He was born 1762 in Bedford County, Virginia, and died 17 Feb 1800 in Bedford County, Virginia.

Notes for ANNA BOATWRIGHT:

Anna Boatwright Wade applied for a Revolutionary War pension based on her husband, Joshua Wade's, service. She married Joshua Wade 11-2-1786 in Bedford County, Virginia by Rev. James Mitchell. Joshua died 2-17-1800 from an injury received from sliding on the ice. In November 1802 or 1803 Anna moved to Elbert County, Georgia "with her father William Boatright & family." On 7-19-1842 the Judge of the Inferior Court Franklin County, Georgia stated "she is too infirm from bodily affliction to attend Court." On 7-7-1843 she subscribed before the JP of Franklin County, Georgia that she was aged seventy nine and the widow of Joshua Wade. It is apparent she did not remarry. Anna's children made stmts supporting her application for Pension in Franklin County, Georgia 7-19-1842 "...On their oaths they say that they were well acquainted with Joshua Wade now deceased and Anna Wade his widow in Bedford County State of Virginia before the time and at the death of the said Joshua Wade who was killed by an injury rec'd by sliding upon the ice, and a few years after the death of the said Joshua Wade the said Anna Wade his widow moved with her father William Boatright & family to the State of Georgia and settled in Elbert County. She has since removed to Franklin County State of Georgia where she now resides. The following Bedford County persons signed affidavits supporting her application: John Hudnal, James Echolls, Mary B. Ryan, David Gibbs, Mason Robinson, & Garnett Lee. The following Campbell County persons signed affidavits supporting her application: Robert Stevens, John Prebble. Source: Norman Hurd Ricker

Anna Boatwright Wade was born 6-7-1764, married in Bedford County, Virginia to Joshua Wade on 11-2-1786. Anna had 4 children by Joshua Wade; she widowed in Virginia, joined her father in Hart County, Georgia, ca 1803. She died 6-18-1848/49 and is buried in Providence Church Cemetery, Hart County, Georgia. Source: Norman Hurd Ricker

Burial: Providence Church Cemetery, Hart County, Georgia

Notes for JOSHUA WADE:

Joshua Wade fought in Revolutionary war as a Private (14 years old). He was mentioned in the book "DAR Patriot Index" on page 708. He was pensioned.

The following letter was found in Ova Phillips personal possessions after her death. With the letter was a note from "Wilma to Gussie" date 15 March 1982.

I have no idea as to when or from whom Leila received the information I am copying below for you. It was typed on paper that has become quite yellow and brittle.

The dates which follow were obtained from papers on file in pension claim W.6388, based upon service in the Revolutionary War of Joshua Wade.

While residing in Bedford County, Virginia, Joshua Wade enlisted about Mar, 1777, with his brothers Isaac and Jacob Wade, served three years as a private in Captain George Lambert's Guss Scruggs' and Lewis' Virginia Companies, was in battles of Brandywine and Germantown; enlisted Oct 10, 1780, served four months as a private in Captain Philips Webber's Company; enlisted in March 1781, served two months in Captain's Calloway's Company, Colonel Lynch's Virginia regiment, was in battle of Guilford, and enlisted in Sep 1781, served two months as private in Captain's Thomas Leftwich's Company and was at the surrender of Cornwallis.

Joshua Wade died Feb 17. 1800 in Bedford County. Virginia. Joshua Wade married Nov 2, 1786 in Bedford County Virginia, Anna Boatwright of William Boatwright.

In 1802 or 1803, the soldier's widow, Anna Wade moved with her father and family to Elbert County, Georgia, and later to Franklin County, Georgia. Joshua's widow, Anna, was allowed pension on her application executed July 19, 1842, at which time she was aged seventy eight years and a resident of Franklin County Georgia.

It is stated in 1842, that Joshua Wade had two or three children (the names are not shown). John B. and Polly Wade were residing in Franklin County Georgia in 1842, and Polly was still a resident there in 1845. No relationship to the soldier was stated.

Anna Wade, widow of Joshua Wade A. D. Haller
Veterans Administration, Washington D.C.

Family tradition has it that Joshua's death resulted from a broken neck suffered when he collided with a fence while on a slide improvised from a kitchen chair that he and his sons were riding down a hill after an ice storm.

John B. Wade and his brother, James Wade, both of whom were Methodist preachers, and Polly Wade, sister of Elizabeth, or Betty Wade as she was called, sister to John B. Wade and wife of Tavener Rucker... on Christmas Eve 1815, erected a log house which was the first church house at Providence, and that Polly and Betty carried up one corner of the house.

Rev. John B. Wade was the son of Anna Wade. She had children and came from Virginia and settled in what was then Franklin County Georgia and was later Hart County, Georgia.

Anna Wade was buried in the cemetery at Providence and her grave is marked by a splendid rock vault, which bears the following inscription: "Anna Wade, Died June 18, 1849, age 84". It is evident from this inscription that she was born Abt. 1764.

