
She died in 1864, the same year as James William Boatwright, II, was born, possibly of some post-child birth problem.
Marvin Boatwright said that there is a well-known family legend that James William Boatwright ran off to Texas with a sister of his wife Sarah Langley, somewhat before 1887. Nothing was known of his stay in Texas. In the late 1890's or so, he wrote back home to say that that sister had died out in Texas, and asked if he could come home. He was in the Tallassee or Birmingham area in 1908. There is nothing written about this. He did sell/give all/most of his land to the children by his first wife. Some family members say he went around Temple, Texas -- there area lot of Boatwrights there -- or to "Boatwright", Texas. There is a place in Texas known as Boatwright Wells. Supposedly he had 4 more children there in Texas, maybe around Temple.
George Washington Boatwright, with his wife and infant son, James William Boatwright, IV, rode the train to Temple, Texas, and visited James William Boatwright, Sr., in Temple, Texas, in 1887 --- this is by word-of-mouth from Geo. Washington family descendents.
The following is from Winifred Hardy Allan Akridge (descendant of G. W. Boatwright, Sr.) in
2002:

Apparently he returned to Elmore County and redeemed his property July, 1908.
James H. Boatwright, Jr., was told by his Uncle, Marvin L. Boatwright, that Sarah's sister, or whoever he went to Texas with, died, and James W., Sr. was granted permission by the family to return by 1902-08.
We have a photograph of James William Boatwright taken in Birmingham in, we have good reason to believe, 1908 during the Confederate Reunion held there.
This is from Cathryn Crumpton --- May or June 2003:
"Yes to the question about Jettie being Julia and Julius's daughter. She was my
grandmother. She had 7 children that lived to adulthood. She died in the 1930's. Jettie
was their only child. There was a D. Langley listed. There is a possibility that this is
Sarah's mother since Isam & Delilah were her parents. I had found Isam & Delilah with
their children on the 1850 census and one of the children was Sarah and she was the right
age to be our Sarah. I found Delilah on the 1860 census as head of household with Sarah
still living in the household with her and she was 16. I have heard the same story about
James running off with a woman to Texas from my uncle who was a small child at the time.
He said that his grandfather came by their house and wanted his mother Jettie to let him
see Sarah. Jettie told him he would have to talk to Julia. Julia rufused to let him see
her mother because by that time she was insane and living with them and did not want her
upset. He did not know that the other woman was Sarah's sister and did not know her name.
He did not even know what happened to her after he left their house."
There is a John W. and John W., Jr. on the 1910 census living at Crockett, Houston County, Texas. In the other part of the house is Wm. Osborn and Sallie B. Osborn. Sallie is the child of James W. Boatwright and his wife, Mary Hartley. I strongly suspect that this John W. and James W. are the same person. Family lore has it that James W. left Elmore County, Alabama with the sister of his second wife, Sarah Langley, and moved to Texas. The 1880 census shows "O. Langly", and three children, Melvin, Walter and Linsey, living with James and Sarah Boatwright. Walter and Lindsey are included in the 1910 census, apparently adopted by James William Boatwright. Since the 1880 census lists Melvin, Walter and Linsey with the last name of "Langly", it is most likely that "O. Langly" was the wife of one of Sarah's brothers.
From Winifred Allen Akridge (Cousin Winnie):
James. W. Boatwright was my ggrandfather. He and his first wife, Mary Abigail Hartley , were both born in Lexington County, SC. They had six children: Sarah Mary Cecelia, called Sally or Celey (15 Aug 1852 SC --- 28 Aug 1938 Elmore Co. AL), Daniel Webster (2 Aug 1854 Tallapoosa County, AL --- 15 Sep 1931 Elmore Co., AL), Henry Clay Boatwright (16 Jun 1856 Tallapoosa Co., AL --- 1 Jul 1933 Elmore Co., AL ), James William (________, d. 1933 Colbert Co., AL), Jefferson Davis (27 Mar 1861 Tallassee, AL --- 18 May 1934 Macon, GA) and my grandfather, George Washington Boatwright (4 Feb 1863 Tallassee, Tallapoosa Co., AL --- 8 Oct 1932 Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL) Mary died in 1864 shortly after the birth of my grandfather and is buried in a tiny cemetery in the woods near Tallassee in Tallapoosa County called the Boatwright Cemetery. Apparently they lived near there at the time of her death.
All of those children are buried at Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in what is now Elmore County, AL with the exception of James William (the son) and George Washington. The community is known as Flea Hop and was once a part of Tallapoosa County. Both James W. and his first wife were born in the Lexington County area of South Carolina. They came to Alabama between 1850 and 1855 since they are shown on the 1850 Census of Lexington County, SC but are shown on the 1855 Alabama State Census as living in Tallapoosa County, AL. He reportedly came to this area to work as a mechanic at Tallassee Mills, a large cotton mill, in Tallassee. Additionally he farmed and was a blacksmith. When the Civil War began he worked in an area of the mill where weapons were made. These rifles were known as the Tallassee Rifles. There are very few in existence and are very collectible.
