8-277. MARY CURL BOATWRIGHT (CHESLEY JOHN DANIEL8, BENJAMIN CHESLEY7, BENJAMIN6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 1822 in Wilkes County, Georgia. She married ROBERT H. BRANNAN Abt. 1842 in Madison County, Florida, son of THOMAS BRANNEN and NANCY DONALDSON. He was born Abt. 1819 in Georgia, and died 28 Nov 1864 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York.
Notes for ROBERT H. BRANNAN:
We believe that Robert H. Brannen is the son of Thomas Brannen and Nancy Donaldson. We have not found any direct evidence that would confirm that relationship. However, we have found a preponderance of evidence that strongly supports this relationship and no evidence that disproves it.
Evidence that shows Robert H. Brannen to be the son of Thomas Brannen is as follows:
1. Robert H. Brannan is likely named after his maternal grandfather, Robert Donaldson. It was a very common practice to name the first male child after his maternal grandfather.
2. Robert H. Brannan appears with Thomas Brannan in Hills and Turners Company of Volunteers in the Florida Indian Wars 1836-1840.
3. Robert H. Brannan appears with William Brannan in Hills and Turners Company of Volunteers in the Florida Indian Wars. Sarah A. Brannen, the widow of William D. Brannen, applied for and received a pension in 1902 for William D. Brannen's Indian War service claiming he served in Capt. Hills, Capt. Turners and Capt. Langford's Co. of the Florida Volunteers. William D. Brannan, is the proven son of Thomas Brannan and Nancy Donaldson. His middle name is Donaldson. This clearly shows that William and Thomas Brannan of the Florida Indian Wars are son and father. Since Robert H. Brannan is a year or two older (Robert was born circa 1819 and William 1821 or 1822) than William it stands to reason that Robert being an older son would also have served in the Volunteer militia along with his father and younger brother.
4. Robert H. Brannan appears with Thomas Brannan and William Brannan in the 1847 tax digest of Madison County Florida. He is absent in the 1842 Voters records for Florida statehood, as are the names of William and Thomas Brannen. This suggests a relationship between Robert and Thomas.
5. Robert H. married Mary Boatright about 1842 based on the birthdate of their children. They very likely married in Madison Co. Florida as that is where she and her parents were living at the time. We also know that Thomas Brannen moved into Madison Co. Florida from Lowndes Co. Georgia about 1842 or 1843, this is about the time Robert married Mary Boatright so we have Robert and Thomas near each other thus again suggesting a relationship.
6. There is an unidentified older male born between 1815 and 1820 in the family of Thomas Brannen in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Census records. Robert, born circa 1819, fits the age description of each of those three census records.
7. Robert names his children Frank, Martha, Owen, Rebecca and Ann which are Brannen and Donaldson family names. Unfortunately, we do not find a Thomas in Robert's family.
8. In 1971, John P. Tompkins (1907-1983) told us that he thought that George Brannan was the name of his grandmothers, Anna Mercy Brannan Parker, father. It turned out that Robert H. Brannan is the father of Anna Brannan Parker (1858-1926) of Suwannee County, Florida and not George Brannen. However, John Tompkins thinking that George Brannan was his great grandfather suggests to us that a George Brannan was a very close relative of his grandmother, Anna. In addition, John Tompkins would often threaten his children (during the 1930 and 1940's) if they misbehaved by getting "George Brannan's big gun". The George Brannen of the big gun could only be George Brannen (1876-1928) of Taylor Co. Florida who is the grandson of Thomas Brannen. George Brannen of Taylor Co. was indicted for a shooting murder in 1899 in Taylor County. He was tried in Madison County in October,1901. A verdict could not be reached after two trials and the case was finally discharged by the court without a trial decision. George Brannen was thus well known in the area at the turn of the century as someone who may have used a gun to kill. It is our contention that Robert H. Brannan is the son of Thomas Brannen which makes Anna Brannan Parker a first cousin of George Brannan (1876-1928). It is reasonable to think that Anna Brannan Parker would know her first cousin that lived all their lives within 15 miles of each other. Why else would this "Big Gun" reputation of George Brannan be passed down through the Anna Brannan Parker family. We are not sure if John P. Tompkins ever met George Brannan but he would certainly have heard stories about him from his grandmother while he was growing up. We don't think he would have heard those stories if George was not related to his grandmother.