Rev John B. Wade is buried at Providence. We do not have the date of his death. Held pastorate at New Hope and Macedonia. Rude temples of worship in many places sprang into existance at the call of this good man, blooming like wildfowlers along the woodland paths.

WILLIAM BOATWRIGHT (WILLIAM6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 1774 in St. Pauls Parish, Hanover County, Virginia, and died 21 Feb 1851 in Pickens County, South Carolina. 1817 - Deed 3-29-1817, rec 1-29-1824 from Charles Crump to William Boatright both of Elbert County in consideration of $354 conveys Lots 10 & 11 in the 5000 acres reserved on Shoal Creek in Franklin County containing 100 acres each. Pg 437, Deeds to Franklin County, GA 1784-1826.

1823 - Deed 12-9-1823 recorded 8-8-1825 from William Boatright of Franklin County to James Isbell of Pendleton District SC in consideration of $700, conveys 200 acres in Franklin Co known as Lots 10 & 11 in the 5000 tract of Academy land. Deeds of Franklin Co GA 1784-1826.

1825 - Estate Returns for Richard Tynor Sr for 1825, Will Bk N (Old No.), Pg 152, show receipts of William Boatright in right of his wife Elizabeth, of John Bird in right of his wife MarthaB, and of Elijah Bird Guardian of Sarah, Martha, Nancy and Mary Bird orphans of Billings B Bird and Charity Bird. Also receipts of David Dobbs, atty. for Richard Tyner for fees and expenses establishing the claim and collecting money which was appropriated to said Tyner for Rev. claim for property lost in the war between the U.S. and Great Brittain. Wm Bailey and Isham Teasley, Executors. (GA DAR, Historical Col Vol III pg 113)

At the time he applied for War 1812 Pension, he applied from Clarksville GA by Proxy, resident Elbert County when served according to his statements, but his home of record was in Pickins County SC. His affidavit stated his age in 1850 was 76. Pension Papers in Docmt Section. (Bedford Co VA 1787 Tax List shows a William Boughtright age 21+ with son born 1766-1771 (age 16-21), believed to be William Boatright Sr & Jr. The affidavit supporting Wm born 1774 was submitted by Thomas I. Hughes of Clarksville, Habersham County GA, who could have errored preparing the affidavit for Wm's signature. Wm b 1744 could have errored when reporting Wm Jr's age for the tax; not likely as the error reporting him age 16-21 would have cost him tax, and if he was age 13 there was no tax. Another possibility is an error by the tax recorder; not likely as Wm Sr would have protested the extra tax required. Most likely is the possibility Thomas Hughes errored preparing the affidavit and Wm Jr was born before 1771. The last possibility is that Wm b ca 1774 is not a son of William born 1744.)

William's Will was dated 10-27-1850 and proved 2-21-51. Wife was Elizabeth at time of will.

Notes for CLARISSA WADE:

Clarissa Boatwright Verses Thomas Boatwright – Petition for Divorce 1828

To the Honorable Thomas Stuart, Judge of the 4th Judicial Circuit of the State of Tennessee. By her next of kin, Obediah Wade, the petition of Clarissa Boatwright of the County of Williamson, and State of Tennessee, humbly complaining, showeth to your honor that about sixteen years ago she entered marriage with Thomas Boatwright with whom she lived for about the space of four years during which time she upon all occasions and in all times conducted herself with strict propriety and decorum discharging the duties incumbent on her as a wife with fidelity, affection and attention at the expiration of the time aforesaid her said husband Thomas Boatwright then residing in this county of Rutherford County the land upon which they then lived in lying in both counties, willful and maliciously and without any reasonable cause deserted and absented himself from the bed and board and domicile of the petitioner, leaving her incumbered with a family of children and with little or no property to support them. Your petitioner farther states that after the aforesaid willful and malicious abandonment of your petitioner by said Thomas, and after the expiration of eight or nine years, he returned to join petitioner with protestations of love and affection promising to remain and abide with her, thereby inducing your petitioner again to live and remain with him. Your petitioner further states that the said Thomas after his said return, as aforesaid, remained with your petitioner not longer than two or three months, that time being sometime in January 1826, the said Thomas again willfully and maliciously without reasonable cause deserted and abandoned your petitioner and continues still to desert and abandon your petitioner, for more than two years before filing their petition, without reasonable cause. Your petitioner states that during the last time said Thomas remained with her as before stated she conducted herself with strict decency and propriety and discharged the duties incumbent on her with fidelity and attention. Your petitioner stated that she was at the time of her marriage except a small part of the time when she resided in Giles County, Tennessee and has ever since remained a citizen of this county and state, and has been and remained a citizen of this county twelve months previous to the filing of this bill and yet is a citizen of this county.

Your petitioner therefore prays in consigns of the aforesaid willful and malicious abandonment of the said Thomas that she be divorced from said Thomas. That the subpoena issue for said Thomas returnable to the next term of this court commanding him to appear and answer the petition, and that a final decree for the dissolution of the bonds of matrimony between her and the said Thomas may be made, and that she may be returned to all rights privileges and indemnities of a free sole.
