Notes for ROBERT SHIELDS BOATWRIGHT:

Robert Shields Boatwright

See link for copy of death certificate.

Robert was the son of Abijah and Rachel Davis Boatwright. He was born in the Friendship community of Marion County, SC. He grew up helping his father on the farm. He married his cousin, Loula Janet Davis in 1865.

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Co I, 21st Reg't South Carolina Infantry. On July 10, 1863 he was wounded in the left leg on Morris Island, SC during the first land assault against Battery Wagner. He was taken prisoner by the Union forces under the command of Brigadier General Quincy A. Gillmore. His leg was amputated on July 13th by Union Army surgeons. On July 17th, his leg was reamputated at the US Army Hospital at Hilton Head Island, SC. He was eventually exchanged for Union troops held prisoner by Confederate forces.

As a result of his disability, he was no longer able to farm, so he became a blacksmith. He shod horses and mules for others in exchange for their working his fields.

Even though he only had one leg, he was known as a mans man and he was strong as an ox. He would put his foot in a bucket, to give himself balance, pick up his blacksmith anvil and sling it over his shoulder." - Source: David Earl Boatwright, great-grandson

Robert S. Boatwright, CSA - wounded at Morris Island, South Carolina, captured July 1863, lost a leg. Applied for pension on October 10, 1919 for service in company K, First Artillery Regiment, and in Company I, 21st Infantry Regiment.

Foster B. Boatwright Gravestone

Served is CSA, 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Private, Company E (McCreary's) (1st Provisional Army)

This regiment is sometimes referred to as Gregg's Regiment, although technically Col. Gregg was over a brigade, and after his death, command of the brigade went to Gen. McGowan. Command of this regiment was for a time under Col. Cormillus McCreary, hence the names.

1st Infantry Regiment, Provisional Army completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in August, 1861. Most of the officers and men had served in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, a six-month command, which was mustered out of service in late July. The men were from Charleston and Columbia, and the counties of Darlington, Marrion, Horry, Aiken, and Florence. Assigned to General Gregg's and McGowan's Brigade, the unit fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor . It was then involved in the difficult Petersburg siege north and south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 20 killed and 133 wounded during the Seven Days' Battles, had fifty-three percent disabled of the 283 engaged at Second Manassas and Ox Hill , and had 4 killed and 30 wounded at Sharpsburg . It sustained 73 casualties at Fredericksburg and 104 at Chancellorsville , then lost thirty-four percent of the 328 at Gettysburg . There were 16 killed, 114 wounded, and 7 missing at The Wilderness , and 19 killed, 51 wounded, and 9 missing at Spotsylvania . On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 18 officers and 101 men.
