J.L. Reeder, atty for Plff. The plaintiff R.D. Boatright, states that he and the
defendant Debbie Boatright were married to each other in March, 1909; that Plaintiff
resides in Bell County, Kentucky, and has continuously resided there for more than
one year last past; that the cause for divorce hereinafter set out occurred in the
state of Kentucky, and within five years next before the institution of this suit.
Plaintiff says that he and the defendant lived together from their said marriage until the month of March 1910, at which time the defendant without fault or like fault on plaintiff's part, the defendant abandoned him and his and her home and has since time failed to return to him and still refuses so to do; that said abandonment as aforesaid has more than one years duration and continuous and he and she have not lived together nor cohabited since the separation aforesaid. Bride; Ider Ellar Morris is age 17 (she was actually about 14 years old) and born Jackson County Ky., and resides in Sand Gap, Ky. Grooms parents are J.P. Boatrite and Sarah. Wife's parents are Kimber Morris and Mary Jane Behymer. R.D. worked Rail Roading, Ida does House Work. Minister is D.H. Baker. Witness' present are Morgan Neeley and Mack Hays.
This marriage ended in divorce. Divorced before 1918. Ider was murdered in 1930 by her second husband.

PINEVILLE — Nancy Boatright, age 86, ceased her travels on this earth on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the Britthaven Nursing Facility.
Born February 20, 1924, at Oaks, Ky., she ws the daughter of the late Billy and Caroline Wilson. She was a member of the Elydale Primtive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Matt Boatright; brother, Jim Wilson; special friends, Coy and Lola Faye Gibbons.
Left to mourn her passing are the following members of her family: brother, Andrew Wilson of Lynchburg, Ohio; sister, Ruthie Jackson of Mainville, Ohio; two nephews, Andrew Wilson Jr., and Carlie Jackson Jr., both of Ohio; three nieces, Joline Witt, Carolyn Sue Wilson, and Vonda Strickland all of Ohio; a first cousin who she love like a natural brother, Elder Mickey Wilson and his wife Sheila of Middlesboro; two very special friends, Teresa Green "who served as caregiver" of Cubbage, and Media Sue Gibbons of Cubbage; and a young man she helped raise after the death of his mother, Ray Paul Wilder of Middlesboro.
Though Nancy did not have much of this worlds goods she was truly blessed with a large number of friends and neighbors in her community. She enjoyed visiting when she was physically able to do so.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with Elders, Mickey Wilson, Eugene Wilder, and Roger Price presiding. Music will be by Primitive Baptist Church singers.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cubbage Cemetery. Pallbearers will be P.C. Green, David Gibbons, Ray Paul Wilder, Chistopher Cox, Tyler Wilson, and Raymond Gibbons.

William Volney Boatright was born near Alma, Arkansas, and was the son of William Newton Boatright and Eugenia Garner, the second child in a family of ten children.
William finished the Van Buren schools in 1895 and enrolled in the Arkansas Industrial University in Fayetteville. After 3 1/2 years, he had to drop out for lack of money. He held several low paying jobs in the area until 1902 when he was appointed Chief Deputy of the Crawford County Sheriff's Office by Sheriff Jim Pitcock. He also served in this capacity under Sheriff Bill Garrett.
In 1904 his father died, leaving the mother with six minor children. "This sad bereavement placed the family responsibility on me, " he recalled, and he began to look for increased income.
In 1906 he was elected County Clerk and served two terms. Upon the completion of his second term, he established a general real estate business in Van Buren and was quite successful. He was one of the organizers of the Van Buren Trust Company in 1911 and served as director until 1913 when the company was consolidated with Citizen's Bank, where he also served as a director. In 1919 he was elected vice-president and remained in this position until 1934 when he was appointed District Supervisor of the Home Owner's Loan Corporation. He was also associated with several other mortgage-lending institutions beginning in 1939.
In 1940 he moved his family across the river to Fort Smith.
In the early years of his marriage, William was a member of the First Baptist Church in Van Buren while his wife attended the Wood Memorial Christian Church. William eventually joined the Christian Church and after the move to Fort Smith, he and his wife joined the First Christian Church in that city. William served at various times as Deacon, Trustee, Elder, and Elder Emeritus.