James W.married Sarah Langley after Mary's death and they had five additional children including John Lloyd (19 Oct 1865 --- JAN 1940), Charles Langley (15 Feb 1867 --- 8 Feb 1948); Irving L. (18 May 1868 --- 12 Nov 1906); Elizabeth B. (1870 ---d. Jan 27, 1930). All of those children are buried in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery except Elizabeth who is buried in Proctor Cemetery near Comanche, TX. Additionally James and Sarah had another daughter, Julia A. (1872 --- 1965). All of those children were born in Elmore County, AL. and Julia is buried nearby in Tallassee, AL (NOT Florida). It should be noted that Sarah Langley Boatwright is also buried in Good Hope Cemetery but in a different area from James. W. She is buried between their son Irving and the first wife of their son, John Lloyd, Luna Beaty, who died shortly after she gave birth to their son, James Houston in 1899. James Houston is the infant shown in Sarah's home on the 1900 Elmore County, AL census.
James left Sarah and the children in the early 1880's and reportedly ran off to Texas with Sarah's sister with whom he had four more children. If you will look on the 1880 Census of Elmore County, AL three of those children are shown in the home he shared with Sarah and their children. He appears on the 1900 Census of Coltharp, Houston County, TX listed as John W. Boatright (note spelling) with the birthdate of Aug 1827, born in SC. He lists a wife, Annie O. whose information fits the O. Langley shown in the home of James W. and Sarah back in Elmore County, AL in 1880. Although the children are using different names, their birthdates are the same.
On the 1910 census of Crockett in Houston County, TX John W. Boatright is shown as a widower with one son, John Jr. (not to be confused with his other son John Lloyd who is still living in Elmore County, AL at the time). What really gives more credence to the fact that this is the same person is that he and his son, John W., Jr. are shown living in what appears to be a duplex and in the other half of the house is his daughter, Sarah Mary Ceceila Boatwright called Sally, and her husband, William Albert Osborn. Family lore has it that he wrote to his children back in Elmore County, AL telling them that his wife had died, he was old and sick and he asked permission to return to Alabama. He did return to Alabama and lived with one of his sons by his first marriage, Henry Clay Boatright, until he died 15 Sep 1915. The Osborns also returned to Alabama about the same time since William Osborn applied for a Confederate pension in Elmore County, AL in 1912. Mr. Osborn also died in 1915 and he and James W. Boatwright aka John W. Boatright are buried in adjoining plots in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery along with many of his children by his first two wives. Whatever happened to his children by Annie O. Langley is unknown to me.
Anything you could do to help us clear up some of the mysteries would certainly be appreciated. It should be noted that one of his sons, Henry Clay, always left the (w) out of his sirname while some of the others might spell theirs one way at one time and the other at another. I am told that my grandfather was a stickler to be certain that his was always spelled with the (w).
You might be interested in knowing that the Boatwright Blacksmith Shop which once belonged to John Lloyd Boatwright is now on display in Old Alabama Town in downtown Montgomery complete with his tools and the old tree stump he used to hang his tools.
One of the sons, Henry Clay Boatright, married twice but never had children. He was quite wealthy for his day when he died in 1933, leaving his wife a fortune of $10,000, the use of the farm and the farm equipment, etc. but not his land. He left the children of three of his brothers (not all of his siblings) farms and when his wife died the rest of the land became the property of those children. There was no way the land could be fairly divided. He stipulated in his will that nothing could be sold until ten years after the death of the last member of the second generation. That person died in 1993 so the property could be sold beginning in 2003. The land consisted of seven parcels. From the original eleven heirs the number of heirs grew to thirty eight by the time it could be sold. An LLC was formed to facilitate the sale and the LLC was just closed out at the end of 2007, an estate that ran for seventy six years before it could be settled. I have been told that this will is used in some law schools as how NOT to write a will.

Notes for MARY ABIGAIL HARTLEY:
Mary's middle name was probably Abigail after her Mother.
She probably died from some child-birth problem.
Her grave cannot be found in the Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Elmore Co., Ala.
Just wanted you to know that I FINALLY found the burial place for Mary Abigail Hartley Boatwright, the wife of James W. Boatwright. She is buried in a very small cemetery (5 identified graves) in a deeply wooded area of Tallapoosa County, Alabama not far from Tallassee.
Here is the inscription:
Mary A. Boatwright
Jun 17, 1831 --- Feb 07, 1864

Her grave is enclosed by a fence which appears to be original.
