Our family Lore says that the name Herbert 'Lee' Boatwright was bestowed on my grandfather because of John Guerrant Boatwright's admiration for the great general. Source: John Boatwright, grandson of Herbert Lee Boatwright

Herbert Lee Boatwright (September 12, 1862–January 23, 1935) was a dedicated and influential citizen who gave freely of his time and means for the improvement of Danville and its institutions. He, along with R. L. Dibrell and A. B. Carrington, composed the successful business team which was the guiding force behind the growth of Dibrell Brothers, Inc. Their intelligent leadership and judgment carried the company through many years of progress and prosperity.

H. Lee Boatwright, as he was known as an adult, was born in Buckingham County, the son of Dr. John Guerrant Boatwright, native of Buckingham County, and Pattie Pendleton Phillips Boatwright, native of Albemarle County. The lineage of the Boatwright family traces back to a Welsh origin. The original American representatives settled in Virginia in the Colonial period.

Dr. John G. Boatwright, after graduating from the University of Virginia became one of the leading physicians and surgeons in the City of Danville. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the Confederate Army as a surgeon serving throughout the war as a major. After the war, he returned to Danville where he engaged in a successful medical practice from 1865 until his death in 1875 when Herbert Lee, his fourth child of six children, was only twelve years old.

Herbert Lee Boatwright Gravestone H. Lee Boatwright received his early education in Danville but was forced to abandon his education after his father’s death and go to work in George S. Hughes’s local tobacco factory. During five years in the factory, he acquired an extensive knowledge of the tobacco trade while becoming an excellent judge of leaf tobacco. Careers could be built on such discriminating knowledge in late-nineteenth-century Danville. The development of bright tobacco before the Civil War and the proliferation of the innovative, loose-leaf sales system after the war combined to make Danville the leading tobacco market in the United States between the 1870s and World War I. Boatwright made good use of his discerning eye.

By 1879, at the age of seventeen, he had become the manager of Ferrell and Flinn, leaf tobacco brokers. Later, he was a member of the firm of Schoolfield & Boatwright, large tobacco dealers, and when this firm went out of business at the death of Mr. Schoolfield, he established his own business under the name of H. L Boatwright & Company. In 1904 he joined Dibrell Brothers becoming its secretary-treasurer after it reorganized in 1905. Being an instinctive judge of tobacco, he was placed in charge of all leaf purchases, determining what to buy, when to buy it, and what price to pay.

Herbert Lee Boatwright Gravestone Throughout his life, Boatwright was known for his uncanny tobacco sense, making him an important part of the famous triumvirate of Dibrell Brothers, Inc., consisting of Dibrell, Carrington and Boatwright, which guided the firm for many years. At the Dibrell’s death in 1920, Boatwright was promoted to vice-president, the position he served in until his death.

Boatwright’s tobacco and business acumen translated into positions of increasing civic responsibility. He served as president of the Danville Tobacco Association from 1903 to 1904, was a founder of the local Young Men’s Christian Association in 1907 prior to its opening to the public on Thanksgiving Day 1908, and led in the formation of the Commercial Association, which later became the Danville Chamber of Commerce.

He served as a trustee of the Roanoke College for Young Women (later Averett College) and the University of Richmond. A lifelong Democrat, he guided the local party through the political crisis of 1928 when party members divided over the presidential candidacy of Alfred E. Smith, whose opposition to Prohibition and membership in the Catholic Church alienated many Virginia Democrats. Boatwright chaired the city Democratic committee and supported Smith. He continued to be active in state and local politics, being closely associated with his friend, Rorer A. James.

Boatwright was initiated into Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122 on October 28, 1895, and was elected Master of the Lodge on December 9, 1907. Elected a trustee of the Lodge in December 1927, he served until his death while continuing to be active in other Masonic bodies including the Shriners.

Boatwright and his wife were both zealous members of First Baptist Church where he was chairman of its deacons for many years.