One thing I remember my mother saying is that, "No man ever sat a horse like Billy
Boatwright", who she said referred to her grandfather, William Volney Boatwright.
But, I believe that she was in error thinking that he was her grandfather. William
Volney Boatwright was her mother's older brother, and her grandfather, William
Newton Boatwright died before my mother was born. The story above of William Volney
Boatwright explains how my mother could have been so wrong - William Newton
Boatwright died young, and William Volney Boatwright sort of raised his younger
brothers and sisters, so my mother must have assumed that he was her grandfather,

Lon Boatright, 79 years old, 120 Henry Street, died Monday, October 21, 1964 at Memorial hospital after a short illness. He was born March 8, 1884, in Van Buren, Arkansas and lived here all of his life. He was a member of the First Baptist church and was a painter and contractor.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Rosalie Boatright; a foster son, Billy of Tulsa; three brothers, Percy of Van Buren, W. V. of Fort Smith and Carl of Memphis; three sisters Mrs. G. Winfrey of California, Mrs. F. Anderson of Van Buren and Mrs. E. Covey of Fort Smith.
The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the First Baptist Church with Robert Morrison, officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.

Notes for PERCY ELMER BOATRIGHT:
Percy received his early schooling at the old Broadway School in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was unable to finish high school because of the death of his mother in 1907. He went to work for the Hunt and Ayres Furniture Store in Van Buren and in 1916 opened his own store. He ran this business for 17 years.
In 1935 he moved his furniture business to Fort Smith, but five years later sold out to the Arcade Furniture store. He worked for them until 1955 when he retired from the furniture business.
Upon his retirement, he went to work for the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce and served there for 17 years without pay, retiring in 1972.
Percy was a very active Baptist, a 32nd Degree Mason, and the only charter member of the Van Buren Rotary Club.

I questioned Lydia's S.S. number because it was not issued until after she married Grandpa Jim Curry in April of 1974. According to Carol Newland, Grandpa Curry did not ever draw Social Security. He worked before it was required. Grandma always used Grandpa Coyne's S.S. Number whenever she earned money while he was alive. She NEVER had her own number until she married Jim Curry. She still drew a S.S. check off of Grandpa Coyne's S.S. account because Jim did NOT receive a S.S. check. Jim had a retirement check from the fire department, civil service. He had Blue Cross & Blue Shield so they didn't need Medicare for health benefits. Grandma had medicare.

After Grandpa's heart attack, he had to quit working. When he filed for Social Security check, due to his disabililty, they had a great deal of difficulty with his birthdate being verified. The county offices in Bradleyville had burned. What they did to validate his birth date was to go to Bradleyville, the place of his birth. They found a school teacher who was still alive and remembered him. She found a registration list with Grandpa's signature at the young age of 8 years old. (Linda McKee, June 30, 1997)

Picher, Oklahoma - Jessie Mitchell Rhodes, 80, of Picher, Oklahoma, formerly of Columbus, died at 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, at Baptist Regional Health Center, Miami, Oklahoma, after an illness.
Mrs. Rhodes was born September 21, 1912, at Van Buren, Arkansas. She had lived the past 20 years in Picher. She previously lived at Columbus and worked several years in the laundry department at Maude Norton Memorial City Hospital. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church, Commerce.
Her first husband, John R. "Bob" Mitchell, died in 1970. Her second husband, LeeRoy Rhodes, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, John Robert Mitchell, Miami; Jack Eugene Mitchell, Cedar Point, Kansas, and Bobby Gene Mitchell, Leesville, Louisianna; two daughters, Polly Davis, Pineville, Missouri, and Peggy Lois Tharp, El Centro, California; a stepdaughter, Mary Jane Forbis, Miami; a sister, Pearl DeHoog, San Jose, California; 21 granchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday in the Paul Thomas Funeral Home chapel in Picher. The Rev. Viola Perdue officiated. Burial was in Lowell Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bruce Moore, Chester Hart, Marion Reece, Lloyd Divine and Captain Ross LeRoy Hudson.

