According to family, John Boatright, went by John P. Boatright.

Preston may not have been his given name at birth.

John P. Boatright was orphaned by the Civil War. His father died of war wounds and his mother, Drucilla Christie, died within months of her husband's death. John and brother George were raised by Drucilla's brother, Preston Christie. John was given Preston's name as his middle name. Rumor is that Preston himself gave him the middle name as he loved John so much. When Preston died he named John in his will and left him $200.

9-437. JOHN NOLAN BOATRIGHT (JAMES S.9, POWHATAN VALENTINE8, JOHN JOSEPH7, DANIEL6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born Abt. 1843 in Union Parish, Louisiana, and died 25 Nov 1885 in Union Parish, Louisiana. He married NANCY EMILINE PURDY Abt. 1866 in Union Parish, Louisiana, daughter of W. J. PURDY and ANN. She was born 1848 in Alabama, and died 1890 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.

Notes for JOHN NOLAN BOATRIGHT:

John enlisted in Company "C" of the 17th Regiment of the Louisiana Infantry, C.S.A., on September 30, 1861. One year later he was transferred to the 31st Regiment of the La. Infantry. He was captured July 4, 1863, at the fall of Vicksburg, and paroled on June 12, 1865.

The Battle of Vicksburg, or Siege of Vicksburg, was the final significant battle in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. In a series of brilliant maneuvers, Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River and drove the Confederate army of Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton into defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Grant had captured Jackson, the Mississippi state capital, in mid-May 1863, forcing Pemberton to retreat westward. Attempts to stop the Union advance at Champion Hill and Big Black River Bridge were unsuccessful. Pemberton knew that the corps under William T. Sherman was preparing to flank him from the north; he had no choice but to withdraw or be outflanked. Pemberton burned the bridges over the Big Black River and took everything edible in his path, animal and plant, as he retreated to the well-fortified city of Vicksburg.

The Confederates evacuated Haine's Bluff, attacked by Sherman, and Union steamboats no longer had to run the guns of Vicksburg, now able to dock by the dozens up the Yazoo River. Grant could now receive supplies more directly than the previous route around Vicksburg, over the crossing at Grand Gulf, and back up north.

Over half of Pemberton's army of 17,500 had been lost in the two preceding battles, and everyone in Vicksburg expected General Joseph E. Johnston, in overall command of Confederate forces in Mississippi, to relieve the city—which he never did. Large masses of Union troops were on the march to invest the city, repairing the burnt bridges over the Big Black River; Grant's forces were across on May 18. Johnston sent a note to Pemberton, asking him to sacrifice the city and save his troops, something Pemberton would not do. (Pemberton, a northerner by birth, was probably influenced by his fear of public condemnation as a traitor if he abandoned Vicksburg.) Grant besieged the city, which surrendered six weeks later, yielding command of the Mississippi River to the Union.

The 31st Louisiana Infantry unit was attached to Brig. Gen. William E. Baldwin's Brigade of Maj. Gen. Martin Luther Smith's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg and was commanded by Col. Charles H. Morrison, Lt. Col. S. H. Griffin (KIA) & Lt. Col. James W. Draughon. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume I, page 225; Volume II, page 407 and Volume III, pages 779, 869 & 966.]

He returned to Union Parish and farmed until his death. Cause of death: Spider bite to his back.

Notes for ERASMUS FRANKLIN BOATRIGHT:

Erasmus Franklin Boatright and Mary Catherine Ferguson - Sedalia 1921 See link for Erasmus Franklin Boatright Bible pages.

The following was written by William E. Boatright in 1964 and published as a book, “The Boat(w)right and Allied Families”.

Erasmus Franklin Boatright, son of Charles Franklin Boatright (1831 – 1901) and Sarah Frances Butler Boatright (1834 – 1899), was born on Wednesday, 10 December 1856 at Otterville, Cooper County, Missouri. He died on Friday, 22 July 1932, at the home of his daughter Letha Ellen Boatright Dalton in Lewis Station, Henry County, Missouri. He is buried in lot 40, block 34, of the Crown Hill Cemetery at Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri.

In 1875 his father moved the family from Otterville to Sedalia, and established a home and his business there, on the corner of Third and Summit Streets. Erasmus Franklin was married soon after this move, so he spent most of his boyhood in Otterville.

Erasmus Franklin Boatright and Mary Catherine Ferguson - Sedalia 1929 On Tuesday, 27 November 1877, Erasmus Franklin married Mary Catherine Ferguson, daughter of Larkin Ferguson (1833 – 1871) and Lutitia Belle Wright Ferguson (1836 – 1890), at Beamon, Pettis County, Missouri. Mary Catherine Ferguson was born on Wednesday, 23 July 1856 at Beamon (then called Marlin), Missouri. She died on Monday, 15 June 1931, at Sedalia, Missouri and is buried in lot 40, block 34, of the Crown Hill Cemetery at Sedalia.

Erasmus Franklin was called “Razie” by most of his relatives and friends. In this connection his sister Minerva Jane Boatright wrote in 1960 as follows:

“As to the “Razie” name – how he hated it and I do not blame him. We never called him that, but “Raz” – almost as bad and that way the way he signed personal letters, “E.F.” other papers. It was my Dad’s (Charles Franklin Boatright) bright idea to give him that name, and he also named me. My brother Raz was a good man – maybe eccentric some ways – perhaps the name helped that psychologically. But he had the most brains of any of us, we all said that. The weakness for drink, which ruined his life, and which he conquered 15 – 20 years before he died, but too late as he wrote me once, began through an association with an older man who was a constant, steady drinker who never got drunk, or missed a day at work. At that time, I think Razie was about 19, and believe he was said to be the youngest telegraph operator on a railroad in the United States.