Boatwright married Mary Elizabeth Vaughan (November 29, 1868–November 7, 1955) of Halifax County, daughter of Edgar Vaughan, on December 18, 1889. They had three sons and three daughters: Edgar Vaughan, John Guerrant, Alice Pendleton who married a Williamson and lived in New York, Florence who married a Sanford and lived in Evanston, Illinois, Marion who married a Dudley and lived in Richmond and Herbert Lee, Jr. who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. The Boatwright home, at 904 Main Street was where Mrs. Boatwright lived until her death. John Guerrant Boatwright (August 21, 1892–June 4, 1983) married Mary Archer Glass, daughter of Senator Carter Glass and Aurelia McDearman Caldwell, who lived at Dan’s Hill and retired from Dibrell Brothers. His daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) married Dr. Glenn B. Updike, Jr. and inherited Dan’s Hill.

Herbert Lee Boatwright died of heart complications following an influenza attack and was buried in Greenhill Cemetery as were many of his family. The headline of his obituary reads, “Throng Attends Mr. Boatwright’s Funeral Service,” and despite a request by the family that no flowers be sent, more than a hundred floral tributes were laid upon his grave. Honorary pall bearers totaled over eighty five and included many prominent Danville citizens. Boatwright left an estate estimated at $600,000 to his widow and children.

There are two streets in Danville which bear the Boatwright name, Boatwright Avenue which runs southeast from 745 Patton Street to Loyal Street and in 2005 contained six businesses, and Boatwright Street, a short street which runs south from 1234 Stokes Street to a dead end at the Norfolk-Southern Railroad tracks and in 2005 contained only one dwelling.

Herbert Lee Boatwright House

House is rated excellent example of Beaux Arts Classicism. Conversion to apartments has retained many fine features. The crowned death molding and bookcases supported by classic columns in former 8oatwright library, still used as such the present occupant, and paneled dining room, now parlor, make a beautiful background for the furnishings of late 17th and 18th century reproductions. Collection of old pieces and accessories greatly enhance the beauty of the apartment. Of particular interest is an early Victorian pier mirror that once hung in the British Embasy in Washington, French lamp by Bouloute, matching pair of which is in the Oval Room of White House.

Built as an Italianate-style home in 1860, this mansion is most recognized today for the elegant face-lift added 50 years later by H. Lee Boatwright, a rising young tobacco executive at Dibrell Brothers, Inc. These alterations reflect the popular turn-of-the-century trend toward beaux arts classicism. Just before the War Between the States, local merchant Ej. Bell had the original home built with semi-circular and arched windows still notable today on its Chestnut Place facade.

The Bell family lived here until Mr. Bell’s bankruptcy in 1868. At an auction sale, the home was purchased by William J. Peake, a resident of New York, who soon sold the property to Mr. and Mrs. John R. Pace, who lived here for twenty years with their six children. After Pace’s death, Mr. Boatwright purchased the home in 1893 and moved from his previous residence at 136 Chestnut Street to this mansion, which he made eminently more suitable for entertaining foreign tobacconists and political figures of the day. Mr. Boatwright engaged W.R. Deitrick, local contractor, to remodel the exterior extensively by adding Palladian windows and doors with beveled glass and a two-story Ionic portico intersected by a one-story Ionic colonnade.

In 1967, Mice Boatwright Williamson, a daughter, conveyed the home to Judge and Mrs. Archibald Murphey Aiken. Aiken was Judge of the Corporation Court from 1950 until his death in 1971. His widow lived in the home until 1979 when she conveyed the property to Dr. Malcolm Mallery. Dr. Mallery occupied the second floor apartment created by Boatwright’s daughter in the 1950s as he began an extensive rehabilitation to stabilize the home. In 1986, with love at first sight, Robert and Anne Banks purchased the home and began to unravel the years of 'remuddling’ to recreate a private home in the mansion of 6,500 square feet and six full baths.