James G. Milstead was the youngest of nine children. His date of birth was August 16, 1898. The only record of the event was the family bible which was destroyed in a house fire. When he served in the Army during World War II, his mother had to sign an affidavit attesting to his date of birth as there was no other documentation in existence. As he would have been one year too old to serve, his mother, at his request, attested that his year of birth was 1899. As a result, the year of birth as shown in his Army records is incorrect.
His given name was "Gilispie". He added the "J." himself at a young age and used the initials "J.G.". It is not exactly clear how, due to differing family memories, but the "J" evolved into James. Eventually, his nickname of "Buck" took precedence and that is what he was most often called by family and friends, though his wife called him "Jim" or "Jimmy". Occasionally, one of his older siblings could be heard calling him Gilispie, but that became rare as time went on.
He went to work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad on July 8, 1918, and worked for the railroad until he retired on August 16, 1964. At the outbreak of World War II he was General Mechanical Foreman at the Coffeyville, Kansas, yard. He was granted leave on August 6, 1943, to enter the Army Transportation Corps where he was commissioned a Captain in the Rail Division and was assigned as a Railway Master Mechanic, Fourth Transportation Zone, HQ, Atlanta, Georgia. The Fourth Zone included Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. He was responsible for the maintenance and repair of all rolling stock at installations within the zone. He was also responsible for 1054 government owned railway cars and 61 hospital cars. He was also personally responsible for the construction of a modern rail, heavy repair shop at Fort Benning, Georgia.
An article in the Atlanta Constitution during the war read as follows:
"Starting on September, 1944, with an old airplane hanger that was filled with obsolete
machinery, Major James G. Milstead, Fourth Zone Master Mechanic, who in civilian life had
served 29 years with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, has built this former shed into a modern
railroad repair shop.
In doing this, Major Milstead has saved the government thousands of dollars. He took some discarded rails that had once been used on Fort Benning's 60 centimeter railroad and used them for beams in building two new units for the shops. In making these new buildings he only used salvaged material. The only expense was $245 for glass.
Major Milstead has also installed a brass foundry in the shop. Brass bushings and fittings have been very scarce. The major salvaged enough brass around the camp to almost supply the foundry."
He received a promotion to Major on August 31, 1945, and was later separated from service in April of 1946. He was sent to Dupo, Illinois, by the Missouri Pacific and re-assigned to his position as General Mechanical Foreman until November 30, 1946, when he was recalled into the Army as an instructor in the Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Virginia. On May 1, 1947, he was discharged and sent to St. Louis, Missouri, by the railroad. A year later he was transferred to Alexandria, Louisiana, his home state, and worked there as General Mechanical Foreman until his retirement in 1964.
His grandson, David Cary Rains, was going to college across the river from Alexandria in Pineville from 1963-1967, and both during this time period and later, when he was a state policeman in the same area, had occasion to speak to numerous railroad men who had worked with and for his grandfather. All of these men, without exception, spoke extremely highly of "Buck" Milstead. Many described him in almost exactly the same words by saying, "He is the finest man I've ever worked with."

OKLAHOMA CITY — Mr. George A. Boatright of Oklahoma City died Tuesday at Saint Anthony’s Hospital, Oklahoma City.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 am Friday at the Poteet Funeral Home in Pawnee, Okla. with the Rev. Tom Owens officiating.
Mr. Boatright was born June 22, 1911, in Wagoner, Okla., and moved to Sapulpa in 1918 with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Boatright.
He was employed by Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company before joining the Air Force in 1945. He also was an electrical appliances salesman.
Survivors include his wife Maxine; son George S. of Kingsville, Texas; daughter Sally Coates of Oklahoma City; and sister Johnnie Boatright of Sapulpa.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon for Mrs. Lloyd Boatright, 27 years of age, of near Whitesville, Mo., at the Atchinson funeral home in Savannah. Mrs. Boatright died May 20 in a St. Joseph hospital. The Rev. Loyal E. Brown of Savannah conducted the services. The Whitesville O.E.S., of which Mrs. Boatright was a member, assisted with the services. Burial was in the Savannah cemetery at Savannah.
She was born June 6, 1919, in Savannah, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Pettijohn, now of Helena, Mo. She was married to Lloyd Boatright in Guilford.
Besides her husband and her parents she is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Jane of the home; one step-daughter, Mrs. Georgia Marie Houghton, Burlington Junction; four sisters, Mrs. Dollie Kelly and Mrs. Marguerite Morgan, Savannah; Mrs. Agnes Smith, Bolckow, and Mrs. Ethelda McElfrech, St. Joseph; and two brothers, Norman Pettijohn, St. Joseph, and Emery Pettijohn, Helena.

Jim Boatright was my grandfather, who died on Christmas Day, 1987. His full name was Harold Arden Boatright, son of Joseph Edward and Eunice Jane Deming. As a teen or young man, he decided to rename himself "H. Jim" and that's what he went by the rest of his life, except to his mother, who always called him Harold. the local AARP and at the time of his death was in the process of assessing the businesses of
the City of Garnett.
