He was in the Confederate Army and was killed in the Civil War on April 6, 1865, in the cause of the South, as recorded in the Family Bible. According to the newspaper article of his mother's death, he was killed in the war. His body was not brought back, and there is no Confederate marker for him in the Judson Cemetery.

9-194. HIRAM GILMORE BOATWRIGHT (JOHN MARTIN9, ANDREW DRURY8, LEWIS7, WILLIAM6, THOMAS5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 16 Oct 1849 in Henry County, Alabama, and died 27 Oct 1883 in Judson, Henry County, Alabama. He married ELIZABETH "LIZZIE" IDA BIRD, daughter of JOHN BIRD and MARY LASSETER in 1880. She was born 09 Oct 1865 in Attapulgus, Decatur County, Georgia, and died 25 Oct 1922 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.
Notes for HIRAM GILMORE BOATWRIGHT:
Hiram Gilmore Boatwright (1849-1883), second son of John and Eunica Boatwright was born and grew up in the Judson Community. According to Mrs. Nola Snead, a resident of Abbeville for many years, he was a very handsome and popular young man. Hiram married Lizzie Ida Bird, the oldest daughter of Dr. John S. Bird and Mary Jordan Lasseter in 1880. They had two sons, Kyle Andrew and John Simmons. Hiram died suddenly and mysteriously in 1883 at the age of 34. During the short time they were married, they lived first with his parents and then in a little house near the Judson Cemetery where John Simmons was born. Kyle Andrew was born in the home of his grandparents, John and Eunica Boatwright. Kyle never talked much about his father since he was only three years of age when he died and he didn't remember his father. Hiram Gilmore, no doubt, was the apple of his father's eye, since John Boatwright had lost his other three sons. One was killed in the Civil War and the other two died young. Hiram had his own horse and carriage and rode about the community sparking all the young ladies. No record has been found, but it has been said by some that he was a school teacher, teaching in some of the three-month schools in the County. He died at the age of 34 and is buried in the Judson Church Cemetery near his parents.

Notes for SAVILITY McCATHON and her sister, CALLIE KNIGHT:
The family story is that Hiram had a child (Charles) out of weblock with Savility and another child (Claude) out of wedlock with Savility's sister, Callie Knight. Savility was a servant for John and Eunica Boatwright (Hiram's parents). John and Eunica would not permit the marriage of Hiram and Savility.

Lizzie Ida Bird Boatwright lived in the County with her two young sons after her husband's death in 1883 until 1889 when she went to live with her father, Dr. John S. Bird in Montgomery, Alabama. She took her youngest son, John Simmons with her and left Kyle Andrew with his Boatwright grandparents. After she had been in Montgomery for a while, Lizzie married Mr. S. L. Cox. After Mr. Cox died, Lizzie lived her son John S. and his family. They had a home at 661 Mildred Street in Montgomery, Alabama. Lizzie was a good seamstress and was always making clothes for her grandchildren. She was good at crocheting and made a crocheted piece for each of her granddaughters. Lizzie died on October 25, 1922 at the age of 57 and is buried with her second husband in the same grave in Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.
Lizzie's mother, Mary Jordan Lasseter Bird died in 1875 when Lizzie was about 10 years old. She was living with her father, Dr. John Bird and his second wife, Mary Jane Boatwright Bird, when she met and fell in love with her stepmother's brother, Hiram Gilmore Boatwright. He was much older than she was - she was less than 15 years of age (14 1/2) when they married. In 1883, when she was just seventeen years old, Lizzie was left a widow with two small sons. The following account of her husband's death was carried in the Abbeville Times dated November 2, 1883: "Mr. Gilmore Boatwright, who lived in the Hilliardsville settlement, died very suddenly last week. He complained of feeling unwell and at the usual hour went to bed. He complained of feeling unwell and at the usual hour went to bed. During the night, his wife, going to his bedside, found him dead." The Boatwright and Bird families continued to live near each other for the next six years. It is believed that Lizzie and her two sons, Kyle and John S., were back and forth, sometimes staying with her family (the Birds) and sometimes her husband's (the Boatwrights). However, in 1889, when Dr. Bird and his family moved to Montgomery to live, Lizzie and her youngest son, John S., also went to Montgomery to live. Kyle remained in Henry County with his Boatwright grandparents, "Old Pap" and "Old Mother".

