Boat(w)right Family Genealogy in America

Generation 7

7-19. MARY R. BOATWRIGHT (JOHN7, JOHN6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born Abt. 1797 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and died Bef. 1880 in Franklin County, Virginia. She married ROBERT E. POWELL 28 Dec 1824 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, son of ROBERT POWELL and CATHERINE TUGGLE. He was born Abt. 1773 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and died 1856 in Franklin County, Virginia.

Notes for MARY R. BOATWRIGHT:

Per Bob Powell, 2nd Great Grandson: Mary was Robert Powell Jr's. second wife, 20 years his junior. One of Bob's cousins showed him a picture of Mary Boatwight Powell taken about 1870. She died in the 1870's. She was working outside in a simple farmers wife dress. Her face seemed to be of a woman who had seen a lot of tragedy, sad but compassionate.

Children of MARY BOATWRIGHT and ROBERT POWELL are:

        i. JULIA A. POWELL, b. 1826, Virginia.

       ii. BENJAMIN RITTENHOUSE POWELL, b. 1829, Virginia; d. 09 Jul 1857.

      iii. WILLIAM POWELL, b. 1833, Virginia; d. 1929.

       iv. PHILEMON S. POWELL, b. 1834, Virginia; d. 1854.

        v. MARY JANE POWELL, b. 1834, Virginia.

vi. ELIZABETH POWELL, b. 1839, Virginia.

vii. JOHN ROBERT POWELL, b. 1840, Virginia.

viii. JUDITH POWELL, b. 1841, Virginia.

7-20. WILLIAM BOATWRIGHT (JOHN7, JOHN6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 1799 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and died 1846 in New Canton, Buckingham County, Virginia. He married CAROLINE SADLER Abt. 1821 in Buckingham County, Virginia, daughter of SAMUEL SADLER and JANE. She was born 1806 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, and died Bef. 1880 in Marshall, Buckingham County, Virginia.

Notes for WILLIAM BOATWRIGHT:

The following information was provided by Tim J. McCoy of Austin, Texas, a direct descendant of John Boatwright:

1840 Buckingham Co., VA Census, Northern District, Page 358: William Boatwright.
1 male under 5, 1 male 10 & under 15, 1 male 15 & under 20, 1 male 40 & under 50
1 female under 5, 1 female 30 & under 40
2 male slaves under 10, 2 female slaves under 10, 1 female slave 10 & under 24
11 total persons, 3 in agriculture, 2 in maufacture & trades Order of enumeration: Henry V. Hudgins, Frederick B. Scruggs, Reuben Boatwright Jr., Edward D. Boatwright, William Boatwright, Mary Johnson, Susan R. Toney.

The Buckingham Land Tax Summaries & Implied Deeds show: William "Boatright" in 1826 owned 382 acres adjacent to Putney and Ross (25E). In 1827, William sold 155 acres adjacent to E. Putney (25E) to George K. Anderson; also, 246 acres to Cary Duncan. Our family story states Abyhugh, son of William, was raised on a plantation and farm called "Apple Grove". This has also been documented by Allie Jewell Boatwright Green in a letter to Carolyn Boatwright Rice.

In 1841, a Poll was held at Buckingham County Court House for a member of Congress. John Hill and E.W. Hubbard were running against each other. William "Boatright" of New Canton is listed on the Early Extant Poll List.

The 1850 Buckingham Co., VA Census, line 462, shows Caroline as head of household. I believe William died about 1848 according to family story that Abyhugh was about 12 years of age when William died. The 1850 census also lists Samuel J., Monroe, "Abihu", Martha E., Judith J and Willie A. L. The 2 older sons, Thomas had his own family and farm in Buckingham Co. and John Edwin had moved his family to Mississippi.

According to Eleanor Davies, granddaughter of Letitia Boatwright, William was known to his nieces and nephews as "Uncle Billy". Eleanor is age 92 (4/20/2002) and still very sharp. She said she really didn't remember him but her mother had spoken of him. Eleanor told this to Samuel J. Boatwright, great great grandson of William Boatwright.

Buckingham County's courthouse burned in 1869 destroying records.

According to Roger Bates Boatwright, William Boatwright & Caroline Sadler had 12 children...4 of whom died in infancy.

Notes for CAROLINE SADLER:

The following information was provided by Tim J. McCoy of Austin, Texas, a direct descendant of John Boatwright:

Caroline's father was Samuel Sadler, son of William. There is a Samuel H. Sadler in Fluvanna Co., VA which is a brother.

Caroline Sadler Boatwright, in 1848, bought 50 acres on Glover Road (20E) from John G. Norvell. "(20E)" means 20 miles east of Buckingham County Court House. Source: Buckingham County Land Tax Summaries & Implied Deeds, 1841-1870, Volume 3.

Caroline is listed in the August 4, 1870 Census, Marshall, Buckingham Co., VA living with son, Frederick Monroe Boatwright. Her age is stated as 60 which probably is incorrect. She is shown with $1000 real property & $300 personal property values. The 1870 Agricultural Census for Buckingham Co. shows: BOATWRIGHT, Caroline with 50 acres of improved land, 100 acres of unimproved woodland, $1,000 cash value of farm, $20 cash value of implements & machinery, District: Marshall, page 5, line 24.

There is a deed, of Caroline Sadler Boatwright selling two parcels of land for $800 to her daughter, Judith Jane Boatwright, in Buckingham Co., VA dated August 19, 1879. The first tract contained 40 acres & the second 84 acres. The land was originally inherited by Caroline from her deceased father, Samuel "Saddler". The parcels adjoined the lands of Peter Burress & Estate of William Miller, deceased. I believe Caroline died shortly after August 19, 1879 and before the 1880 Census was enumerated.

Notes for REUBEN BOATWRIGHT:

Note that Reuben's death record below states his mother's name was "Mary E. Boatwright" and wife's name was "Eunice Boatwright". Neither of these names match Reuben's mother, Jerusha Penick Boatwright, or his wife, Margaret Susan Carter. I believe the record noted below is the correct death record for Reuben, but for some reason does not match up with wife and mother. Perhaps the handwriting on the original record is bad and the names have been misinterpreted. "Jerusha" which is unusual, may have been interpreted as "Eunice". Perhaps Margaret Susan Carter gave her mother's name (Elizabeth could be Mary Elizabeth) instead of Reuben's mother. Perhaps a son or daughter or son-in-law or daughter-in-law or even a neighbor provided the information incorrectly.

Lived close to "Kent's Store", and was the son of John Boatwright.
