Nanny Upchurch married James Edward Brown. They were my Granny and Granddaddy.
They had four children: Claud, the oldest and my father. Pearl and Maud were the two girls; Aunt Pearl was a good hearted woman married to a good timing man. Both girls died of cancer. Earl, the youngest child, was the first in our family to go to college. I always thought that Daddy would have been a better candidate, but Earl was the one who went. After graduation, Earl ran small stores and filling stations. One night he was robbed, taken into the woods, shot and killed.
Grandma Boatright, my mother's mother, said her father hid during the Civil War. He said it was "a rich man's war and a poor man's fight." She went to Texas as a little girl in a covered wagon, but soon returned to Mississippi.
Fanny Hensley, this was Grandma's maiden name, married Newton Boatright and they had ten children. All are dead except Uncle Mal, Malcolm Argyle. The Boatrights, the Browns, the Upchurches and these Hensleys were all farmers.
Grandma Boatright was a great reader. I don't know that she read the best books, but she read. She named most of her children after the characters in the novels she read. She named one boy Oli Early. The kids use to tease him by saying, "Oli Early, prettiest girlie in the worldie." That's almost as bad as naming a boy Sue.
Grandma and Grandpa Boatright produced ten children. They were: Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Stephens (Bud), Malcolm Argyle, Elton, Mark, Oli Early (Oil), Cordis Newton, Audie, Bessie and Connie Mae. Connie Mae was the youngest child and she was my mother. I don't know much about Grandpa Boatright, except he couldn't read or write. He had a brother named Milledge who also couldn't read or write. Newton spelled his name Boatright, but Milledge spelled his name Boatwright.
When Grandpa and Grandma came to Chicago so Grandpa could get a good job, Grandma couldn't go around the block without getting lost, but Grandpa could easily travel about the entire city. So you see, being literate wasn't everything.
Grandpa Boatright died while we were in Arizona. Grandma Boatright had a stroke and was paralyzed; she died several years later. One of the daughters wanted to claim her teeth before she was dead, but Mother put a stop to that.
Claud Addison Brown was born on September 15, 1897, on a farm near the town of Water Valley, Mississippi. Being the son of a farmer, he learned to do all the chores about the farm from gathering eggs to plowing with a team of mules.
Farming came first, school second. He loved to read, but work had to come first. He was also good in math. He went to the tenth grade, then he dropped out of school altogether. School was not as important then as it is now. A person with little or no education could make quite a decent living. Grandpa Boatright proved this. He couldn't read or write, but he could farm and work in a meat market.
When World War I came, and America declared war on Germany, Daddy volunteered for the army. When he was through with basic training, the army granted him a leave of so many days. But the army changed its mind and cancelled their leaves; the men were to return at once. Daddy ignored the summons.
The army summoned the men a second time, and this time Daddy responded to the call and returned to his outfit. There were some who ignored the second call and they went to prison. Daddy had to spend a few days in the guard house. He went to France and trained in artillery, but he never saw action. Had he responded to the army's first call, and had he not spent some time in the guardhouse, he would have probably been on the front line. He did get to go to Paris where he drank too much champagne and was dreadfully sick. Daddy was discharged with the rank of Corporal.
After the war, he returned to the farm. Times were good, and he had silk shirts and wore fine clothes. He began courting Connie Mae Boatright, his future wife and my mother.
Connie Mae Boatright, as born October 24, 1906. She was the youngest of ten children. She was spoiled by her seven brothers and was the pet of the family. She learned how to do all the chores that farm girls performed at the time. Her work was mainly housework, though she did learn how to hoe and milk cows.
When Mother reached her teens, she no longer cared about school; she had another interest - boys. She quit school after she finished eighth grade.
She and Daddy met at an All Day Singing at Pine Flat. This is a church function where the people come together to sing hymns. At dinner time, the tables are loaded with an abundance of good food; fried chicken, watermelon, vegetables, preserves, pies and cakes.
One day Daddy said he would come to see her, but it was raining on that day so Mother knew he wouldn't come. But when she happened to look out the window, there he was, striding down the muddy road to her house.
They were married on June 18, 1922, at the church called Pine Flat. Daddy was twenty five and mother was fifteen. Such a marriage was not at all unusual in this time and place. After the marriage ceremony, daddy kissed his bride - that was their first kiss. Then he took his new wife to the new farm he had bought.
Daddy bought a 160 acre farm and a small four room house, and this is where he took his bride. There was no electricity, telephone, running water, plumbing, or radio. Except for the truck that Daddy owned, they were living as people lived in the nineteenth century. There was a wood stove for cooking and a fireplace for heat. But everyone they knew lived this way so they didn't think life was hard.
Daddy was good looking, but Mother was truly beautiful. When she was in her 60's she looked as pretty and young as her daughters. When I was a teenager, people would see us together and they would say, "You sure do have a beautiful sister." I was always a little exasperated by this remark, but Mother wasn't.

Notes for MAE BOATRIGHT:
Mae moved to Macon where she raised her family and lived for the balance of her life. She joined the Salvation Army in which her husband "E.L." was an officer. I remember her sons visiting with my grandmother, Lola, in Carroll County in the 1950's. Strangely, I don't remember her sons being around when I and my parents lived next door to her in Macon (1949-1950). My dad, Marvin, worked for a tiling contractor at the time. We lived in a poor section of town. Our house faced Broadway and some of the houses were abandoned. I never felt poor though I had the feeling that Aunt Mae was "better off". Her house had a tiny front yard facing a side street and she had some enormous (compared to the size of a 5 year old boy) hydrangeas. Her's were blue.

That's my grandma in her garden. She spent a lot of time there because her family worked up quite an appetite working their farm. It was only a little over 60 acres then but walking behind a mule over 60 hilly, rocky acres can take it out of you. She raised nearly every thing she put on her table. During the summer it was fresh and during the winter it was wonderfully preserved. Her life was full of labor but she had a ready smile and sweet disposition. She cooked on a wood stove for a long time.. seems like I was about 10 when she got an electric one. She made home-made blackberry and strawberry preserves. The closest approximation I can find today is Kroger for blackberry. She dipped Bruton Sweet snuff with a knife but she was fastidiously clean. I'd love to sit and talk with her again while she "snapped" green beans or crocheted a doilie.
Grandma is at the back of this picture. From the left foreground is her husband, Gordon,
Deborah Ball, Mark Chance, Joe Ball, Pat Ball and Howell Ball. I suspect that Howell and
Pat were sitting on the original bench that had been used at that table for decades. Lord
I remember those biscuits. So many that even after a large family had eaten all they
could hold there were still 10 or 12 for the hounds that waited patiently in the back
yard. The small kitchen with the wood stove is behind a wall behind the camera.
Grandma's front porch with my uncle Howell sitting on the steps. He was a very young
fellow when this was taken. The front room behind Howell's right shoulder is where I
first saw the light of day. The dirt road is behind the camera. The path was dirt. The
old porch holds so many wonderful memories for me...sitting there in the evening after
supper with the whole family, listening to the whipporwills in the woods across the
road. Howell and his wife Pat live on the property in a fine new home about 80 yards up
the hill from the house he was raised in.
