I just happened on a memorial funeral card for Nancy Minerva Boatright. It was found by Joe Griffin in Pineville NC who is descended from Margaret Ann Boatright Howard who married Jonathan M. Howard. He found 2 such cards in his grandmother's effects, one for Margaret Howard and one for Nancy Minerva Boatright. I have looked for over 10 years for her dates. Margaret is buried in the Pineville Cemetery which is non church related and there may be a way to see if Minerva is buried there as well. - Billie Ranson

Bottle is artifact from Mooresville's past
By O.C. Stonestreet

Last week, I wrote about a soft drink with something of a cult following, Blenheim Ginger Ale, a proud product of the Palmetto State . Some months ago, I wrote about a whiskey jug that came from the Key Distillery of Statesville. This week’s story concerns another beverage container, a soft drink bottle manufactured for a Mooresville business soon after the turn of the last century.

The clear glass, 7 ounce, 8½ inch-tall bottle is owned by John Johnson, 48, of Ridge Avenue , Mooresville, who purchased it four years ago.

“There was an estate sale at an old store on Highway 64, east of Statesville ,” he said. “The bottle was in with a group of straight-sided Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottles. I paid, I think, $200 for the four or five bottles.”

Johnson said he has been a bottle collector for about 15 years and confesses, “I wish I had started earlier.”

Like many collectors, he has other collecting interests as well, including automobilia, advertising items and car license plates. He has one North Carolina tag for each year, starting with 1913. Besides soft drink bottles, he also collects local milk bottles.

As to the Mooresville soft drink bottle, I asked him what it might be worth, and he replied that one very much like it, but tinted green, recently sold on eBay for $200, so he felt confident his was worth at least that much, but since it was made in Mooresville, his hometown, he says he wouldn’t think about selling it.

The embossed letters on the bottle read: “REGISTERED MOORES-VILLE BOTTLING WORKS MOORESVILLE, N C THIS BOTTLE NOT TO BE SOLD.”

On the bottom of the bottle is the number 36.

I asked Johnson what the “not-to-be-sold” business was about.

“I have no idea,” he confided. “It’s the only soda bottle in my collection of about 200 bottles that has that on it.”

A little research in the library reveals more about the Mooresville Bottling Works, an early Mooresville industry.

The Mooresville Bottling Works began operation in fall 1906. The Oct. 12, 1906, Mooresville Enterprise, the predecessor of the Mooresville Tribune, carried the following notice under “The Bottling Works.”

“The Mooresville Bottling Works, Mr. T. J. Boatright, proprietor, began business last week and prospects are bright for a good business. Mr. Boatright came here from Hickory where he has been in the business of bottling soft drinks and he has had several years experience along this line. He is putting up a splendid line of goods including soda waters, for which he has quite a reputation, ginger ales, sarsaparillas, fruit juices, etc. He is enjoying a good trade from our merchants and those in our nearby towns.”

The next reference to the firm came from the March 23, 1911, Enterprise, which tells us, “The Mooresville Bottling Works, which was owned and operated for several years by Mr. Boatright, changed hands last week, when the business was purchased by Mr. F. H. Wallace, who will continue to run at the same stand. Mr. Boatright is very much attached to our city, but has decided to locate at some other point. By this change, Mr. Wallace has a fine field for the disposition of his output.”

D. P. Waters, writing in his 1914 booklet, “Iredell County and Mooresville, N.C.,” tells more: “About three years ago Mr. F. H. Wallace purchased this business, which had been then in operation five years. Mr. Wallace at once began to improve the plant and extend the trade, and his efforts have been successful in a marked degree. Besides greatly enlarging the building occupied by the works, he has also greatly increased the output and added many new and popular beverages to meet the demands of a growing trade.

“A handsome auto-truck of 30 horsepower and costing $1,500 is owned by Mr Wallace and two sons who are also interested in the business, thus ensuring quick delivery to numerous customers at Davidson, Cornelius, and other points in this section.

“The quality of these bottled goods are in every way equal to any on the market, and include Mint Cola, orange and grape juleps, and all kinds of high class carbonated drinks. The plant has a daily capacity of 200 cases, or 4,800 bottles.”

The last reference found comes from the “Local Briefs” column of the June 30, 1921, Enterprise .

“The Mooresville Bottling Works is an institution that has been revived within the past few weeks, after being out of commission for two years. Mr. F. H. Wallace, the manager, has started up his works again in the store room near the Mooresville Furniture Factory, where the Boatright bottling works once were.”

How much longer the bottling works operated is unknown. Many businesses that had sugar as a main ingredient went bankrupt during the First World War and the accompanying sugar shortage.

The Mooresville Furniture Factory was located on North Main Street on the right side of the intersection with Mackey Street . Bernice Melchor, who lives across the street, believes the bottling works was probably located on the left (south) side of the North Main/Mackey Street intersection, a site later occupied by Shimpock’s store.

Melchor’s thinking was confirmed by the 1914 Sanborn Insurance Map of Mooresville.

I wonder if anyone has a photo of the Mooresville Bottling Works or has more information on this early business. I would like to know more, and so would John Johnson.