The Brights, local decorators, purchased the property in 1991, and have continued to adapt most of the home for their family’s use while maintaining two desirable apartments and the carriage house for tenant use. The floor plan now flows with the removal of partitions and the relocation of a spectacular new kitchen on the ground level in the area used originally as a servant kitchen and smokehouse. The wall colors are a rich palette of traditional, but fresh shades, creating a gracious environment for the elegant furnishings, including antiques and elements available to the trade. The classical interior columns and detailed dentil mouldings are inspiring reminders of the lifestyles of early Danville’s rich and famous occupants of Millionaires’ Row. In the formal dining room the Palladian window with beveled glass lends a light, airy feeling reminiscent of a garden setting.

Recognized today for its monumental two-story columned portico, it’s hard to believe that this elegant, century-old face-lift covers a simple Italianate I-house—built on the eve of the Civil War. Some 50 years later, a rising young tobacco executive recreated the dwelling to reflect his aspirations at the tobacco brokerage firm Dibrell Brothers. Just around the corner, on Chestnut Place, in contrast to this classical facade of beaux arts inspiration, are semi-circular and arched windows, and heavy brackets typical of the original 1860 house built for local merchant E.J. Bell.

The family lived here until Mr. Bell’s bankruptcy in 1868. Then, at auction, the dwelling was purchased by a resident of New York, William J. Peake. He soon sold the property to tobacconist John R. Pace, and his wife, who lived here for two decades with their six children. Deitrick, a local contractor, to remodel the exterior extensively by adding Palladian windows, and doors with beveled glass, plus a two-story Ionic portico intersected by a one-story Ionic colonnade.

In 1967, Alice B. Williamson, conveyed her home to Judge and Mrs. Archibald Murphey Aiken. Aiken was Judge of the Corporation Court from 1950 until his death in 1971. His widow lived here until 1979 when she conveyed the property to Dr. Malcolm Mallery. Dr. Mallery occupied the second floor apartment created by Boatwright’s daughter in the 1950s as he began an extensive rehabilitation. Thereafter, from 1986 to 2009, the process of removing apartments and returning the house, by degrees, to its origins as a single-family dwelling continued under a succession of owners—Bob and Anne Banks, Danny and Carolyn Bright, Ed and Suzanne Stowe, and Rod Tomlinson and Maria Mejias.

Two years ago Jonathan and Ginger Holbrook, who moved to Danville from North Carolina, purchased the rambling house and began their own campaign to bring out the luster of rooms with rich details like classical interior columns set off by dentil crown moldings, and Palladian-style windows with sparkling beveled glass. With a half-dozen children on the “maintenance crew,” the Holbrooks are busy stewards inside and out at this grand old mansion.

William Penick and Rena Mary Walker Boatwright House

Built in 1901 on land once belonging to Major Sutherlin by Willie Boatwright - typical of houses built around this time with mantels of scroll work, acanthus leaf designs, quarter grain oak floors, shoulder-high wainscoating, stained glass windows with fleur-de-lis.

Complete in 1897, this Queen Anne style dwelling with Colonial Revival details has been home to only two families. It was built for Mr. William P. Boatwright, who founded a printing firm, Boatwright Brothers Co.; and a furniture company, Boatwright Furniture Co. The den still contains a low, massive bookcase—one of several that held the Boatwrights’ extensive library—that is a product of Boatwright Furniture.

Mr. Boatwright and his wife lived here for more than 50 years.

The present owners acquired the house in 1950 shortly after Mr. Boatwright died. According to Mrs. Moore, the house is reminiscent of one where she lived as a child in Portsmouth, Virginia.

With its steep gables, irregular bays, and semi-circular porch, the house is a classic example of a restrained, late-Victorian frame dwelling.

About 1940 the Boatwrights made the only alteration to the original structure when they enlarged the back of the house—the present dining room and kitchen.

In their 38 years on Sutherlin Avenue, Mr. and Mrs. Moore have worked diligently to preserve and enhance their home both inside and out. Their only subtle change at the front of the house was the replacement of the upper wood panels in the front doors with ones of glass, complete with an etched fleur-de-lis design. This motif is like that in the massive stained glass windows in the stairwell above the rear hall. The newel post is topped with an original gaslight and frosted shade. The front hall is enhanced by several period architectural features—a plaster ceiling medallion , and a built-in “boot bench” with beveled mirror. Overhead, a spindle-work screen completes the design. The “Adamesque” mantels in the parlor and den to the left of the hall suggest particularly the revival of interest in classical details at the turn of the century.