The earliest record we have is of a Robert H. Brannan enlisting as a private in Turner's Company, 12 Reg't, 1st Brigade of the Florida Mounted Volunteers in the Florida Indian Wars. Robert H. enrolled Sept. 1, 1838 at Tallahassee and mustered out on 17 November 1838 at Camp Taylor. Robert Brannan enlisted in Capt. Hills Company, 2nd Regiment, Florida Mounted Volunteers as a private on June 16, 1837 at San Pedro for 6 months and was on the muster out rolls for this Company at Ft. Gilliland, Florida on 18 December 1837. [National Archives, Microfilm M-629, Index to Service Records Indian Wars 1815-1858] His father, Thomas and his brother William also enlisted at the same time and place in these same companies.
Robert and his family appear in Columbia County, Florida in the 1850 Census and again in Suwannee County, Florida in the 1860 Census. Likely this is the same place as Suwannee County was formed out of Columbia in 1856. There is also a Martha Leach age 32, born Georgia living with the Brannan family in 1850. This is very likely a sister of Robert. Robert H. Brannan is also listed as voter no. 11 in the Poll Book of the Mineral Springs Precinct, No. 4 in Columbia Co., Florida on 2 November 1852.
Robert, at age 54. enlisted as a private in Company E, (later transferred to Co. H) of the 9th Florida Infantry, Confederate States Army on 4 September 1863 at Lake City, Florida. Nine months later he was killed during the battle of Cold Harbor near Cold Harbor, Virginia on 3 June 1864. [Widow's Pension Application, #18725, of Mary Curl Brannan, widow of W. F. Brannan, Florida State Archive - Tallahassee, Florida]
A record of an R. H. Brannan of Co. H. of the 6th Florida Infantry who died 28 November 1864 as a prisoner of war at Elmira, NY Military Prison. He is buried in the Elmira Prison Cemetery. Since the 6th Florida Infantry was later merged into the 9th Florida Infantry, as reported by Mary C. Brannan in her widow's application of W. F. Brannan, we suspect that this R. H. Brannan is in fact our Robert H. Brannan. Our rationale for this is that he was captured at the battle of Cold Harbor rather than killed and the confederate records are in error. He believe he was captured and transferred to the Federal Military Prison in Elmira, N.Y. where he died and is buried. That is the basis for his date of death and place of burial. Mary appears with her family in the 1850 Census of Columbia County, Florida and in the 1860 Census of Suwannee County, Florida. The 1860 Census in Suwannee County, Florida is the last record we have found for her. Presumably she died in Suwannee County where most of her children remained til their death.

8-278. BENJAMIN BOATRIGHT (CHESLEY JOHN DANIEL8, BENJAMIN CHESLEY7, BENJAMIN6, BENONI5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, Not Yet Determined1) was born 1824 in Madison County, Florida, and died 12 Aug 1863 in Ft. Delaware, Pea Patch Island, Deleware. He married NANCY TOWNSEND Abt. 1851 in Florida, daughter of DAVID TOWNSEND and NANCY BURNETT. She was born 1832 in Florida, and died Abt. 1884 in Columbia County, Florida.
Notes for BENJAMIN BOATRIGHT:
Enlisted in CSA on 08 May 1862, Private in Company A, 8th Florida Infantry, died at Fort Delaware, as a POW. Benjamin's brother, JOHN WILSON BOATRIGHT, also served in the 8th Florida Infantry, Company A and was captured at Gettysburg. John was also taken to Fort Delaware and remained there for the rest of the war, released on May 10, 1865.
In April, 1862, Fort Delaware, a masonry fortification located on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, received its first prisoners of war- a total of 358 Confederate soldiers from the Battle of Kernstown, Virginia. By January, 1866 when the fort was discontinued as a prison, the number of men confined had reached 22,773. This total includes southern soldiers, officers and political prisoners. Of these prisoners, 2346 died at Fort Delaware, known as the "Andersonville of the North" The dead were transported across the river to New Jersey, near Fort Mott, which is located near Harrisonville, Salem County, New Jersey. The dead were buried in trenches, and individual identification was lost. Today a monument stands at the site of the burials with a bronze plaque listing the names of the interred.
