He married FANNIE JANE SHANKS 13 Apr 1907 in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri, daughter of MICHAEL NEWTON SHANKS and NANNIE JANE KILGORE. She was born 23 Jul 1888 in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri, and died 29 Dec 1963 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas .
Notes for WILLIAM HARRISON BOATRIGHT:
William Harrison Boatright, son of Erasmus Franklin Boatright and Mary Catherine Ferguson, was born on Friday, 11 December 1885 at 1119 East 13th Street, Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri. He died on Thursday, 27 August 1942, at Los Angeles, California. He is buried in Space 1, lot 147, Section B, Acacia Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas.
So far as is known, William Harrison spent his entire childhood in Sedalia. He learned the baking trade there, and when he reached about 21 years of age, he apparently got a job as a baker in Warrensburg, Missouri where he met his future wife. It is believed that he met her through her brother-in-law, Claude James Claybury, who was a friend of William Harrison’s, probably at a picnic or party at either Electric Springs or Pertie Springs, both located near Warrensburg, and which were very popular outing places in those days.
On Saturday, 13 April 1907, William Harrison Boatright and Fannie Jane Shanks, daughter of Michael Newton Shanks and Nannie Jane Kilgore Shanks, were united in marriage by the Reverend George J. Hunt, Pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Warrensburg. Fannie Jane’s brother-in-law Claude James Clayburg, and her sister Nellie Belle Shanks Clayburg, were the witnesses to the marriage.
Fannie Jane Shanks was born on Monday, 23 July 1888, on a farm near Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. She died on Sunday, 29 December 1963, in Stormont-Vail Hospital at Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. She is buried in Space 2, Lot 147, Section B, Acacia Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Topeka, Kansas.
The newly-weds established themselves in a room, or rooms, in the 200 Block of South Washington Street, in Warrensburg. The exact address has never been determined. It is here that their first “blessed event’, the birth of their first child, William Erasmus Boatright, occurred on Tuesday, 5 January 1909.
William Harrison and Fannie Jane, on 29 July 1909, joined the Queen City Council, Chapter 564, of the Knights and Ladies of Security, of Sedalia, Missouri. Each of them took out $1,000 of insurance, with a total payment of $1.70 per month. As far as is known, they belonged to the Knights and Ladies of Security as long as they lived.
In August of 1909, William Harrison went to Kansas City, Missouri for the purpose of trying to find a better paying job, it is believed. Apparently he was not successful though, for there is no record of them moving to Kansas City at this time.
Sometime in late-1909 or early 1910, William Harrison and Fannie Jane, with their son William Erasmus, moved to Sedalia, Missouri where William Harrison had obtained another baking job at Streng’s Bakery on Ohio Street, in the main part of town.
On arriving in Sedalia, they moved into a house at 1120 East 13th Street, on the corner of 13th and Engineer Streets, across from the home of Erasmus Franklin and Mary Catherine Ferguson Boatright, his parents.
Shortly after moving into the house at 1120 East 13th Street, William Harrison and Fannie Jane began buying it.
On Wednesday, 5 July 1911, another son, Albert (no middle name), was born to William Harrison and Fannie Jane. He had a neck ailment of some kind, and died on Saturday, 8 July 1911. Both events, birth and death, took place in Sedalia, Missouri. He is buried in Block 2, of the Crown Hill Cemetery at Sedalia, Missouri.
Sometime in 1912 William Harrison moved his family to Windsor, Henry County, Missouri where he worked as a baker in Mr. Frisbie’s Bakery at 116 South Main Street. When the family first moved to Windsor, they lived in a room, or rooms, at Mrs. Green’s, directly behind the bakery, in the 100 block of South Tebo Street, on the east side of the street.
They did not live in Mrs. Green’s rooms very long, but soon moved to an apartment above the bakery. Their living room was on the front, and the windows provided an excellent place for overseeing the Main Street activities. There was a fire almost directly across the street one night, and William Erasmus slept through all of the excitement. He was very unhappy with his parents the next morning, when he found out what had occurred, and they had not awakened him to see it.
The family lived in the apartment only for about a year, then moved to a house located at 201 East Colt Street, on the southeast corner of East Colt and South Windsor Streets. They lived in this house until they left Windsor, sometime in 1915.