Erasmus Franklin Boatright and Mary Catherine Ferguson Marker Erasmus Franklin had a “home workshop” on the ground floor of a barn on the back of his property at 1119 East 13th Street, where he did woodworking as a hobby. The barn, in June 1960, had been torn down for several years. He had a scroll saw mounted on a sewing machine base which worked with a foot pedal the same as a sewing machine, and on which he turned out some beautiful work. William E. Boatright can remember seeing, as a very young boy, a large “whatnot” shaped similar to a cathedral and extending from the floor to the ceiling, standing in the front bedroom, and which was entirely scroll-work which was beautifully finished.

Erasmus Franklin, in his later years, wrote a Family Record which he did not date. This was passed on to William E. Boatright by Erasmus Franklin’s sister, Minerva Jane Boatright, in 1960 together with some notes in which she said that Charles Franklin traveled from West Virginia with his Uncle Dryden Starke, not his Uncle Milton Starke, as Erasmus Franklin said in his record.

Erasmus Franklin Family Record

Boatright

Cary Harrison Boatright was born of Scottish Irish parents, date unknown. Died about ?. Living in the west at the beginning of the War of 1812.

The family consisted of eleven – 11 – brothers. The following are known:

One named Powhatan Boatright, after the North American Indian Warrior
One named Tecumseh Boatright, after another Indian
One named Richard Boatright
One named William Boatright
One named Little Berry Boatright
One named Cary Harrison Boatright – as stated above
Others forgotten by the writer

Powhatan and Tecumseh being among the oldest of the lot.

Four – 4 – of the oldest enlisted in the Continental Army, and three of them were massacred by Indians – “British Allies”, at Craneys Island at the mouth of the Roanoke River in Virginia.

All others were scattered far and wide, but as far as known, all lived to an elderly age. All known by my grandfather, Cary Harrison Boatright as being very tall, rawboned men, from about 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 4 inches in stocking feet.

When my father was 8 years old, Uncle Milton Starke and family, with Pa and his Mother emigrated to Missouri. Uncle Milton being my Grandmother’s brother. They found Grandpa Carey in Indianapolis, being married again, and Stoughten Auphen, Pa’s half brother was a year old, “Stoats” Stoughten’s mother dying a few years after, and Grandpa Carey came on out to Missouri, and married a woman by the name of Harmon. Living with her until he died about the year 1870 to 75 at Otterville, Missouri, where my Father lived from the time Uncle Milton arrived in Missouri with them. Pa and his mother making their home with him and his family.

Pa being a merchant in Otterville for many years, moving with his family to Sedalia in 1874, where he continued the general merchandise business, until he died at Sedalia, Missouri December 30, 1902.

Pa had one other Brother, William Boatright, who lived in Indianapolis until he died 19__, aged about 70 years.

This is all so far as known, except of later date which my Brother Dave or Sister have already stated.

E. F. Boatright”

There is no Craneys Island in the mouth of the Roanoke River insofar as is known, and the river mouth is in North Carolina. However, there is a Craney Island in Chesapeake Bay, North of Portsmouth, Virginia and a battle was fought there in the War of 1812.

9-484. DAVID HARRISON BOATRIGHT (CHARLES FRANKLIN9, CARY HARRISON8, JOHN JOSEPH7, DANIEL6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 25 Mar 1859 in Otterville, Cooper County, Missouri, and died 12 Mar 1939 in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. He married ROSE CASSIDY 1888 in Winslow, Navajo County, Arizona. She was born Jul 1857 in Rhode Island, and died 1931 in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

Notes for DAVID HARRISON BOATRIGHT:

David Harrison Boatright, son of Charles Franklin Boatright and Sarah Frances Butler Boatright, was born on Monday, 25 March, 1859 at Otterville, Cooper County, Missouri.

David Harrison died on Sunday, 12 March 1939 at Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery at Albuquerque.

David Harrison received his education in the public schools of Otterville and Sedalia, Missouri, his father moving the family from Otterville to Sedalia in 1875.

After completing his schooling, David Harrison became an employee in the shops of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company at Sedalia, where he learned the painter’s trade, which he followed for a number of years. He later moved to Parsons, Labette County, Kansas where he was in charge of the paint shops of the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

In March of 1881 he went to Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, where he became an employee of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, and was in charge of that railroad’s paint shops, under Mr. G. E. Simmons, then the first master mechanic of the railroad.

About 1884 he returned to Sedalia, Missouri where he was associated with his father in the mercantile business for about a year.

He then returned to the west and the employ of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, working for them in Needles, California and Winslow, Arizona.

About 1888, David Harrison assumed a clerical position in the mercantile establishment of J. H. Breed at Winslow, remaining in this position until 1889 when he returned to Albuquerque and entered into business for himself.

His first store was a modest establishment to which he gave the name of “The Packet”. The business was conducted from the start on a cash basis and for small profits, and the methods followed were such as to insure a rapid and substantial expansion of the enterprise. In his first place of business he had but sixteen feet of shelving, his stock embracing dry goods and notions, and the concern being one which but served as the nucleous of the fine modern emporium which was there-from evolved.

His next place of business was of spacious dimensions, and well located, with the entrance from Gold Avenue and Second Street, the structure being in the form of an “L”. The main store was 25 by 80 feet, and the annex 20 by 50 feet, insuring ample accommodations for the extensive and comprehensive stock of dry goods, carpets, boots and shoes, etc. The store address was 118 West Gold Street.

David Harrison erected a nice residence in the Highlands section of Albuquerque at 220 South Edith Street.

He was a member of the Republican Party; a charter member of the Knights of Pythias of Albuquerque, and served as a trustee for the Knights of Pythias Sanatorium Association. He also was a member of the National Union; and a Commissioner of the New Mexico State Penitentiary at Santa Fe, New Mexico.