While the facility was ill equipped to house the numbers of prisoners who came to inhabit the island, Fort Delaware was not as cruel or deadly as other Civil War era prisons. The statistics show that a smaller percentage of men died there than in most other prisons. Even though disease, dirty drinking water, and poor nutrition were rampant at Fort Delaware, they did not engulf the population as drastically as they did in other prisons. Poorly constructed wooden barracks were built outside the walls of the fort to house the prisoners, but they provided inadequate protection from the icy winds which blew off of the river in the winter.
The accomodations differed very little from their guards, who were housed in similar quarters. Overcrowding and the swampy nature of the island led to infestations of lice, rats, malaria-infected mosquitos, and other vermin. Dysentery, small pox, and other diseases were common and even epidemic on occasion. A 600-bed hospital and a separate pestilence residence were constructed to better deal with the various maladies that afflicted the island residents. A staff of well-trained surgeons tended to the sick with equal concern for Union, Confederate, and civilian life.
Many prisoners arrived with nothing more than tattered rags on their backs. Some were marched from the battlefield without shoes. Some Union guards, usually those with the least experience, meted out cruel punishments. Others (usually combat veterans) were fair and considerate. Contact with families was limited to single page letters due to the overwheling volume of mail that had to be screened by clerks.
Following the battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg in the summer of 1863, the prison population swelled by more than 12,500 new arrivals. Including the guards, garrison troops, construction laborers, and other residents, the population on Pea Patch Island approached that of Wilmington, Delaware's largest city. All were huddled together on 75 swampy acres. In three and a half years, more than 30,000 unfortunates passed through the gates of the island fortress.
The commandant of Fort Delaware, Brig.Gen. Albin F. Schoepf, a Hungarian refugee, was nicknamed "General Terror". The inmates were described as "looking like the vanguard of the Resurrection ....Scores seemed to be ill, many were suffering from scurvy, while all bore marks of severe treatment in their faces and wasted forms".
Often, the only way for an inmate to obtain fresh food was from local civilian sympathizers or from Northern "suttlers" who set up shop within prison walls. Those with money would buy the much needed food, while the less fortunate inmates could only barter pieces of their uniforms or prison-made crafts for a few vegetables or pieces of fruit.
Water was another problem, as one prisoner wrote: "The standing rainwater breeds a dense swarm of animalculae and when the interior sediment is stirred up...the whole contents become a turgid, jellified mass of waggle tails, worms, dead leaves, dead fishes, and other putrescent abominations...the smell of it is enough to revolt the stomach...to say nothing of making one's throat a channel for such stuff."
Even an 1863 outbreak of smallpox and calls for improvements from the U.S. surgeon general failed to move Col. William Hoffman, commissary general of Union prisons. Confederate prisoners continued to languish in Fort Delaware until two months after the war had ended.
According to Captain John S. Swann (a prisoner at Fort Delaware), "We formed in line and marched to the mess hall, in which were several long rows of plank tables with pieces of bread and meat arranged along the sides at intervales (sic) of some two feet. When we were in place each prisoner took one ration. The bread was made of rye and wheat flour, well cooked, but the piece very small, about half enough for a well man. The meat a small chunk of beef. Occasionally all sinew or mostly bone. It was cut up very carelessly and very small, not half a ration. Some days the bread was substituted with crackers, and these were hard days on us. We were permitted to take these rations to our bunks. I ate mine but remained very hungry. When dinner came the same thing was repeated, except there was occasionally a tin cup of what was called corn soup very tasteless and insipid, with little or no grease."
He also wrote: "Not long after my arrival I heard a cry "Rat call! Rat call!" I went out to see what this meant. A number of prisoners were moving and some running up near the partition, over which a sargeant (sic) was standing and presently he began throwing rats down. The prisoners scrambled for the rats like school boys for apples, none but some of the most needy prisoners, and the needy were the large majority, would scramble for these rats. Of course but few were lucky enough to get a rat. The rats were cleaned, put in salt water a while and fried. Their flesh was tender and not unpleasant to the taste."