Notes for JOSEPH OVERTON BOATWRIGHT:

Joseph Overton Boatwright House

Among the most sought-after building lots in the tobacco and textile prosperity which surged ahead in Danville despite the 1893 financial panic were those parcels along Holbrook and Sutherlin avenues subdivided in the late 1 880s from the former rear yard of the Sutherlin Mansion. According to city landbooks, the forty-foot lot, number 18, purchased at auction in 1894 by T.S. Williamson remained unimproved for almost a decade. In 1903 Williamson had this comfortable house at 130 Sutherlin Avenue constructed as an investment for $1,600. A member of an established Southside tobacco family, Thomas S. Williamson was also associated at the time with a printing firm on South Union Street, Boatwright Brothers Co., where he served as vice president. In fact, the first known occupant of this late-Queen-Anne-style dwelling, J. Overton Boatwright, worked with him at Boatwright Brothers, according to the 1908 Danville city directory. William P. Boatwright, Mr. Boatwright’s brother and business associate in the firm, lived three doors down at 142 Sutherlin Avenue.

In 1912 Williamson disposed of the property altogether when he sold the house to Lula S. Koons, who lived here for about three years with her husband Dr. Harry E. Koons, a local physician. The house then was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. E. Walton Brown. Mr. Brown, an attorney with Withers, Brown & Leigh, resided here with his family until 1918, when the house was purchased by Rosa B. Bagby, the wife of 1. Lovelace Bagby. The Bagbys and their children lived here for some forty years, and during that time two generations, father and son, became associated with the old First National Bank, the predecessor of the local branch of NationsBank, which last year conveyed its Main Street facility to the W.R. Grace Company. Mr. Bagby survived his wife by about four years. After his death in 1961, his two sons sold the house to Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert S. Guinn who remained here little more than a year before selling the property to the trustees. of St. Peters Greek Orthodox Church as a home for their minister.

In 1975 Steven and Ella Weber purchased the house during the initial flush of restoration work on Sutherlin Avenue following the creation of the historic district in 1972. Mr. Weber’s expertise in his profession as a mechanic, combined with his and Mrs. Weber’s other skills began to transform the aging structure. Their efforts at restoration, especially evident to the passerby in a period exterior paint scheme, brick sidewalk, antique lighting and cast-iron fence, proved to be just the first of several by conscientious young couples, each of whom gradually improved the house and, in turn, the entire street. When the Webers moved to Forest Hills, the house was sold to another enthusiastic young professional couple, John and Lisa Vine in 1984. In 1987, after another brief transfer of ownership, the house was acquired by Fred and Vicki Meder. The Meders continued the work of their predecessors and Mr. Meder added his talents as a landscape designer to the grounds, especially in the rear yard.

Just over a year ago, the house was purchased by Parker and Sarah Perkins. The couple is enthusiastic about the structure, not only for its charm and live ability but also because, as their first house since being married in June of 1996, they are eager to make it a special, memorable place. Mr. Perkins, a stockbroker by profession, brought with him here reminders of his family’s roots in nearby South Boston, Virginia, including many hand-crafted items fashioned by his mother, who is a gifted artist. Also on display are mementos of his years in the Marines, including decorations for service in the Gulf War and as a Marine Aide at the White House. Mrs. Perkins too is no stranger to antique houses. Among the pictures decorating the upstairs is one of Bunker Hill Farm, a 90-acre family estate near Chevy Chase, Maryland, built in 181 7 by her great-great-great grandfather, William Henry Baldwin. Complementing a number of the couple’s prized family possessions are several English antiques, Victorian period pieces appropriate to their turn-of-the-century house, along with furnishings from Southside Virginia—all collected by the Perkins, in addition to watercolors and other original art which adorn the walls.