06 May 1856 in Henry County, Alabama, and died in 13 Jan 1928 in Headland, Henry County, Alabama.
She married JOHN SIMMONS BIRD 30 Jan 1877 in Hilliardsville, Henry County, Alabama, son
of GRISSOM COFIELD BIRD and MARGARET CLARY. He was born 04 Jul 1839 in Ochessee,
Calhoun County, Florida, and died 24 Aug 1899 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.
Mary Jane Boatwright (1856-1928), the oldest daughter of John and Eunica Boatwright was a
lifetime resident of the Judson Community in Henry County, Alabama except for about
sixteen years. She married Dr. John S. Bird, a widower with four young children: Lizzie
Ida (who later married Hiram Boatwright - the brother of Mary Jane), Gressom, Xima Yulee
and Harrell Tonge. She was only 21 years of age when she met and married Dr. Bird in
1877. He was a physician who had been living in Columbia, Alabama but had come to upper
Henry County to practice medicine. His first wife, Mary Jordan Lasseter, had died in
Columbia on August 11, 1875, and is buried there. Dr. Bird and his first wife were
cousins - her mother and his father were brother and sister. All the children of Dr.
Bird and his first wife were born in Attapulgus, Georgia at the home of their grandfather,
John Lasseter, except the youngest son, Harrell Tonge, who was born in Columbia, Alabama
on March 27, 1874. Dr. John Bird and Mary Jane Boatwright Bird were married at her home
in Hilliardsville on January 30, 1877 by Julius W. Malone. They had three sons; John
Jones, Albert Curtis and William Allen Thurman. She and Dr. Bird went to Montgomery to
live in 1889. Dr. Bird died in 1899 at the age of 60 and Mary Jane returned to Henry
County in the latter part of 1906 or early 1907 and lived in the Judson Community until
she died in 1928.

9-197. REUBIN ARCANNIE BOATWRIGHT (JOHN MARTIN9, ANDREW DRURY8, LEWIS7, WILLIAM6, THOMAS5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born
1861 in Henry County, Alabama, and died 1902 in Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas. She married
FRANCIS L. WOODS. He was born Nov 1854 in Alabama.
Reubin Arcannie Boatwright (1861-1902), second oldest daughter and youngest child of John
and Eunica Boatwright was born in the Judson Community of Henry County and lived with her
parents until sometime after 1891. During the 1880s, she was active in the County
affairs. She organized and taught school in the County under the three-month program.
She had her horse and buggy in which she rode around over the County. During the week,
she boarded in the community where she worked, and went home on the weekend. One of her
schools was at Hardwicksburg and another at Armstrong Academy in Beat 5. Her name was
often in the news as Secretary of the Henry County Farmers Alliance. She was called
Cannie and Miss R. A. Boatwright. Suddenly, her name appeared no more in the Abbeville
newspapers after 1891. It is assumed that she probably married the last part of 1891 and
went to live in Texas. There is no record of her marriage in the Henry County Marriage
Records or in her mother's Family Bible, so she must have left the County before she
married. Kyle Boatwright was very fond of his Aunt Cannie. He was very close to her as
a young child in the home of his grandparents, John and Eunica Boatwright, whom he called
"Old Pap" and "Old Mother". Kyle was left fatherless at the age of 3 and his mother left
him when he was nine years old and went to live in Montgomery, Alabama. He never went to
school or had any formal education, but Aunt Cannie taught him at home. She carried his
around with her as she traveled around in her horse and buggy. Sometime after she died
in 1902, Kyle went to Texarkana to see her family. He brought back pictures of her
husband, Mr. Woods, and her two children, Belva Arcannie and Lumuel Woods, standing near
her grave. No mention of her coming back to the County to visit her folks has been found
in the Abbeville newspapers. She died in Texarkana, Texas in 1902 at the age of 41 and
is buried there.

Children of DRURY BOATWRIGHT and JULIA RIVERS are: 9-203. SARAH C. BOATWRIGHT (GEORGE R.9, LEWIS8, LEWIS7, WILLIAM6, THOMAS5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born
1862 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
9-204. WILLIAM MANLY BOATWRIGHT (SAMUEL LUCAS9, LEWIS8, LEWIS7, WILLIAM6, THOMAS5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born
13 Dec 1852 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, and died 23 Jun 1937 in Gulledge, Anson
County, North Carolina. He married (1) JULIA ANNE DAVIS 1870 in Chesterfield County, South
Carolina, daughter of JOHN DAVIS and CHARLOTTE HURST. She was born 20 Mar 1849 in
Chesterfield County, South Carolina, and died 27 Sep 1911 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
He married (2) LOTTIE MAY WILLIAMS 1912 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, daughter
of REASON WILLIAMS and JANE RICKETTS. She was born 04 Jul 1888 in Chesterfield
County, South Carolina, and died 02 Sep 1920 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He married
(3) SUSAN JULIA DAVIS 1921 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, daughter of
ISHAM DAVIS and MARY. She was born 20 Aug 1872 in Chesterfield County, South
Carolina, and died 01 Nov 1957 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Grandpa Bill, as my father called him, outlived all three of his wives. When he was
progressing in years some of the family asked him which wife he was going to be buried with.
After a short pause he replied that to keep peace within the family he would be buried with
old Shep, his dog, instead of with any of his wives. As fate would have it Grandpa Bill died
before old Shep. When old Shep died the family went to fulfill Grandpa Bill's wishes but
found out that it is illegal to bury a dog in a human cemetery in the state of North
Carolina. Grandpa Bill's grave is in the corner of the cemetery, near the fence, so they
buried old Shep just outside the fence... fulfilling Grandpa Bill's request.