House Report No. 45- 3rd Session, 40th Congress (1868-69) states that 2,502 of these men died on the island. Of this number, the bodies of 2,436 soldiers and 36 civilians were buried in trenches at Finn's Point National cemetery on the New Jersey shore overlooking Fort Delaware. Identification was soon lost. Later a granite obelisk was erected in their honor. Around the monument's base bronze plaques bear the names of the interred. Three soldiers' bodies were turned over to friends and relatives for private burial; 27 are unaccounted for.
Finn’s Point National Cemetery is located about six miles northwest of Salem, N.J., at the north end of what was Fort Mott Military Reservation. Today, the picturesque cemetery is entirely surrounded by the Killchohook National Wildlife Refuge and is adjacent to Fort Mott State Park. Originally, the United States purchased the land for the construction of the Finn’s Point Battery to protect the Port of Philadelphia. By 1863, however, the grounds increasingly served as a burial site for Confederate prisoners of war who died while imprisoned at Fort Delaware.
Fort Delaware was on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, one mile east of Delaware City. The island was named after a colonial-era tale that a boat loaded with peas ran aground on a river shoal, and the peas sprouted in the sandy loam. In 1847, Congress appropriated $1 million to construct the largest modern coastal defense fort in the nation here, surpassing Fort Sumter in size, to protect the ports of Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia.
Even prior to its designation as a national cemetery, the remains of POWs were transported to Finn’s Point across the river for burial. When weather or ice made trips to the mainland hazardous, it was necessary to bury the bodies on Pea Patch Island. Finns Point National Cemetery was enhanced and improved in response to the urging of Governor James L. Kemper of Virginia. Governor Kemper had been a brigade commander under Major General George E. Pickett in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and was wounded in action at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Many of Kemper’s Virginians were sent to Fort Delaware and those who died there were buried at Finns Point. United States Adjutant General E. D. Townsend wrote to Governor Kemper in 1875: "Most of the bodies of the Confederate prisoners of war who died at Fort Delaware are interred in the soldier’s burial ground at Finns Point on the New Jersey shore, opposite to the fort, which is enclosed by an Osage-orange hedge, and while not in as good [an] order as might be desired, is reported as presenting a more respectable appearance than many country church-yards. -- the Quartermaster General will be directed to have the remains of the soldiers - Union and Confederate - buried on Pea Patch Island -- transferred to Finns Point National Cemetery, ---." Finn’s Point was official declared a national cemetery Oct. 3, 1875.
The Quartermaster Department exhumed 135 Union remains and 187 Confederate remains found on Pea Patch Island in November 1875 and reinterred them in the Finns Point burial ground. Twenty-two empty coffins were uncovered on Pea Patch Island during this exhumation, and it appeared that these remains had been removed by family and friends sometime after the war. These are presumed to have been Confederate remains although the surviving Quartermaster records and reports are not clear on this point. The Finns Point burial ground may have been used before the Civil War to bury soldiers involved in the construction of Fort Delaware. There were ten marked Federal graves present in the burial ground when it was first surveyed in the summer of 1875. Prior to June 1863 when Finns Point was first used to bury Confederate soldiers and civilian detainees, these dead were buried on Pea Patch Island. Thereafter the Pea Patch Island Confederate plot was used only when inclement weather prevented taking them across the Delaware River to New Jersey. The Union dead were buried on Pea Patch Island in individually marked graves throughout the war and not removed until November 1875. Markers were lost on Pea Patch Island by 1875 and individual graves, Union or Confederate, could not be identified. While the 135 Union remains were reinterred in numbered grave sites, those markers were also lost over the years. Today there are no marked individual Civil War burials.
Having both Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War buried within the confines of the same national cemetery, albeit in separate sections, makes Finns Point somewhat unique. Arlington National Cemetery does have a Confederate Circle and Philadelphia National Cemetery encloses a separate Confederate section. More typical are the separate national cemeteries for Confederates at Camp Chase, Elmira, Point Lookout, and Johnson’s Island. Burial sites used during the war exclusively for the Confederate soldiers, sailors, and civilians who died in Federal prisons and military hospitals in the North were designated as national cemeteries after the war.