A Mr. and Mrs. Wall were the neighbors in the first house to the east of Colt Street. Mr. Wall had several horses and wagons, which intriqued William Erasmus greatly, and he was over at the neighbors at every opportunity. Fannie Jane issued him strict instructions not to climb around the wagons, and of course, these instructions were soon ignored. As a result, one afternoon he was climbing on the wagons when he slipped and fell, hitting his left breast on one of the wheel hubs, breaking a rib. Knowing he would probably be punished for disobeying orders, he suffered in silence. However, it soon became time for a bath, and Fannie Jane noticed a large bump on his left breast where the rib was broken, and the story of what happened was soon out in the open. His parents took him to a doctor, but the bump where the rib healed together remained visible long into his adult years.
On Wednesday, 8 May 1912, Fannie Jane’s mother, Nannie Jane Kilgore Shanks Utt, died at her second husband’s (John Porter Utt) farm, near Centerville, Missouri. William Harrison and Fannie Jane attended the funeral in Warrensburg, and it is believed, took William Erasmus to the funeral also. Nannie Jane was buried in the Sunset Cemetery at Warrensburg.
On Thursday, 2 October 1913, William Harrison and Fannie Jane were witnesses to the marriage of William Harrison’s sister, Letha Ellen Boatright to Frederick Dalton at Windsor, Missouri.
In September of 1914 William Erasmus began his schooling in the first grade of the Windsor Elementary School. One evening as he was walking home from school, he and another boy got into a fight over a girl. The other boy hit William Erasmus behind the right ear with a rock, and soon after William Erasmus developed a mastoid abscess of the ear. He was taken to the hospital at Kirksville, Missouri for an operation which was successful, but he bears the scar of this operation to this day.
Sometime in 1915, William Harrison left his job in Windsor and moved the family to Sedalia, Missouri for a short time; then on to Solomon, Kansas where he had another job in another bakery. They did not remain in Solomon very long, as William Harrison had bigger, and better plans for the future.
On Tuesday, 30 November 1915, he signed an agreement with Mr. G. R. Chamberlin to buy the bakery fixtures in the Brown Building at 119 Wyoming Street, at the intersection of Wyoming and First Streets, in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. He moved his family to Pleasant Hill at the same time.
It is not known exactly when William Harrison opened his bakery and confectionary for business, but it was shortly after the first of January 1916. He named it the “Square Deal Bakery and Confectionary” and had seals printed up in the form of a square, with the words “Square Deal” in the center, which he used in sealing the ends of the wrapping of his bread.
In addition he made up some aluminum chips, which it is believed he sold 6 for 25 cents. Each chip was good for one loaf of bread which he ordinarily sold for 5 cents a loaf.
William Harrison was an excellent baker and candy maker. Fannie Jane used to bring William Erasmus down to the bakery just as William Harrison was bringing the bread out of the ovens, and they delighted in cutting the heels off of loaves of bread, buttering them, and eating them while they were still hot. Needless to say, William Harrison was not particularly overjoyed with this practice.
He made new candy about once a week, and also roasted fresh peanuts about as often. Fannie Jane and their son would also come down to eat the peanuts while they were hot. Again, William Harrison did not care too much for this practice. One of his specialities was divinity candy, and it was so delicious that it would practically melt in your mouth.
On arriving in Pleasant Hill, William Harrison had established his family in a small house at 113 Boardman Street on a hill back of the bakery and confectionary. It was a long walk down Wyoming Street, across the railroad tracks at the regular crossing, to the left up the hill past the City Hall and Jail House, then up Boardman Street to the house. It was much easier to go out the back door of the bakery or the house, and go across the railroad tracks either into the house or the bakery, epending on which direction you were traveling. This was the route that William Harrison and William Erasmus usually traveled, while Fannie Jane usually took the longer route.
Shortly after moving to Pleasant Hill, William Harrison got William Erasmus an English bulldog, which they named “Bully”. Bully was a large brindle colored bull dog, and of a very agreeable nature. He would let William E. do almost anything to him, and once William E. hit Bully on the head with a hammer for some unknown reason – Bully just blinked his eyes, shook his head, and that was that.
One afternoon William E. and Bully left the house to go to the bakery by the short route, but when they got to the railroad tracks a train was passing so they waited. About the time the caboose of this train reached them, another train was coming from the opposite direction on the tracks furthest away. William E. heard the oncoming train, however, Bully apparently did not notice it, and as soon as the first train’s caboose cleared him, he took off for the other side, and the oncoming engine hit him and threw him through the air on the other side away from William E., who naturally believed that Bully had been killed, and stood there crying. Finally the train passed, and there was Bully, scarred, bleeding and bruised, but still alive and not hurt too badly, waiting for his master.
