Notes for JOHN A. BOATRIGHT:

John A. Boatright

John was a farmer, a miller and a coffin maker, and was a member of the Brushy Primitive Baptist Church. The house he build about 1858 on the south side of Brushy Creek and in which he raised all his family, still stands in December of 1965, although it has been turned into a barn. He once killed a deer while standing in the front doorway of the house, the door had not yet been hung and the opening was covered with a piece of carpet to keep the cold and snow out at the time. He kept the deer horns and built a recessed nook for them in the west gable of the house, and they remainded there for years. They were perhaps the only remaining native deer horns in those parts in December of 1965, and the gun used in killing the deer and the horns were in the possession of John's great grandson, Lewis Delane Boatright, b. 1941. Nashville National Cemetery Nashville National Cemetery Nashville National Cemetery Nashville National Cemetery Nashville National Cemetery is located in Madison, Tenn., in Davidson County approximately six miles northeast of Nashville’s city center. The tracks of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad bisect the cemetery. An easement for the right of way was granted to the railroad in perpetuity in 1912.

Most of the land for Nashville National Cemetery was acquired shortly after the Civil War. In July 1866, 45 acres were transferred to the United States from Morton B. Howell, master of the Chancery Court of Nashville, in accordance with the decree of the court. During the first few months of 1867, another 17 acres were conveyed in the same manner. The final portion, about 1-1/2 acres, was purchased by the United States in 1879 from J. Watts Judson.

The original interments were the remains of soldiers removed from temporary burial grounds around Nashville’s general hospitals, as well as the Civil War battlefields at Franklin and Gallatin, Tenn., and Bowling Green and Cave City, Ky. There are 4,141 unknowns interred at Nashville National Cemetery.

The stone wall around the cemetery and the limestone archway at the entrance were both constructed in 1870. At one time, rumors held that the remains of three Union soldiers were entombed at the top of the archway, but there is no evidence to support this claim. The present lodge, the third constructed at the cemetery, was built near the site of the original lodge and was completed in 1931.

Thomas Lackey, farmer, P. O. Palestine, was born January 3, 1824, in Clark County, Kentucky. His father, John Lackey, was also born in Kentucky. His occupation was that of a farmer and wheelwright, manufacturing spinning wheels. He was married in Kentucky to Nancy Wilson, born in Kentucky. She was the mother of nine children, and died in this county. Mr. Lackey came to this county in 1828, with his father, and went to school here and was married, 1852, to Miss A. E. Boatright, who died in 1862. She was the mother of three children- Amanda, born June 16, 1854; Helen, born September 22, 1857; and Mary, born December 20, 1859. Mr. Lackey was joined in matrimony a second time in 1863, to Mrs. Malissa Kibler, born October 12, 1824, in this county. She is a daughter of Hudson and Hannah (Higgins) McCorpin, and the mother of four children-John Kibler and Ellen Kibler were from her first husband; Richard, born October 6, 1867; and Ann Eliza, born February 9, 1865, are children of her present husband. His two oldest children are married, Amanda to R. H. Kitchell, and Helen to William Walters. Mr. Lackey's grandparents were of the Old Virginia stock, characterized for their known hospitality, honesty and straightforwardness. He had a brother in the late war. He is identified with the Republican party, but in local affairs he votes for the best man. Source: History of Crawford and Clark Counties, Illinois. Edited by William Henry Perrin.

Samuel Boatright Obituary:

On Tuesday, December 13th at 5am “taps” sounded for another old soldier, and Samuel Boatright a veteran of the Civil war answered the call. He was born in Lamotte township in the vicinity of the Pearce school house in 1842 and died at the home of his son Donald in Robinson, Ill. December 13th, 1927, age 85 years, 2 months and 3 days.

He enlisted as a soldier in the Civil war when 18 years of age, a mere boy, thrilled with the promise that the trouble between North and South would be over in 90 days and he could come home covered with glory and praise for his assistance in saving his country. But, this dream did not come true, for three years and some months he lived in the “tented field of the old campground” enduring great hardships, and nights without rest or sleep. When in the great battle of Stone River, Tennessee, a comrade was shot down at his right, another on his left, while the one in front fell mortally wounded unto death, but he escaped unhurt. Of the 100 hundred men that belonged to his company 99 have answered the call and only one remains. This was company D of the 38th Illinois Division.

Soon after the close of the war he was married to Stacy Helen Kibler and they began their life just south of Trimble. Later on they moved south and east and with exception of a few years, his entire life was spent in Lamotte township, where his children, Donald, John, Anna and Bertha were born and brought up.

He and his wife united with the Trimble church in 1888 during a meeting conducted by Sister Garwood, after the death of his wife in 1910 he was troubled about the uncared condition of the Oak Grove cemetery where she was buried and proposed to his old friend William Gill that they proceed to make plans to clear the ground of weeds and brush and try to interest all those that had relatives and friends buried there to help with money to improve and beautify the place. They received much encouragement and that was the beginning of a new era for Oak Grove cemetery. Our beautiful city of our dead, the “mantle of improvement” of these two faithful men has fallen on younger men who have kept their work going until at this time Oak Grove cemetery is one of the best kept and most beautiful cemeteries in this part of Illinois.

Samuel Alexander Boatright House

These two men worked not for praise but for the good of their fellowmen and we have the promise in Rev. 14th chapter, 13th verse, that they shall rest from their labors and their works to follow them. After life of more than four score years the long trail is ended. The book of this earthly life is closed, and we can say with the poet Scott:

Soldiers rest their welfare O’er,
Sleep an Sleep, that knows no waking,
Dream of battlefields no more,
Days of danger, Nights of waking,
There will not disturb thee more.

Notes for JOHN BENTON BOATRIGHT:

John Benton Boatright

"The West That Was Won" by John Leakey

Leakey describes the Boatrights and the Holcombs as living in East Texas before the Civil War, as opposing slavery and secession, and as being among a group who fled to Mexico to avoid the Texas vigilantes, who were hanging or imprisioning Union supporters. Whether JB fled to Mexico is uncertain. Texas voted to secede in February 1861 and in March of 1861, Texas formally withdrew from the Union.

On November 7, 1882 JB was elected Sheriff of Uvalde County.

John was in the Civil War and was wounded in the leg and walked with a limp. He was a bugler. John came back from California and went and stayed with his daughter, Sarah Roberts, at Del Rio, Texas. Told to me by his grand-daughter, Bertie Lee Roberts. Source: Willie B. Smith

Notes for EMMA TERESA QUICK:

The hurricane that destroyed Galveston on September 8, 1900, is the nations's deadliest natural disaster. Although its death toll will never be known precisely, the 1900 Storm claimed upwards of 8,000 lives on Galveston Island and several thousand more on the mainland. In Galveston, it destroyed 2, 636 houses and left thousands more damaged. The city's property losses were estimated at $28-30 million.

Various sources printed long lists of the dead. These lists have been combined and checked against the 1899-1900 Galveston city directory for accuracy in name spelling. Please note that where a name could not be verified, it could be misspelled. There may be duplicates which also could not be verified.

A Mrs. Boatwright is included on the list. This is most likely Emma Boatwright, wife of Alexander.