He married ELLEN MOORE THOMAS 23 Dec 1890 in Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky, daughter of JOHN THOMAS and VIRGINIA MOORE. She was born 12 Dec 1868 in Marion, Smyth County, Virginia, and died 29 Jan 1946 in Richmond, Virginia.

Notes for FREDERIC WILLIAM BOATWRIGHT:

Frederic William Boatwright

Frederic William Boatwright was 27 years old when he was elected President of Richmond College in 1895. For the next 51 years he served as President of Richmond College and the University of Richmond, one of the longest college presidencies in the history of American higher education. He retired as President in 1946, to become the University's first Chancellor, a post he held until his death in 1951. Boatwright was associated successively with Richmond College and the University of Richmond for sixty-eight years as student, professor, president, and chancellor. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

Boatwright was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, on January 28, 1868, to the Reverend Reuben Baker Boatwright and Maria Elizabeth Woodruff Boatwright. Reverend Boatwright was the grandson of a Revolutionary War soldier and an alumnus of Richmond College. Frederic W. Boatwright entered Richmond College in 1883 at the young age of 15, and graduated in 1888, with the Master of Arts degree. He continued his graduate studies in French and German at the Universities of Halle and The Sorbonne, and the University of Leipzig.

Three Generations of Boatwrights: Reuben Baker Boatwright, son Frederic William
Boatwright and Grandson, Frederic Leroy Boatwright Dr. Boatwright was considered a man of vision, of great business acumen, and almost infallible judgment. He was a great teacher, a sound scholar, an able administrator, and a Southern leader of wide influence. He was elected President of Richmond College the year following a great national financial panic. The institution was poverty-stricken and its future uncertain. There were nine professors, one hundred and eighty-three students, the annual income was less than $30,000, the total resources of the school were less than $500,000, and the campus contained thirteen acres. Within three years, he had balanced the budget and raised funds for a new science building. At the time of his retirement as President in 1946, the University of Richmond had expanded to a new campus of over 300 acres, assets of more than $7,000,000, annual income of $650,000, a faculty of more than a hundred, and a student body of nearly four thousand students. Boatwright had been recognized with honorary doctorates from Mercer University, Georgetown University, Baylor University, and the Medical College of Virginia. He had also served on the executive board of the Association of American Colleges and President of the Baptist General Association of Virginia for three successive terms. In 1955, the Frederic William Boatwright Memorial Library was officially dedicated and opened on the University of Richmond campus as a memorial and testimony to his great service to the institution.

Frederic William Boatwright Plaque

While a conservative man in temperment, Boatwright was a courageous exponent of academic freedom. "We must encourage our teachers and students to think," he said, "and we should not be surprised when they do not think alike." That position he steadfastly defended against all encroachments.

Writing about Dr. Boatwright, Woodford B. Hackley, former Director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, indicates "more than anything else, Boatwright was a builder - a builder of character and a builder of the University of Richmond."

Univerisity of Richmond Educator and University President; Professor of modern languages at Richmond College from 1890 to 1895; He became President of Richmond College in 1895, at age 26, and served until 1946, a total of 51 years; He served as Chancellor of the school, which had become the University of Richmond in 1920, from 1946 until his death in 1951; The main library of the University of Richmond was dedicated as the Boatwright Memorial Library in 1955.

The University of Richmond traces its roots to 1830 at a private academy called Dunlora, which was operated by the Reverend Edward Baptist under the sponsorship of the Virginia Baptist Education Society. In 1832, the Virginia Baptist Seminary was formed with the Reverend Robert Ryland as principal and the only teacher. The seminary was located on a farm called Spring Farm near the present day Bryan Park. In 1834, the seminary was moved to what was then a western suburb of Richmond, one-half mile from the city limits. The seminary, located near the present intersection of Grace and Lombardy Streets, and the school remained at this site for eighty years. In 1840, Richmond College was chartered as a liberal arts and sciences college for men by the Virginia General Assembly.