During the early part of 1916, William Erasmus contracted double pneumonia, and William Harrison and Fannie Jane were afraid that they were going to lose their son, as the medical doctors said there was nothing that they could do, it was only a matter of time. However, a friend of William Harrison’s, Doctor George S. Elkins, Osteopathic Physician, and a Canadian, would not take the doctor’s verdict as final, went to work on William Erasmus, and saved his life.
On Friday, 7 July 1916, another blessed event took place for William Harrison and Fannie Jane, their first daughter, Mary Jeanette Boatright, being born at 113 Boardman Street. William Harrison’s mother, Mary Catherine Ferguson Boatright came from Sedalia to Pleasant Hill to assist them during this occasion.
Shortly after the birth of Mary Jeanette, the family moved to 125 Front Street, almost directly back of the backery.
In September of 1915, William Erasmus started to school again in the third grade of the Pleasant Hill Elementary School. On Tuesday afternoon, 26 September 1916, his class was released about 3:15 p.m. and as usual, rushed pell mell outdoors to head for home. The subsequent happenings, it is believed, are best described by quoting an account from the Windsor, Missouri newspaper, the “Windsor Review”, which was almost an exact copy of the account by the “Pleasant Hill Times”, but with added comments by the Editor:
William Boatright Fearfully Hurt – We and the Community Whom Knew him and his
Excellent Parents Deeply Sympathize with Them
William, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Boatright, pupil of the third grade at Central School, left school at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26th, for home. He attempted to ride on the back of a buggy with other boys, but either slipped or was pushed off. Falling between the bed of the buggy, and the right rear wheel, his clothing caught on the hub and his left leg and body twisted in such a manner as to inflect most fearful injuries on the leg. It was broken above the hip and the splintered bone driven through the flesh, both bones between the knee and ankle were shattered and there were three extensive and ghastly flesh wounds, the flesh being stripped to the bone and hanging in shreds. One of these spiral in form, winding about the knee. Minor injuries were numerous.
The splintered bone grazed a major artery and it was forced through the flesh and in the spiral tear, the flesh was stripped from another large artery, laying it bare, but not opening it. Had either one of the arteries been opened, it is said, the child would have bled to death before medical assistance could have reached him.
The injured child was given emergency treatment by Dr. Fair and Dr. Yeagle and 45 minutes after the accident he was being rushed to the Swedish hospital, in Kansas City, on the Scenic limited. He reached the hospital shortly after 5 p.m. accompanied by Dr. Fair and his father, but did not go to the operating table until 8. With Dr. Kohn in charge, the shattered bones were set and the torn flesh sewn.
Mrs. Harvey Lyles, residing north of town and Miss Gladys McCullough, riding in a buggy and driving a gentle nag, were passing Central School when the little third graders were excused. Five of the boys including William, rushed for the buggy to ride on the back. Having found by previous experience that the little chaps were determined to ride, Mrs. Lyles permitted them to get on. All seeming safely established and one of the boys telling her that it was all right to go ahead, Mrs. Lyles started.
She was just a block south in front of the Fair home when a shriek caused her to look around just as the other boys on the buggy jumped down and ran screaming away. The Boatright boy was on the hub, his leg seemingly twisted around the hub twice, his clothing nearly torn off and his body in such a position, that had the wheel made another revolution, his neck would have been broken.
Fortunately this horse was gentle and stopped stock still. But Miss McCullough jumped to run to the bridle. She fell, but was up again instantly, and held the horse while Mrs. Lyles, unaided, disentangled the little boy, a heart-rending task, as she could see that he was terribly hurt. Willie gasped that he wanted to go home, and Mrs. Lyles placed him on the buggy, but Mrs. Fair said that it would be best to carry him into her home, as the doctor could reach him there sooner by motor than she could drive to town. This was done, and Dr. Fair and Dr. Yeagle, in their cars, raced to the scene, the latter bringing the boy’s father.
During all this time, through agonized by his hurts, Willie white-lipped, remained conscious, even through the first aid, and afterwards through the hour’s ride to the city, and until he went to the table.
The local doctors say his leg is one of the most dreadful mangled (for the nature of the case) that they have ever seen. But the fractures seem to have been successfully reduced and the flesh wounds taken up. There is hope for a complete recovery.