Congress passed legislation in 1906 authorizing the marking of the Confederate graves in these cemeteries as part of the national reconciliation effort that took place following the Spanish-American War. Monuments to the Confederate dead buried in the North were erected by the Federal government where other organizations, such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy, had not already done so. The Office of the Commissioner for Marking Graves of Confederate Dead compiled and published a "Register of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Who Died in Federal Prisons and Military Hospitals in the North" (U. S. War Department, 1912). This "1912 Register" contains the names of 2,436 Confederate military prisoners who were interred in the mass burial trenches and pits at Finns Point, and these names appear on the 12 bronze memorial tablets placed around the base of the Confederate monument. There are no individually marked graves, Union or Confederate, of war time dead in Finns Point National Cemetery.
The Confederate Monument, an 85 foot tall granite obelisk, erected in 1910 by the federal government in memory of the 2,436 Confederate prisoners of war who died at Fort Delaware. Their names are inscribed on the monument.

Notes for BENJAMIN JOHN ROBERT BOATWRIGHT:
There is some confusion around John and his brother James. In several family histories, John is called "John Quincy Boatwright", married to Amanda Geddie. Per census records, John is married to Amanda, but the 1870 and 1910 census refer to John as "Benjamin". John was the oldest son, and it was common to name your oldest son in honor of your father, in this case, John's grandfather, Benjamin Chesley Boatwright. James is referred to in the Census as "Quincy" and in the 1870 Census as "James Q A Boatwright". I believe that James is the "John Quincy Boatwright" referred to in many histories. James' gravestone is marked "John Quincy Boatwright", I believe in error, futhering the confusion. Source: George Boatright

The 2nd Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Jacksonville, Florida, in July, 1861. Its twelve companies contained men from Escambia, Columbia, Leon, Marion, Jackson, Alachua, St. Johns, Putnam, Hamilton, Nassau, and Madison counties. The regiment was soon ordered to Virginia and in April, 1862, had 530 effectives. It was unattached in the fight at Williamsburg and under the command of General Garland at Seven Pines. Later it was assigned to General Pryor's, E.A. Perry's, and Finegan's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 2nd participated in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then was active in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and around Appomattox. This unit was organized with 1,185 officers and men, reported 23 killed and 114 wounded at Gaines' Mill and Frayser's Farm, sustained 49 casualties during the Maryland Campaign, and had 3 killed and 29 wounded at Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg it lost forty-two percent of the 242 engaged, and on April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 7 officers and 59 men. The field officers were Colonels Walter R. Moore, Edward A. Perry, Lewis G. Pyles, and George T. Ward, Lieutenant Colonel S. St. George Rogers, and Major G.W. Call.

Notes for BENJAMIN BOATWRIGHT:
When Benjamin turned 18 he and his friend Charles Emerson went to Cedar Key to volunteer for service in the U. S. Army. They were taken by boat to Key West, Florida, where he was enlisted in Company E, Second Florida Calvary, on April 25, 1864. Prior to joining the army, Benjamin had lived in Liberty county, 1859; Leon county, 1860; and Liberty county,1861-63 per his Army records. Among other battles, Company E fought at St. Marks Light House (Natural Bridge, as we now know it); therefore, he was fighting with the North against other Boatwright relatives fighting for the CSA. He was discharged November 29, 1865 as a private at Tallahassee, Florida.

On March 6, 1865, a significant battle took place on the banks of the St. Marks River south of Tallahassee, Florida. Remembered today as the Battle of Natural Bridge, the fight preserved Tallahassee's status as the only Southern capital east of the Mississippi not conquered by Union forces during the Civil War. One of the last significant Confederate victories of the war, it also protected a significant area of North Florida and South Georgia from the severe economic losses suffered by many other regions of the South.

Notes for SABRIE EDMONDS:
Benjamin Boatwright and Sabrie Edmonds were married in Lafayette county, Florida, May 19, 1870. Widow's pension for Sabrie Boatwright was dropped December 31, 1900, due to her death. It seems the census takers had a problem with her name. I found her listed as Sophia and Deborah as well as Sabrie and Sabry.
My grandfather Walter Eugene Boatwright was raised by the midwife Mrs. Bass who delivered him and knew almost nothing about his ancestors. It was he who poured and labeled the concrete slabs over their graves in the Old Ward cemetery. Unfortunately, he got the name wrong for his grandmother (a common problem, it seems) and labeled her grave as Mary Elizabeth. Under that slab is actually Sabrie Edmonds Boatwright.