Two other events provided significant impact in shaping the existing physical campus: the move to the present site and the establishment of the co-ordinate system. The origins of the present campus date to 1910, when the Richmond College Board of Trustees purchased approximately 290 acres including Westhampton Lake. Ben Green’s old mill pond, now known as Westhampton Lake, stretched 1,326 feet in length and divided the property into two parts. The lake covered approximately fourteen acres and predated the Civil War. Classes at Richmond College began in September, 1914. Westhampton College, a college of liberal arts and sciences for women, was also established in 1914 on the same property. George White McDaniel, chairman of the Board of Trustees committee to secure the deed to the property, noted that the property was “sufficiently large for all future purposes” of the institution. The property was outside the City of Richmond in Henrico County. Twenty-six years later Richmond College was once again within the city limits as the City of Richmond annexed a considerable portion of Henrico County.

Univerisity of Richmond President Frederic William Boatwright (1895-1946 term of office) envisioned a “Collegiate Gothic” style of architecture for the new University campus. In 1910, the architectural firm of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson was commissioned by the Board of Trustees to draft plans for the future College. Ralph Adams Cram, eminent institutional architect, was responsible for establishing the enduring style on the University of Richmond campus. The Board of Trustees also engaged the service of a landscape architect Warren H. Manning, a former apprentice to Frederick Law Olmstead. Manning was responsible for designing and locating roads, supervising the cutting and planting of trees, locating walkways, and landscaping the terrain so that it would drain appropriately. President Boatwright worked with Cram and Manning to formulate a master plan which considered fifty years of growth for the institution on its present site. The master plan included provision for a college of medicine, a law school building, an observatory, a school of business administration, an engineering school, a gymnasium and swimming pool, a major library and homes for professors.

Construction of new buildings designed by Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson began in 1911. The first building constructed on the new site was Ryland Hall, which housed administrative offices, lecture rooms, the art hall, meeting space and a library with 40,000 volumes. It was followed by North Court. Two residence halls for men were also constructed: Thomas Hall and Jeter Hall. Cram is credited with remarking that the collegiate Gothic style symbolizes “eternal values” and “exalted ideals of education and religion.” Cram also boasted that there “wasn’t another site in the whole United States as suitable for a college, except for the site at West Point.”

During World War II, the University of Richmond supported the national effort to conserve food by establishing victory gardens on campus. In the spring of 1943, an area on the Westhampton campus near River Road was cultivated with plots assigned to faculty who wished to make a garden. The University of Richmond expanded over time as the following schools of study were established:

1870 The T.C. Williams School of Law
1921 The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
1949 The E. Claiborne Robins School of Business
1962 University College (The School of Continuing Studies)
1976 The Richard S. Reynolds Graduate School of Business
1992 The Jepson School of Leadership Studies
Perhaps, the most significant event in the recent history of the University occurred in 1969, when alumnus E. Claiborne Robins gave the University a gift valued at $50 million. The University moved forward to raise a matching amount of funds. This led to the construction of new facilities and the renovation of existing campus buildings.

Univerisity of Richmond Over the years, the University of Richmond has been characterized by its rolling terrain, commodious open space and lush tree canopy. This landscape was the primary determinant in the initial master plan organization and has continued to dictate the development patterns as growth has occurred. This methodology has been continuously embraced by those in leadership positions within the University and has clearly elevated theUniversity of Richmond to a top position nationally in the aesthetic quality of its setting. In 1999, the University of Richmond was recognized by the Princeton Review as the most beautiful campus in the United States.

The architecture itself, through strict adherence to the original vision, continues to differentiate and elevate the campus above even those universities that profess to have the finest master plans and architecture.

Univerisity of Richmond

For more than eighty years there has been a remarkable fidelity to the vision held by past generations of trustees.

That constancy has resulted in the extraordinary physical and academic environment that now exists on the university grounds. One fundamental objective of this planning process has been to preserve the fruits of that constancy of vision, while accomodating the facilities needed to fulfill the academic mission.