The boy has had a lot of trouble during his short life. Once he fell from a wagon, and broke a rib, and before the Boatrights moved to this city, he was struck on the back of his head with a rock by another boy, while returning from school, and yet bears the marks of that grevious hurt. This spring the little chap had double pneumonia and for several days his life wavered in the balance.
With tears in her eyes, Mrs. Lyles told of the accident. She said that she had passed the school boys so often and knew that it was useless to try to keep them off, without simply driving them away, so when the little fellows wanted to ride Tuesday she waited until they were seemingly safely established, before she went slowly ahead. “I’m so sorry”, she said, “But I couldn’t help it” – Pleasant Hill Times.
William Boatright is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Boatright, formerly of Windsor. We knew them and their boy, who is a manly little fellow. Our deepest sympathy goes out to them and to William in his necessarily awful suffering. Their many friends in Windsor sympathize deeply with them and hope that William’s serious injuries may be relieved and that he may have soon a complete recovery – Editor.
Note: The above account is in error in at least one, and probably two, respects.
The major break occurred between the hip and the knee, not about the hip – this I
know, I still carry the scars. I also have always remembered that I was on the axle
next to the left rear wheel, and that we boys were pushing each other, etc., and
that my left foot slipped and got caught in the wheel, which turned over three
times, winding my left leg around the axle – I may be wrong about this, but it is
the way I remember it. I also remember riding on a cot in the baggage car of the
train, being transferred to an ambulance in Kansas City, and the ride to the
hospital. I also remember the Doctor asking me if I could count to a hundred, then
telling me to do so while he started giving me ether in preparation for the
operation. The account that I was taken to the Swedish hospital may be correct;
however, my mother Fannie Jane always told me that it was St. Luke’s hospital. –
William Erasmus Boatright
It is not known how long William Erasmus was in the hospital at Kansas City, but it is believed to have been about two or three months.
He was in a plaster cast from above his hips, around his stomach, down his leg to his foot, with only the big toe sticking out. When the cast was taken off, and he was released from the hospital to go back to Pleasant Hill, the leg was very stiff of course, and Fannie Jane spent many, many hours rubbing the leg with snake oil, trying to get the stiffness out of it. She was very successful, the stiffness leaving the leg almost completely. William E. had never been able to bend the leg completely back, but was in later years able to participate in several sports such as baseball, basketball, football, and eventually to hve an Army career.
William Harrison’s mother, Mary Catherine Ferguson Boatright, came from Sedalia to Pleasant Hill after William Erasmus returned from the hospital, and while he was trying to learn to walk on crutches. He was evidently progressing rather nicely, because Fannie Jane and Mary Catherine decided to let him walk with them from 125 Front Street to the bakery. He got down the front steps in fine shape, and out to the sidewalk. Before reaching the corner though, he fell and Fannie Jane and Mary Catherine, greatly alarmed, picked him up, took him back into the house, and that was the end of his trying to walk outdoors for quite some time.
William Erasmus has always believed that his accident, and the resultant heavy expenses, were too much for William Harrison and Fannie Jane, although they have always denied it. Anyway, William Harrison gave up the bakery and confectionary in early 1917, and moved the family to Sedalia for a short while.
It was not long though until William Harrison got another job as a baker with Mr. Gertz, whose bakery was on the east side of the street in the 800 block of North Kansas Avenue, at North Topeka, Kansas. The family moved to North Topeka on 30 May 1917, and at first occupied rooms at what in 1965 was 833 North Van Buren Street.
Shortly after moving to Topeka, the draft for World War I was announced, and William Harrison was summoned to register for the draft. He took his entire family with him when he went to the Courthouse to register, and probably thinking that he might be drafted, went from there to the photographers to have a family group picture made, so that he might take it with him if he were drafted.
The house at 833 North Van Buren Street was located next door to a negro church which fascinated the neighborhood children. William E. apparently was getting around very well without his crutches by this time, and he and the other children one evening made a pact between themselves that they would station several of them at each window of the church, and windows being open, and upon a given signal all of them would yell as loud as they could. They did, and it seemed to them that the negroes came out of the church from every nook and cranny. The children all ran home, including William E., who got under a bed at home right quick! One of the negro men came to the door and talked to Fannie Jane, telling her what had happened. When the negro left, Fannie Jane got William E. out from under the bed, and gave him a good talking to about the rights of others.
In the fall of 1917 William E. again began his schooling in the third grade at Quiney Elementary & Junior High School at 1101 North Quiney Street. It was shortly after this that William Harrison moved his family to 1319 North Monroe Street in North Topeka, Kansas.
