Obituary: James Autry "Bud" Boatright, 85
Source: The Baxter Bulletin, Mountain Home, Arkansas

A memorial service for James Autry "Bud" Boatright of Mountain Home will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Kirby-Boaz Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Taglauer officiating. Mr. Boatright died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Baxter Regional Medical Center. He was 85.

He was born Aug. 17, 1921, at Kibler to Eugene Carl and Ethel Lee (Crawford) Boatright. He graduated from Alma High School in 1938 and attending University of Arkansas for two years. He married Mary Ellen Beaumont in 1941 on the Sunday before Pearl Harbor. He served four years active duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II, including Southwest Pacific duty aboard the U.S.S. Wasp (CV-18) as an aviation radar officer. After the war, he resumed studies at UA and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Boatright began a 30-year career as an electrical engineer, working first in Oklahoma for OG&E from 1948-1954 and then for American Oil Company (Amoco) in Texas City, Texas, starting in 1954. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander USNR in 1964.

Mr. Boatright designed and demonstrated an instrumentation and control system which allowed gas turbine-powered electrical generation to be used in petroleum refineries. He transferred to Amoco International to work full-time in refinery design and building. Development of a new refinery at Milford Haven in South Wales, United Kingdom allowed the family to relocate to Britain in 1970.

Mr. Boatright accepted early retirement from Amoco in 1976 and moved to Baxter County from the Texas Gulf Coast in 1977. He was quite proud to have been UA intramural champion in 1941 for (singles) horseshoe pitching. He learned to drive during the Depression in the same 1925 Ford Model TT ton truck, which later he fully restored as a retirement project. That truck remains in the family. He had a great interest in designing and building their retirement homes, chess playing, family boating and camping outings and politics at all levels. He married Dorothy Kennedy Oct. 13, 1994, in Mountain Home, and they attended Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Mr. Boatright is survived his wife, Dorothy, of the home; three sons, James Allen (Sharon) Boatright and David Michael (Paula) Boatright, all of Whiteville and Robert William (Linda) Boatright of Houston; a sister, Laverna Keller of Alma; and one grandchild, Laurel Rebekah Boatright of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Mary Ellen.

Entombment will be at Kirby's Tucker Memorial Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Ozarks.

Arrangements are by Kirby-Boaz Funeral Directors. Visit an online obituary and guest book at kirbyboaz.com.

Notes for ERNEST EVERETTE BOATRIGHT:

Ernest served in WW II. He was enlisted from 1943 to January, 1946. He was married two months later and, for many years, he worked where and when he could...picking crops, retreading tires, and working in canning factories. In these early years, he moved from Oregon to California in 1955 already having 4 kids and one more on the way. Living, first, in Independence to Stockton to Big Bear Orchards to Fresno working still whee and when he could to travel and feed his family.

From there, having been stationed for a short time in San Diego, he decided to head south and, in 1956, he went to work at Solar Harvestor as a furnace operator. He spent the next 20+ years there. He retired in the early 1980's and took life a little more easy, still remaining active around the house. He was diagnosed with prostrate cancer which was treated and 'cured', but, of course, had to be watched and soon after that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Over the years, this disease slowly settled in and finally took his ability to walk on his own in 1996. His wife and children wanted to keep him home and nursed him there until he became hospitalized in December, 1996, with internal complications (possibly another flare up of the prostrate cancer though the doctors never said) until he passed away January 8, 1997.