The Frederic W. Boatwright Society was founded in 1972 as a tribute to Dr. Frederic W. Boatwright, who served as president of the University of Richmond from 1895-1946. With remarkable foresight and dynamic leadership during his fifty-one years as President, Dr. Boatwright charted firm directions for the superb, modern University that we know today. His vision and direction led, in 1914, to the relocation of the campus to its current location. At the society's annual meeting each spring, members of the class who are celebrating their 50th year since graduation are received as members of the society. Friendship, leadership, service, and continuing personal support characterize the atmosphere and the activities of this society.

Frederic William Boatwright Gravestone

On June 2, 1945, Dr. Boatwright completed 50 years of continuous service as President of the University of Richmond. About 500 persons assembled to pay a tribute to him at his Golden Anniversary Dinner. Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman, who was Rector of the Board of Trustees, acted as Toastmaster. The Honorable Colgate W. Darden, Governor of Virginia, made a speech and paid tribute to Dr. Boatwright and expressed warm appreciation of the important service which the University of Richmond rendered to the State and Nation. Greetings from the Association of American Colleges was brought by its Executive Secretary Dr. Guy E. Snavely. Dr. Boatwright was a charter member of the association. The Honorable Horace H. Edwards, City attorney, speaking as a representative for the City Mayor, brought congratulations from the City of Richmond. Rev. Clyde N. Parker represented the Baptist General Association of Virginia and brought greetings from 300,000 members of the 1,200 Baptist Churches of Virginia. These were followed by three addresses made by Justice Edward W. Hudgins, of the Supreme Court of Virginia, who spoke on the theme: "Boatwright, the Citizen", by Mrs. May Thompson Evans, representing the Westhampton Alumnae Association, whose theme was: "Boatwright, the Educator", and by Dr. Thomas Branch McAdams, president of the Union Trust Company of Maryland; who gave an appraisal of "Boatwright, the Administrator".

It’s all relative for University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium

By John O'Connor
Published: January 26, 2010

More than a century later, Dr. Boatwright's vision is becoming reality, with the help of a descendent.

The University of Richmond in September will open Robins Stadium, a $25 million on-campus football facility being built by Hourigan Construction. The senior superintendent of the project is Bob Boatwright, whose family tree includes the man who was Richmond's esteemed president 1895-1946.

Robins Stadium, with a seating capacity of 8,700, is on Boatwright Drive, and UR's library also is named after Boatwright, evidence of Frederic W. Boatwright's impact on the school. Richmond College relocated from downtown to its current location in 1914. Boatwright guided the move and recommended the "Collegiate Gothic" architectural style.

"He built a university, and not many men can say that," said Fletcher Stiers, a Richmond graduate (Class of 1948) who has researched Boatwright and lectured on his tenure at the school. Boatwright, who graduated from Richmond College in 1888, became president at 27. At that time, Richmond College had nine professors and 183 students.

"He saw the development of the school from that to a university," Stiers said. "He raised the funds and made a lot of wise decisions."

Now, Bob Boatwright, is responsible for construction operations at Robins Stadium, in coordination with university architects and engineers.

"I kind of like the Boatwright name staying connected to the university," Boatwright said. "I wasn't aware, to tell you the truth, that Dr. Frederic Boatwright was [related] until we got to looking into building the stadium. When we researched the bloodline, I was very much surprised that he was kin to me.

"In fact, I talked to my 92-year-old aunt first about it. She told me 'Absolutely, we're kin to the educators.' It was a pleasant surprise."

Bob Boatwright did not at tend college, but his daughter and son-in-law graduated from UR. Boatwright considers himself a Spiders fan. His connections to the school were not factors in the selection of Hourigan Construction as builder of Robins Stadium, according to Mark Hourigan, the company's president and owner.

"Bob helped us get the job, but not because he is a Boatwright," said Hourigan. "Bob is a phenomenal superintendent, without a doubt, one of the preeminent superintendents in the state."

The Spiders have played home football games off-campus since 1929. The move from on-campus football games to city facilities was made to accommodate larger crowds and reluctantly approved by Dr. Frederic W. Boatwright.

"The movement, now becoming so general, to build city stadiums is all right for local sports organizations and for professional teams, but it is wholly bad for the colleges," the former school president said in response to a Richmond newspaper survey in the 1920s.