Shortly after moving to 1319 North Monroe Street, it was discovered that William E’s leg bone was not healing properly, and it was necessary for him to enter Stormont Hospital in the Potwin District of South Topeka for another operation. A slit was cut in the outside part of the left thigh, and a portion of bone removed. The operation was a success, and William E. had no more trouble with the leg.
It was probably during the summer of 1918 or 1919 that William H. decided that it was time that William E. learned to play baseball. He bought a glove and a baseball for William E., and they went out in the yard on the south side of the house to play catch. William H. apparently did not want to chase any wild throws, so he stationed himself near the first floor bedroom, with William E. at the front part of the yard. William H. threw the ball to William E., who tried to throw it back- however, a wild throw resulted, and the bedroom window was broken. Needless to say, this was the end of the ball game.
One summer, probably 1919, William Harrison had been mowing the yard at 1319 North Monroe Street, and had left the lawn mower for a few minutes, probably to get a drink of water. William Erasmus, for some unknown reason, turned the lawn mower over, and started pulling it backwards, probably just to see the reel spin around. Mary Jeanette apparently fascinated by the spinning reel, ran over to it and stuck her left hand in it. Thank goodness she did not get her entire hand in the spinning reel, but it did cut off the tip of her little finger.
Of course William Erasmus and the rest of the family were horrified, and rushed Mary Jeanette to the doctor. The doctor was not able to sew the tip of the finger back on, and Mary Jeanette has spent her entire life with the tip of her little finger on her left hand missing. She, in later years though, was able to play the violin, apparently with no difficulty.
On Monday, 10 November 1920, William Harrison and Fannie Jane experienced another blessed event, the birth of their son Jack Edward Boatright. He was born at 1319 North Monroe Street, Shawnee County, Topeka, Kansas.
Sometime in 1920 William Harrison moved his family to 154 Holman Street in North Topeka, just west of Garfield Park. It was noted in 1964 that the house number had been changed, and the same house now bore the number 170 instead of 154.
Shortly after moving to the new residence, William Harrison became interested in having an automobile and bought a 490 Chevrolet touring car. On the back of the property there was a barn with large doors opening into the alley, and William Harrison fixed this barn up to serve as a garage. The first time he drove the car he took his family for a ride, and coming home after dark he wanted to put the car in the garage. The entrance to the alley was about a block and a half east of the house, and immediately after entering the alley there was a small hill and shortly after that is was necessary to make a very sharp turn to the left to go west up the alley to his garage. William Harrison was not very expert, and was afraid he might kill the engine in getting up the hill, so he stopped at the bottom, put the car into first gear, let out his clutch, stepped on the gas - - and roared up the small hill. He was going so fast that he couldn’t make the left turn, and dived through a barbed wire fence into the woods. He finally got the car stopped just before hitting a large tree, and when the family got out of the car, they found that the barbed wire had completely cut off the radiator spout and cap. William Harrison had his share of the “Boatright uneven temper”, and swore he would never drive the car again, so it was left there and the family walked home. Of course he changed his mind the next day, got the car out of the woods, and resumed driving again.
Sometime later he took his family to Sedalia, Missouri to visit Grandpa and Grandma Erasmus and Mary Boatright. Going through Kansas City was an ordeal for the entire family, not only on this trip, but on all subsequent trips. William Harrison seemed to always get behind a street car which stopped at every corner, and of course, he had to stop too. There were always automobiles and other obstructions which prevented him from going around the street car when it started up, and he always claimed that the street cars and every other automobile that got in front of him, had been waiting all day for him to come along so they could cause him trouble!
The roads at that time were very bad, very few paved or gravel roads, and once on the way to Sedalia, near Knobnoster, Missouri it had been raining, and there were three deep ruts in the road. Of course there was another car coming toward him, and William Harrison could not get out of the ruts he was in, and the other car could not either, so both cars stopped head on to each other. Finally after much argument, one of the cars, it is not remembered which, backed up for about a mile to where the other car could get around. The incident, of course, did not improve the “Boatright uneven temper” a bit.
About half a block west of the Boatright home on Holman Street was Soldier Creek which had a neighborhood swimming hole at the end of Holman Street, and this is where William Erasmus learned to swim. One afternoon William Harrison and some other neighbors took William Erasmus to the swimming hole, and threw him in. William Erasmus came up, sputtering and blowing, but learning how to shim, swam out with the simple “dog-fashion” swimming stroke.