Frederic W. Boatwright lived at 1 Bostwick Lane on campus. That house became the home of UR Athletic Director Chuck Boone and Jim Miller, Boone's successor in 2000. UR's decision to pursue the expansion of the field adjacent to the Robins Center for the purpose of converting it into a football facility (and for other sports) was made in 2003.

Miller said the snow and rain this winter have slowed construction, but he remains confident that the stadium will be completed this summer.

"A stadium is a different animal compared to an office building, or anything with four sides and a roof," Bob Boatwright said. "With a stadium being open, it makes it a little more challenging with the weather.

"But we are ahead of schedule and planning on staying ahead of schedule."

From "Boatright Family Notes & Documents", R. G. Boatright, Sec. III, p. 1:
Letter written by John B. Boatwright, Buckingham, VA (1928)....

My grandfather, Reuben Boatwright, settled in Buckingham Co., VA around 1788. His son, John, married and went to Danville, Va....One or more of his sons live there now. Several other sons of my grandfather, Reuben, lived here; one of them being my father, Reuben Baker Boatwright, born January 23, 1831. He was a Baptist minister, and lived in other states at various times. He died here at age 83. He, my father, had two sons, my brother, Frederick W. Boatwright, now President of the University of Richmond, and myself.

John graduated from the University of Richmond and then attended the T. C. Williams Law School of the University of Richmond. He received his law degree in 1908. From law school he was employed as a lawyer in the United States State Department. From the State Department he returned to Buckingham County to actively practice law. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates for 29 years, representing Buckingham, Cumberland and Appomattox Counties. He served as Chairman of the powerful House Committee on General Laws for many years. He also held many other important committee assignments. He chose not to seek reelection in 1959, but continued to practice law in Buckingham County. John was not the only community worker in the family. Grace and John served on the Selective Service Board during World War I. Grace was Clerk of the Buckingham County School Board for many years.

Cole-Boatwright

The ancestral home of the Boatwrights, "Social Hall," Va., was the scene of a beautiful wedding at noon today, when Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Boatwright gave in marriage their daughter, Pattie Taylor, to Alfonzo Howard Cole, of Chilhowie, Va.

The entire lower floor was canvased in white and handsomely decorated with ferns, pink and white chrysanthemums and innumberable candeliabra with pink shades.

In the parlor an improvised altar was erected, before which the ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. W. Bagwell, the pastor of the bride, assisted by Dr. Kincannon, of Mississippi, a cousin of the groom.

Just before the bridal party entered to the strains of Lohengrin's Wedding March, rendered by Miss Marie Payne, of Columbia, Miss Helen Knox Spain, of New York, sang the bridal chorus.

First came H. L. Boatwright and R. B. Huggins, followed by Miss Mary Catlin, who entered alone, charmingly gowned in white net over pink taffeta, carrying an armful of pink chrysanthemums. Next came W. P. Boatwright and Wistar Anderson.

Virginia Seal of Richmond, who bore the wedding ring in a calla iliy, was very daintuly dressed in French mull and valenciennes lace, with pink sash and slippers.

The bride entered with her sister, Miss Alice Virginia Boatwright, and was met at the alter by the bridegroom and his best man, Dr. J. M. Lewis, of Arvonia. The maid of honor was prettily gowned in a white lace robe over white taffeta and carried an armful of white chrysanthemums.

The bride wore a handsome going-away gown of brown broad cloth with hat and gloves to match, and carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses.

After the rehersal on Monday night a handsome reception was tendered the bridal party at "Social Hall."

Mr. and Mrs. Cole left immediately after the ceremony for an extended tour through the North, and will be at home after Dec. 15.

The guests from a distance were Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Mabry, of Newport News; Mrs. N. E. Seal and her daughter, little Miss Martha Virginia Seal, of Richmond; Miss Mary Catlin, of Richmond; Miss Helen Knox Spain, of New York; Miss Marie Payne, of Columbia; Dr. Kincanon, of Mississippi; Dr. R. L. Hudgins, of Farmville and Mr. Barnes, of Richmond.