Mr. and Mrs. Mack Johnston, with their son Walter (called Tim), and their daughter Virginia, lived two doors west of the Boatright’s on Holman Street. The Johnston’s and the Boatright’s became very good friends and used to go picnicking and swimming a lot. One place that they went for picnics and swimming was called Mud Valley, several miles north of Topeka. Tim and William Erasmus became very good friends.
It was about 1921 when William Erasmus and Tim Johnston became Boy Scouts, and during the summer went to the Boy Scout Camp at Maple Hill, Kansas. They had a wonderful time at camp, of course, and the Boatright’s and the Johnston’s drove up the second Sunday to see them. One incident took place at the camp which they boys believed very amusing at the time. The camp chef was a colored man, a Pullman Diner Chef, and probably was an excellent cook. However, he made soup for nearly every meal, and one evening served some soup that none of the boys had ever tasted the like of before. They didn’t like the taste, and all of them began complaining about the “dishwater soup”. The chef got very angry, took off his apron, and quit. The Scoutmasters, or whoever was in charge of the camp, got another cook from somewhere, and the boys did not go hungry although they probably should have.
In the summer of 1922 William Erasmus talked his father and mother into letting him go to work on a farm, picking potatoes, in order to get some extra money. William Harrison and Fannie Jane were not too much in favor of the idea, but finally agreed and let him go to work for a friend of theirs, Mr. C. V. Cochran, out on the lower Silver Lake Road. This was before the days of mechanized potato diggers, and Mr. Cochran used a team of mules and plowed the potatoes out of the ground. Each worker was given a section to pick the potatoes from, and the section was marked off by stakes placed in the ground by Mr. Cochran. Every once in a while the plow would turn up a snake, and whoever had the section that the snake appeared on, would run down the snake, grab it by the tail, and like snapping a whip, snap the snake’s head off. This interested William Erasmus greatly, and he was determined that sooner or later he would do the same. Finally the plow turned over a snake on his section, and he ran and grabbed the snake by the tail, only to have the snake wind itself around his arm instead of behaving as it should, and letting him snap its head off. With a shriek, William Erasmus threw his arm out as hard as he could, and the snake slithered off! This was the end of him grabbing snakes by the tail, he decided to let someone else have all the fun, he would be a spectator thereafter.
In the summer of 1923 William Erasmus got a job at Petro’s Drug Store in the 900 block of North Kansas Avenue. He swept the store out, waited on customers, and made deliveries in Kelsey Petro’s Ford sedan. This was one of the first glass enclosed sedans, very high off the ground. One day William Erasmus was making a delivery, heading north on Kansas Avenue in the sedan, and when he came to Gordon Street in front of the fire station, another car came at him from the left. William Erasmus could see that they were going to hit each other unless he did something very quickly, and tried to make a right turn onto Gordon Street. He almost made it, but the left wheels came up against the curbing, the car went up in the air, and dropped back down hard—all four wooden wheels collapsed, and the car settled down on the axles! No one was hurt, but it was a frightening experience for William Erasmus.
In the fall of 1922 William Erasmus was attending Quincy Junior High School in the 9th grade. A basketball team had been formed for the first time, and William Erasmus played center on the team. He won his letter, and enjoyed the playing very much, his leg not bothering him at all.
Mary Jeanette Boatright must have started to Quincy Elementary School in September of 1921; however, the compiler does not have any information about this.
As other family history compilers will know, it is much easier to get information from strangers than from ones immediate family. Therefore, this chapter is being closed out with incomplete information.

Notes for ESTELLA MARY BOATRIGHT:
She never married and became a Nun in the Sisters of Charity Order.
?In 1881, the two-story Sister Blandina Convent was built on the west side of the San
Felipe de Neri Church. The convent was occupied by the Sisters of Charity, who
staffed the parish school, until the late 1970s.
When Sister Blandina Segale and a group of nuns from Santa Fe arrived in Albuquerque's Old Town in 1881 to teach school, they took one look around the dusty plaza and decided to build a convent.
The construction entailed moving a graveyard and hiring a stonemason from Santa Fe, but eventually Albuquerque's first two-story adobe building was completed. Over the years, the still-standing convent, just west of San Felipe de Neri Church, also served as a school, post office and infirmary.
Although the past century has greatly changed the faces of the convent and other buildings in Old Town, a stroll around the plaza reveals many of its original structures. While many Victorian storefronts took on a "Pueblo Revival" appearance in the 1950s, vestiges of about 20 original structures can still be seen.
